Rebel Norden gathered in the Tiger game-opening kickoff at the McKenzie 20 and raced across midfield. Overtaking Norden, Tiger Dustin Santiago made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Central 19. Rebel Hutchinson gained three yards prior to Norden advanc- ing the ball to the Tiger 10. At the 6:01 mark, Norden’s fumble was scooped up by Tiger Zavian Johnson and returned 89 yards to paydirt. Central’s two-point conversion rush was no good as the Tigers led early, 6-0. On Central’s ensuing kickoff, Rebel Kelley gained two yards before being tackled by Hafner. Dropping back in the pocket, Surber fired a strike to Haynes right side for a 16-yard gain at the Rebel 36. Following a pass incompletion and five-yard Mitch Merrick gain, Norden was drilled by Hafner as McKenzie was forced to punt from its 41. Gathering in the punt, Dustin Santiago exploded right side and raced across midfield before be- ing brought down at the Rebel 16. Tiger quarterback Chase Bratton completed a one-yard pass to Hafner who was tackled by Cameron Oakley. An offside penalty against McKenzie moved the ball to the Rebel 10. On the ensuing play, Johnson’s 10-yard rushing score was negated by a Tiger holding penalty as the ball was moved back to the McKenzie 22. Following a five-yard gain by Johnson, Bratton’s pass attempt to Hafner was intercepted near the Central end zone by Rebel Kelley and returned to the McKenzie 30. Gambling on fourth and 10, Rebel Surber faked a punt and fired a completion to Haynes who raced 70 yards to score. Surber’s two-point conversion pass failed as McKenzie knotted the score, 6-6 with 1:06 remaining in the first quarter. Tiger Santiago was tackled on the Rebel kickoff by Paul Watkins at the Tiger 17. With three sec- onds remaining in the first stan- za, Johnson ignited left side and blazed 84 yards to the end zone. Johnson’s two-point conversion rush was no good as Central re- captured the lead, 12-6. Rebel Kelley returned the Tiger kickoff to the McKenzie 35. A five- yard rush by Merrick and six-yard scamper by Norden moved the chains. At the 5:51 mark of the second canto, Surber unleashed a beautiful 45-yard scoring arc to Haynes and Norden rushed for the two-point conversion as McKenzie grabbed the lead, 14-12. Tiger Jon-Austin Welsh cov- ered the Rebel squib kick at the Tiger 38. Johnson and Santiago combined for rushes of two and five yards to bring up a third and three at the Central 45. On the ensuing play, Johnson’s fumble was recovered by Rebel Branson McCaleb at the 4:07 mark of the second quarter. Strong defensive play by Hafner forced McKenzie to punt on fourth and five with McKenzie downing the ball at the Tiger 34. Lining up in the shotgun forma- tion, Tiger quarterback Bratton fired a swing pass left side to Hafner who raced 66 yards to score. The two-point conversion failed as Central snared the lead, 18-14. Advancing the ball to its 46 on the ensuing kickoff, the Rebels came up big as Surber fired a 41- yard completion under pressure to Kelley to move the ball to the Tiger 15. Merrick ground straight ahead to the 10. On the next play, Surber’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Logan Belew who was tackled while attempting to return the ball at the Tiger 1 with 1:16 remaining in the first half. Tiger quarterback Bratton fol- lowed the Central line surge for an eight-yard gain. McKenzie’s defensive line responded by stop- ping Johnson for no gain. Rebel de- fender McNulty dropped Johnson behind the line at the four to force Central to punt on fourth and six. Tiger Santiago’s punt was blocked and recovered by Rebel Jeremiah Daily at the Central 3 with 17.6 clicks left in the second quarter. Rolling left side, Surber fired a scoring strike to Noah McEwen. Merrick’s two-point conversion attempt failed as McKenzie led at the half, 20-18. Quarterback sacks for loss by Tigers Cody Knuutila and Dalton Caswell stopped McKenzie’s sec- ond-half opening drive and forced the Rebels to punt away. Hafner returned the Rebel kick to the McKenzie 38. Powering straight ahead, Hafner carried four con- secutive times to pound the ball across midfield and deep into Rebel territory. Central capped its impressive drive via Johnson’s 21-yard gallop with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The two-point conversion failed as Central led, 24-20. McKenzie dodged the bullet on its ensuing possession as Haynes recovered a fumble at the Tiger 42 as time expired in the third stanza. The Rebels wasted little time putting points on the board early in the fourth quarter as Surber spiraled a 30-yard scoring strike to Haynes and Norden added the two-point conversion as McKenzie regained a 28-24 lead. Santiago fielded the Rebel kick- off at the 14 and returned the ball to the Central 44. Johnson raced left side for a first down at the 39 and left the game after being injured. Hafner responded with a 43-yard scoring dash and added the two-point conversion as Central took the lead in the see-saw battle, 32-28, with 5:28 remaining in the game. McKenzie’s next offensive drive featured strong rushing by Norden and Merrick and pinpoint passing from Surber to Kelley. Marching across the midfield stripe and deep into Central territory, Norden sealed the deal by erupting right side to score at the 1:28 mark and notched the two-point conversion as McKenzie earned a hard-fought 36-32 victory over the Tigers.
