Grant goes to hi-tech companyA Sunshine West company has been awarded a $77,625 new-technology grant from the state government. Most teenagers spend their high school years trying to fit in. Thats not the case for Deer Parks Tahlya Cutaja, whos comfortable that her leadership skills stand out.

The 14-year-old was nominated by her school co-ordinator at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook to take part in this years Whitten Project for young leaders.

The project provided 32 year 9 and 10 students with a range of life and sport experiences to build their leadership skills.

It was a really rewarding experience, Tahlya says. We spent about six months together, getting to know each other and learning about what it really means to be a leader.

Tahlya says the main thing she learned is that leadership is as much about others as yourself.

I also learnt you should never give up, she says. If you want to do something, stick to it. Be that person who has the initiative to find a different way.

Ive tried to be a good leader in my work as college ambassador and Im hoping I can help out in next years Whitten Project.

The young leaders celebrated their graduation at Whitten Oval on October 27 .

The ceremony was hosted by graduating leaders Jes Evans and Scott Peacock-Pereira, and featured guest presentations by Melbourne Vixens captain Bianca Chatfield and Western Bulldogs board member Kylie Watson-Wheeler.

Sunshine Town Centre is set to become more accessible and connected for pedestrians, thanks to a $90,000 signage project approved at last weeks Brimbank council meeting.

The signs are set to be created early next year.

They will direct cyclists and walkers to key facilities in the area such as Sunshine railway station, bus stops, shops, parks, the library, VicRoads and carparks.

The project will also direct path users to historic landmarks and detours.

Brimbank council administrator John Tanner told the October 28 meeting it was extremely important residents were able to use the right signage and infrastructure.

More and more people are utilising these pathways, he said.

The project will also integrate quick response codes that will provide the capacity to translate sign information for tourists and point, online, to walking trails such as the Sunshine Historical Walk and information about seasonal events.

Brimbank corporate and community relations manager Helen Morrissey said it was an exciting time for Sunshine.

We know in marketing that the ability to physically approach and understand a product enhances its appeal, so it will help with that, she said. People will have an easier time accessing shops and facilities.

The project comes as new growth estimates by the Metropolitan Planning Authority reveal Sunshine could have 28,000 new jobs, 30,000 new homes and 58,000 new residents coming to the area by 2031.

Sunshine was earmarked as an Emerging National Employment Cluster in Plan Melbourne last year.

The plan posits the area as the key growth centre in Melbournes west and aims to encourage government and private-sector investment in the former industrial heartland.

Brimbank chairman John Watson said the project built on more than $1 billion in private and public investment in the past five years.

With quality services and infrastructure, strong transport connections, excellent urban and public spaces and land ready for development [Sunshine] has unrivalled potential for investors, he said.

Mr Watson said Sunshine being announced as a major link in the Airport Rail Project would be a catalyst for further development that would bringing more people and businesses to the town centre.

Lovers of the Italian language will delight in an original performance called La Lettera by Taylors Lake Secondary College next week.

La Lettera meaning the letter in Italian tells the story of a love so strong that war, social class and distance cant tear the lovers apart.

Seven year 7 students, who are studying Italian at school, will stage the 40-minute play, which was written and directed by their Italian teacher, Livia Fasulo. Its a great way to showcase their talent in a second language and enable the community to be involved in

the colleges extra-curricular programs, Ms Fasulo said. Im proud of my students for being courageous and performing in Italian. They bring the performance and language to life.

The play is written in Italian, with an English introduction to assist non-Italian audience members with the storyline.

La Lettera will be staged on Monday, November 10, at 7pm, in the SPACE area of Taylors Lake Secondary College. Admission is $3.

St Albans Main Road level crossing is a step closer to being removed as a $200 million project tender to lower the rail line and build a new premium station under the road progressed to a shortlist of bidders.

The state government last week announced that Acciona Infrastructure Australia with Coleman Rail, and Leighton Contractors, had been shortlisted to remove the Main Road level crossing in St Albans and Blackburn Road level crossing in Blackburn. The state government has also shortlisted bidders for another two level crossings at Burke Road in Glen Iris and North Road in Ormond in a separate package.

Roads and Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said packaging four priority level crossing removals into two separate contracts was the most efficient way to get the works done.

Asip Demiri, of the St Albans Traders Association, who has been campaigning for the level crossings removal for nearly two decades, welcomed the news but questioned when construction would actually begin. He was also concerned that he hadnt seen plans for the project.

Its about time. Were talking about life and death matters here, Mr Demiri said. They said theyre going to start works before the new year. Short-listing [bidders] is a bit short of having started.

Is the government going to keep its word? To me, Im not sure.
