Asbestos Concerns in Sunshine NorthThe Victorian Government is responding to community concerns relating to asbestos in

    Sunshine North.

They relate both to the past asbestos production at the Wunderlich factory in McIntyre

Road, Sunshine North, which closed in 1982 and the current reports of asbestos materials

    found in the area.

The Victorian Government is working closely with Brimbank City Council to keep the

community informed of the steps being taken to investigate and respond to these concerns.

The Department of Health advises residents in and around Sunshine North not to go into

their roof spaces without expert advice to avoid any possible exposure to asbestos and

other hazards. For more information go to www.brimbank.vic.gov.au

Big residential blocks in St Albans are being carved up for multiple units, and some residents are not impressed.

Fox Street residents Lazar Nikolov and Bernie Power are concerned at recent planning applications that subdivide blocks along their street to fit in as many units as possible.

So far, two planning applications to subdivide blocks on Fox Street have been lodged with Brimbank council. One proposes four double-storey and two single-storey units on one vacant block, while the other is for three double-storey units at the back of an existing property.

Developers for the first application are taking Brimbank council to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after the council refused a planning permit earlier this month.

The second planning application, which had generated 14 objections by last Friday, is still in the public notification phase and a decision has yet to be made.

Fox Street is just one example of where suburban blocks are being subdivided by developers.

Mr Power and Mr Nikolov anticipate many more such applications as the predominantly elderly population passes away or sells to downsize. The pair believe their street will turn into a carpark if all proposed unit developments, which usually allow one off-street parking space, are approved. They are also concerned about privacy and where all the bins will go for the weekly rubbish collection.

All the blocks are either 900 or 950 square metres its going to become a ghetto, Mr Nikolov said. Developers are maximising their projects for personal gain. The whole street will be overcrowded.

    Ghetto fears in carve-up

Bernie Power and Lazar Nikolov oppose subdivision and building density in Fox Street. (Wayne Hawkins)

A Sunshine North resident has set up a website in the wake of investigations linking the former Wunderlich factory to more than 20 asbestos exposure cases.

Deby Sammut, who has lived on Barwon Avenue with her husband and two sons since 1980, set up the We Want Action website last week so that fellow Sunshine North residents could tell their stories, ask questions and form a community group to start getting answers. I want all the houses cleaned of the asbestos, I want soil testing and I want to know whats going to be done if asbestos is in the soil, Ms Sammut said.

A lot of people are going through quite a bit of hardship over this.

So far, 16 people who lived within a kilometre of the former Wunderlich factory on McIntyre Road have died from asbestos-related diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma, while a further eight people are seriously ill.

Slater and Gordon senior asbestos lawyer Margaret Kent said dozens of calls had come in from Sunshine North residents concerned they, too, had been affected. Meanwhile, the Environment Protection Authority is removing illegally dumped waste containing asbestos along the Gilmour Road rail reserve, which is behind the former Wunderlich site.

A community meeting will be held this Thursday, 4-7pm, at Victoria University Convention Centre. The We Want Action website is www.debys.com.au/action.

Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre will hold a training clinic next month for community workers and lawyers dealing with tenancy complaints.

Too often, tenants come off second- best in disputes with landlords and agents, even though in many cases the law is on their side, Community West manager Simon Roberts said.

Better knowledge and referral path- ways can help even up the contest.

Youll know what to do when that client has a rental housing issue and be empowered to directly help them achieve a positive outcome.

The training clinic will be at Sunshine Visy Hub from 9.30am-4.30pm on November 11, covering the basics of housing and rental law, navigating legalese, legal responsibilities of tenants and landlords, and finding the right referral pathways. It will also cover compliance, compensation, rent increases and eviction.

Tenants Union policy officer James Bennett said repairs and dodgy bond claims were the most common issues Brimbank tenants face.

Unfortunately, we get a lot of questions from people who have been hit by untrue bond claims, or situations where the landlord or agent takes far too long to give their bond back.

Register by November 4 by phoning 8312 2010 or email [email protected].

Pedicabs could soon be a permanent feature of Melbourne roads if a new Keilor Park company has its way.

Green Monkey is the brainchild of Epping-based Luqman Nazzal and husband and wife team Warren and Judy Gatt, who are keen to see their fleet of 20 environmentally-friendly pedicabs embraced by tourists and locals. The trio started the company in November last year and put out its first fleet of

Pedi-cure to pollutionGreen Monkey pedicabs on Sydney Road. (Supplied)

pedicabs on Moreland roads, including Sydney Road in Brunswick, earlier this month.

The company is also in talks with Melbourne City Council to introduce 10 pedicabs to the CBD.

Pedicabs, or rickshaws, have long been a popular mode of transport in many Asian countries and increasingly in Europe.

We thought there was an opportunity to introduce a new, fun kind of business, Mr Nazzal said. We believe that Melbourne needs a bit of spark we thought pedicabs would

add to its culture and people would appreciate them, Mrs Gatt said.

Its a fantastic way to show tourists the different landmarks.

Its not a taxi service, its a short-trip experience and its really aimed at tourists. But its also a way for locals to get from A to B, she said. The response were getting is very positive.

Mrs Gatt said there were plans to expand into more inner-city areas and bayside suburbs, and to operate at festivals and other events.

A long-time St Albans barber who cut hair in his backyard shed for 55 years was farewelled last week.

Aldo Marsani died at home on October 11 after suffering from pneumonia. He was aged 94.

The Italian-born came to Australia in 1952 after serving as a sailor during WWII and being shuffled around several refugee camps as changes were made to borders in post-war central Europe.

Mr Marsani spent two years in Gippsland working on the Thomson River dam project, where he also cut the hair of fellow workers a skill he had honed since the age of 13.

Coming to the city, he bought a block of land on McIvor Road at St Albans.

It was here he set up the family home and a barbers salon in the back shed.

Out the front, his first car, a Fiat 1100, still takes pride of place.

Son Fabrizio said Mr Marsani wasnt exactly an enterprising man he didnt advertise his services and never chased new business.

Nevertheless, men would line up to have their locks shorn off.

Many of his customers were also post-war migrants and liked nothing more than discussing the changes happening in Europe as they waited to have their haircuts.

Mr Marsani had a very loyal clientele, with some people going to him for 40 or 50 years.

But everyone knew not to disturb him on a Sunday afternoon.

My fondest memory of my dad is him sitting back on a Sunday afternoon listening to his opera records or his Italian folk records, Fabrizio said.

    Aldos final cut, a tribute

That was his relax time. Heaven behold if someone tried to come

over and get a haircut on a Sunday afternoon, after hed had lunch.

Mr Marsani was still cutting hair until he was 87, when a broken shoulder brought on his early retirement.

He was also involved in ANCRI, the Italian equivalent of the RSL, for more than 30 years.

Mr Marsani was farewelled last week during a funeral service in St Albans and was buried at Keilor Cemetery. He leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Amerina, and sons Fabrizio, Claude and Rudolph.

    A Proud Community Growing Together

Melton City Council Community NewsMOVING AHEAD

Now that daylight savings has returned and the warmer spring weather is upon us, Ive enjoyed getting out and catching up with everything thats been going on in our community. One thing

thats really impressed me is the number of new houses popping up around Diggers Rest. Its delightful to see so many new homes and recreational areas being constructed and I would like to welcome all the new residents to our community. I also encourage existing residents to help our new neighbours feel welcome and maybe make some new friends along the way.

Its also wonderful to see that Council is currently developing plans for two, new recreation and play spaces in Hillside, at the Boronia Drive and Kenswick Drive Reserves. Both will feature new tree plantings, pathways and playgrounds and will be welcome additions to our growing community.

I recently put up a motion to Council to establish homework groups at the Caroline Springs and Melton libraries. As a teacher and Councillor, a lot of parents approach me for ideas on how their children can get help, encouragement and support while doing their homework. The new groups I have proposed come in response to community feedback a strong indicator of how both Council and I, personally, listen to our residents and respond to their needs.

If you have for any ideas or issues for Watts Ward please contact me on 0438 057 807 or [email protected]

As my term as Mayor draws to some of the personal highlights of the past twelve months.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet some

truly wonderful people in my journey as Mayor. Ive taken part in many vibrant celebrations with some of our emerging cultural fauna from the environmental groups that work so tirelessly for our municipality.

Ive visited schools, been involved with community groups and sporting clubs and have enjoyed the opportunity to hear more about the great work being done in our community.

Being Mayor has been a great learning experience for me; one I will look back on with great affection and honour for many years to come.

As Mayor, Ive been afforded many opportunities to advocate on behalf of our community to all levels of government. In particular, improved transport options for residents, including the frequency and duplication of our train service as well as the duplication of the Melton Highway, the need for additional schools and improvements to our health services. I am also really pleased that we have developed a strategic framework to outline our advocacy efforts. Advocating for our community is something Ive truly embraced in the last year and will continue to do for the remainder of my term.

In closing, Id like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me in the past twelve months. Your encouragement has meant the world to me and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to serve this wonderful community.

I am sure the next twelve months will be equally as prosperous for the City of Melton, and look forward to working with the members of the community to secure an even brighter future for our great municipality.

I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at [email protected]

ThreeSixty Trampoline Park at Caroline Springs has launched the vintage sport of young people in the 1950s and 60s into a whole new dimension.

Maybe this explains why father Branson Lims passion to build a great business based on sport and fun has inspired his three sons, Timothy, Alex and Michael, to join the action.

As the website says: ThreeSixty lets you fly high and land soft its a place where you defy the laws of gravity, soar high and let yourself go.

Venue manager Timothy Lim says the family-run and community-orientated centre is the first of its kind in Melbournes outer west, and is proving a massive hit.

Being a sporting family ourselves, we have created a safe environment where the children can bounce, jump and hop around to their hearts content, Timothy says.

Our friendly and highly-trained Team ThreeSixty members are never too far away to help you or show you a few tricks.

All team members, including a sponsored skateboarder and dance teacher, have a passion for sports and working with children.

The centre has a free-jump section, including 36 interconnected trampolines, where youngsters can bounce about safely and under supervision. There are also basketball rings above trampolines so anyone can get that slam dunk in.

Get bounce back into your dayA mini-jump session allows adults to

bounce with younger children aged from three to five years old. For the more proficient, theres a wall runner, where bravehearts can rebound off the trampolines to run up the wall.

I especially love working with children with disabilities, Timothy says. I spent two summers working as a counsellor for children with special needs in America.

Timothy says the team at ThreeSixty is happy to teach anyone how to do tricks and moves on any of the high-performance, gymnastic-grade trampolines, subject to a minimum height requirement for users.

One-hour trampoline sessions are available on the hour, during which time

guests can use any feature at the venue. Guests are encouraged to book and pay online to ensure they dont miss out on their desired day and time.

The centre also hosts dodgeball tournaments, which are a knockout style game, on Thursday nights from 7pm.

It is also an ideal place for kids birthday parties and for fundraising events for groups and clubs.

Mike started All Metal Recyclers less than two years ago but has 20 years experience in the metal recycling industry.

He has held senior positions with the worlds largest metal recyclers in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria and is president of the Australian Metal Recycling Industry Association.

Mikes experience is coupled with that of fellow employees Tony and Mark, metal

buyers and customer service maestros who have also each worked in the industry for more than 20 years.

We are cash buyers, paying on-the-spot, and recyclers of all ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals from tradies, manufacturers, industries and the general public, Mike says.

One of the reasons All Metal Recyclers stands out from its competitors is its drive-through service.

Our drive-through, undercover, scrap metal drop-off makes life easier for customers because its fast and keeps them out of the weather, Mike says.

Trading directly with local and international customers and smelters enables All Metal Recyclers to offer competitive prices.

We provide good, old-fashioned customer service and want to make our suppliers feel welcome, regardless of the volume they supply. The company complies with the Scrap

Metal Industry Code of Compliance and buys scrap aluminium, cans, brass and bronze, copper, lead, electrical wiring, stainless-steel and wheels.

We [are]obliged to operate in a safe working environment but we believe in it for our customers and staff, and therefore uphold the highest occupational health and safety at all times,Mike says.

This distinctive residence, in the heart of Keilor Village and within easy reach of public and private schools, has a pleasing feel of seclusion yet is in the very thick of things. Three of the bedrooms are off the living room at the back, as is the main bathroom and laundry. The main bedroom is near the front door and has subtle wallpaper, elegant window coverings, space for retreat, a walk-in robe and en suite. The lounge room across the way (a slate-tiled entry hall) has a brick fireplace (fully functional), and next door theres a dining room which links with the kitchen. Next to a large family room with polished floorboards, the kitchen has a timber cupboards, an island bench and dishwasher. Small decks, with leafy outlooks, are accessed from the lounge room and kitchen and, out back, theres a fenced in-ground pool encircled by Castlemaine slate and greenery. Summer is looking good for the lucky family that scores this property which also has a double garage.

If the front gardens at this property put on a pretty display, the ones out back are even better, making the block of about 945 square metres one of the best when it comes to outdoor attraction. Its just as nice inside where there are five bedrooms, the main with full en suite. One of the back bedrooms also has an en suite; others are served by the main bathroom. The tiled family-meals zone and rumpus room around the kitchen have gorgeous garden views, as does a lounge-dining room near entry which has a cast-iron fireplace within a period-style surround. The kitchen has timber cupboards galore, servery bench, breakfast bar, pantry cupboards, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. A timber pergola clad in wisteria sits in those lovely gardens which are a mix of brick-edged cottage gardens and formal hedging, with brick-paved walkways a perfect match for the ambience. New floor coverings, ducted cooling and a lock-up double garage are also of note.

With arguably one of the best outdoor entertainment zones to be found in the area, this beautifully styled house benefits from strict attention to detail and designer finishes. Polished jarrah floorboards, soft-grey wall colour and charcoal tones accentuate the space and class on display throughout. Of the three fitted bedrooms, the main has a smart en suite and the main bathroom has a spa. The large living hub includes a sparkling kitchen with white cabinetry topped with granite (also forming the splashback), wall oven, 900mm gas cooktop and canopy rangehood. But the star role goes to the amazing covered deck which looks out to a sheltered built-in barbecue flanked by a pair of wonderfully ambient water features. And theres a second covered deck at the back for a change of mood. Ducted heating, split-system, alarm and security surveillance, water tank, garden shed, side driveway through high gates and a remote-controlled double garage are included.

Built at a time when houses were made to withstand the rigours of time, this attractive brick veneer fronted by pretty gardens, has good bones on which to operate. So if a challenging renovation is one to relish, this house could be a winner for a savvy buyer on auction day. On a big block of about 697 square metres, the house has three bedrooms, two with built-in robes. They are served by a fully tiled bathroom which has a timber-lined ceiling; there are two toilets. Timber and/or timber laminate play a big part in the interior with both kitchen and large, tiled rumpus room lined with it on walls and ceilings. Next to a family/meals section, the kitchen has an island bench, ample cupboards (timber) and a gas upright cooker; another gas cooker sits in the laundry. The backyard is almost entirely paved in concrete, with trees along the back fence. An opportunity to secure a property in a suburb thats in hot demand has come up and this stylishly updated house is a little beauty.

Its simple brick veneer facade is complemented by shrubs and green lawn laid out as a welcome mat.

Polished timber floorboards with timber skirts flow through the entire house and add warmth to the mostly white palette, while moulded cornices and archways enhance character.

All three bedrooms are towards the front of the house (right of entry) and have built-in wardrobes with floor-to-ceiling mirrors reflecting plenty of natural light which floods through large windows.

The spacious north-facing family room to the left of entry gets plenty of sun in the warmer months with an air-conditioner to cool down if it gets too hot. And theres a gas heater set in a brick surround when the seasons change.

The adjoining meals area flows into the updated polished timber kitchen which has marble benchtops and stainless-steel appliances including a wall oven, gas cooktop and rangehood. The main bathroom and separate laundry are towards the rear.

Inviting the whole family round for a barbecue wont be a drama any longer thanks to an expansive sheltered entertainment area out the back. A large remote-controlled carport provides plenty
