    NAIDOC Week is currently underway; providing an opportunity for Council to formally recognise and celebrate the culture, history and achievements of our Indigenous people.Brimbank City Council has a strong commitment to encouraging a supportive, inclusive and respectful environment for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Last year Council launched its Reconciliation Action Plan 2013-2017 which demonstrates Councils commitment to reconciliation for

    the municipalitys Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents.The National theme for NAIDOC Week this year is Serving Country: Centenary and Beyond. This was chosen to coincide with The Spirit Lives On: 2014-18, a national commemorative program recognising 100 years since Australias involvement in the First World War.In other news, the design works for the redevelopment of the Errington Community

    Centre, which includes a new performing art space, thanks to a generous donation from the St Albans Community Centre Co-operative Ltd, are progressing well (as pictured below). The redevelopment of the Errington Community Centre is a key project of Stage One of the Errington Precinct Master Plan and is expected to be completed in May 2016.

    Get involved Pathways for Young Asylum Seekers The Employment Pathways for Young Asylum Seekers (EPYAS) program is providing workshops and support for young asylum seekers aged 18-30 years living in the City of Brimbank. The program has been developed by Brotherhood of St Laurence and Brimbank City Council in response to the needs of young asylum seekers who do not have access to government job programs.Council in conjunction with the Brotherhood of St Laurence is off ering four employment skills workshops as part of this program. The two-day workshops will include resume writing tips and employment pathway planning. The fi rst two day workshops will take place on Wednesday and Thursday 30 and 31 July from 12.30 to 4.30pm at Visy Cares Hub, 80B Harvester Road, Sunshine. Three other workshops will take place in September and October 2014. The program is at no charge.     Ideas wanted for performing art spaces Council is creating a performing arts space for approximately 200 seats in St Albans, as part of the Errington Community Centre redevelopment.Come along to a community meeting to fi nd out more about the venue and tell us how you might like to use it, or how you would like to see it used.     Update: St Albans pool temporary closureEssential maintenance works to the roof of St Albans Leisure Centres indoor pool facilities are continuing. Brimbank police are joining with Lakeside Hyundai in Caroline Springs to host a Women in Motion session at which mechanics will show women how to perform basic car maintenance. The July 24 workshop will include changing tyres, checking oil and water levels, and jump-starting, as well as issues around vehicle crime and road laws. Leading Senior Constable Matthew Mudie said the workshop was aimed at women from multicultural communities, giving them more confidence on the road.     The first sod was turned last week on a 3.3-kilometre extension of Airport Drive that lays the groundwork for a second road and rail entrance to the airport.

    Roads Minister Terry Mulder and Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff donned hard hats and safety vests as earthworks got under way on the $100 million first stage.

    The new entrance will come off the Western Ring Road and extend Airport Drive from Sharps Road to Mercer Drive via a new four-lane divided road (two lanes in each direction), which will have capacity to expand to six lanes in future. A shared pedestrian and bike path will be constructed alongside the expanded Airport Drive.

    Mr Mulder said the road project complemented the state governments plans to build a Melbourne Airport rail link and, in conjunction with Transurban, widen the CityLink-Tullamarine Freeway interchange.

    Earlier this year, the Napthine government announced an $850 million upgrade and widening of both CityLink and a section of the Tullamarine Freeway to boost their capacity by 30 per cent, Mr Mulder said.

    An airport rail link would service a massive growth in the number of passengers travelling to and from the airport.

    The Airport Drive extension will relieve some of the congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway and reduce the amount of airport traffic using Melrose Drive, Mr Mulder added.

    Woodruff said the extended Airport Drive was scheduled to open next year, prior to the airports new domestic terminal and ensuring passengers had more direct access to the new Terminal 4 and its planned transport hub.

    We hope funding is also soon committed to extend the rest of the Tullamarine Freeway through to Melbourne Airport, Mr Woodruff said. The new Airport Drive is also where the airport rail link will enter the airport, with room for the rail link in the centre of the extended four-lane road.

    We are one of the only airports in the world with 30 million annual passengers, and no rail link.

    We look forward to working with the state government to progress this project and deliver an alternative mode of transport to and from Melbourne Airport.

    Mr Woodruff said the Airport Drive extension would also improve access to the airports growing business park.

    As Australias largest air freight export hub, access to this key area will continue to support our tenants, including five of the worlds top 10 logistics companies, he said.

    It will also help the state government achieve its vision for Victoria to become Asias food bowl.

    Police are urging motorists to look, lock, leave before stepping away from their vehicles following a recent spike in thefts.

    High and rising rates of theft from motor vehicles across Brimbank and Melton are a top concern for police, says crime prevention officer Leading Senior Constable Matt Mudie.

    Leading Senior Constable Mudie said it was easy for motorists to prevent falling victim to the crime by simply locking up.

    He warned motorists not to get complacent especially around the home and when leaving cars in the driveway.

    Cars were also targeted at school drop-off sites and at petrol stations. Often its opportunistic theft that happens very quickly, he said. Always lock your car when youre not with your vehicle.

    Part of the look, lock, leave campaign is reminding motorists to not only lock up but also look into their cars to ensure no valuables are left behind, or visible.

    People are still leaving GPS [units] on their consoles and forgetting their wallets and purses, Leading Senior Constable Mudie said.

    Police recently teamed up with the Melton CFA to help spread the message at railway stations another hotspot for theft. The CFAS variable sign boards were used to display crime prevention messages to remind people to lock up, resulting in a significant reduction of thefts for that period.

    Dont make car theft easy

    At age 12, Justin Gardner was using and selling drugs. By 14 he was homeless and roaming the streets of Sunshine.

    The only thing keeping me alive was the lust to kill one person in particular, Mr Gardner says of this dark period in his life.

    It wasnt until he was 23 that Mr Gardner decided to make something of himself. He decided to devote his life to Christianity. Eighteen years later hes a successful author and senior pastor of his own church, the Destiny Centre, in Hoppers Crossing.

    Im alive because I had a fear of needles, so I never started taking the drugs that killed a lot of my friends, he says. Something changed in me; I started connecting with people.

    When the senior pastor here gave me the keys to the church it was the first time Id ever been trusted by someone.

    While about 200 people attend services held by Mr Gardner every week theyre known for the use of smoke machines and lasers to put the wow factor back into God hes hoping to reach an even wider audience with his next event. He will host the first-ever Pyjama Sunday, a church service where everyone in attendance, including himself, will be required to wear pyjamas.

    This came about because I had a most productive Sunday a couple of weeks ago and I went to bed feeling really thankful, he said.

    Suddenly I couldnt get the image of children in pyjamas in a cancer ward out of my head, and I couldnt sleep because of it.

    Mr Gardner decided to turn his vision into a charity event and is hoping Pyjama Sunday will raise thousands of dollars for the Childhood Cancer Association.

    A Proud Community Growing Together

    Melton City Council Community NewsMOVING AHEAD

    Volunteers really are the lifeblood of our community. Many local groups, sporting clubs and support organisations just couldnt exist if not for the generosity of spirit and can-do attitudes of our local volunteers. Which is why it gave me such pleasure, recently, to attend Councils Share event, where this

    years Annual Community Grants program recipients were announced.

    Council awarded over $167,800 in grant funding to 26 groups to support programs residents in need and get some truly worthwhile initiatives off the ground.

    It was marvellous to see so many people attend the Share event and celebrate the achievements of our grass-roots organisations. We all enjoyed the positive messages relayed by guest speaker, Peter Kenyon, founder and Director of Bank of I.D.E.A.S., who inspired us to look at the glass as half full, rather than half empty.

    Id love to see more residents get involved with local community groups. Its a great way to give something positive back, meet new people and feel a real sense of achievement.

    In the lead up to the November State election, City of Melton residents will have the opportunity to voice their concerns over funding inadequacies for interface Councils, at a community meeting on Monday 14 July. The meeting, hosted by Interface Councils, encourages residents to identify the top three issues faced by people living in the outer suburbs.

    As a Councillor, I encourage residents to have their say and send a clear message to the State Government and the opposition about how important it is that Interface Councils like Melton receive adequate funding for programs and infrastructure.
