About This Data

Below are the names of 350 men from Bristol and the surrounding area who regarded themselves as conscientious objectors in World War 1. These names are extracted from Cyril Pearce’s national database of more than 17000 COs. Our new list includes the 47 names we published last spring.

Many of these 350 were imprisoned from 1916 onwards as conscientious objectors. Others agreed to serve in non-combatant roles like the Friends’ Ambulance Service.

You may recognise a family member among them. If you do we would like to hear from you – we want to find out the background of these men and learn about their experiences during and after the war. The list of names is not comprehensive. If you know of other men who were imprisoned for opposing the war please let us know.

The details are listed alphabetically by surname. Also included are address, occupation and age/date/place of birth where available. You can either scroll through the names or do a search (see below).

If you find someone you are interested in you can find more information about them on the version of the database hosted on the Imperial War Museum website – search for the person by name and then clink on the icon to get more details (you’ll have to create a free login).
