historic Team bowling concept to debut with 2013 “Pba league”

eight star-studded teams, singles events will be part of unique detroit Pba winter swing

SEATTLE – The Professional Bowlers Association will introduce an eight-team pro bowling league for the 2012-13 season, featuring PBA stars as Franchise Players, a draft of PBA members to fill out the five-player team rosters and a television series resulting in six ESPN telecasts, PBA Commissioner Tom Clark announced today.

The historic PBA League will make its debut during the Detroit PBA Winter Swing Jan. 19-27 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., feature a live ESPN show on Sunday, Jan. 27 of PBA League Round 1 action and conclude with the PBA League Elias Cup Finals, honoring PBA founder Eddie Elias, at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis on Sunday, March 31 (airing Sunday, April 7 on ESPN).

“Bowling has deep roots in team competition,” Clark said. “As a part of its 2012-13 season, the PBA is going to return five-player team bowling competition to the spotlight, but in a way it has never before been seen.”

Details on significant aspects of the league such as team names, owners and sponsors will be released soon.

Here’s how the PBA League will work:

THE TEAMS ● The PBA League will consist of eight five-player teams, each representing a city to be named later. Each team will be headed by a Franchise Player – a PBA star who will draft players to fill his team. The Franchise Players will be the top eight players from the 2011-12 PBA Tour competition points list: Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.; Jason Belmonte of Australia; Mike Fagan of Dallas; Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo.; Osku Palermaa of Finland; Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla.; Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., and Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas. ● There will be a draft involving all PBA members who make themselves eligible. PBA members must declare eligibility with the PBA by 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific on Friday, Nov. 2. By de-claring eligibility, those PBA members are promising to compete in the January 2013 PBA League events if they are drafted. ● On Friday, Nov. 2, official practice day for the PBA World Series of Bowling in Las Vegas, a random drawing will determine the selection order for the eight Franchise Players. Each Franchise Player will draft four additional players to fill out his roster from the list of PBA members who have registered to participate in the program. ● The draft itself will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, and air live on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s online bowl-ing channel. It will be done in “serpentine” fashion whereby each Franchise Player will pick one player in pre-determined order. Whomever picks eighth will also pick ninth, and the draft order will be reversed, moving back up the list. The Franchise Player who picked first will then pick 16th and 17th, etc. The draft will consist of five rounds (to allow for selection of a sixth, or supplemental, player) Check out more details on www.pba.com.Las Vegas Welcomes the

ABTAKeystone Lanes - October 20

NORWALK — We returned to Keystone Lanes where we saw a decent turnout of 179 entries come out on Saturday for a nice fun filled event. On a semi- tough but fair shot the cut scores were +43 for the men and +14 for the women also Super Seniors added to the board (two men and one Woman) were Jack Trongale +12, Walter White +10, and Joyce Charles +7. Super se-niors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 42 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

The High qualifiers were “Iron Mike” Villareal for the men with a +153. For the women it was Jennifer Grant with a +83. They will get a paid entry into a future regu-lar ABTA event. Each week our top seed draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $592. Mike would drew a 430. We had one bowler that bowled this score and it was Mike Moore. Therefore, we will estimate the Match Series at $350 at this week’s Forest Lanes event. Ricardo Baca, and Leonard Garcia were last standing. Both missed on their last shot for the 3-6-9, so they split the $50 consolation.

The pot will be at $1,200 at Lake Forest Lanes.

In our optional doubles, leaders were Sam Wu and Bil-ly Chao with a 1350 for $120. In second were Emilo Flores and Tao Yang with a 1348 for $100. There was a total of $1,360 paid out in doubles and 26 paid spots with low to cash of 1270.

In the semifinals, Gerry Manalo led the field at +168 to sit out and bowl for the title. Finishing in second was Emilo Flores at a +104. He will sit out the first round of the top Single Elim Finals. Gerry had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. He drew a 255. We had no bowlers who shot that score. We still have four full pots and now a fifth pot started that is at $2,120. Next week we will go for $3,500 again.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven los-ers were Ricardo Baca, Mien Barcelona, Bobbie McCollum, Rithay Ath, William Garrett, George Parker, and Thomas Chavez, each will get $100. In round two, the four losers were Beth Borci, Tao Yang, George Alford Jr, and Billy Chao, each getting checks of $105.

This would get us down to the final five bowlers. The weekly horses are paying a low of $21, (Emilio Flores)to a high of $161. (Both Ro-land Suase and Giang Huynh.)In one match, the tenth seed was Sam Wu versus Roland Suase, the eleventh seed. This was another of our low scoring matches, Sam advancing with a 170/224 to 164/215 final. In the other match, it was Giang Huynh the thirteenth seed ver-sus Emilio Flores the second seed. This was another one of the medium scoring matches. This match went down to the tenth frame where it was Emi-lo ecking out the close victory with a 169/223 to 168/218 to advance. Giang and Roland finished in fourth and fifth get-ting checks for $112.50 each.

Our semi-final match was set, and would pit the sec-ond and tenth seeds from the semis against each other. In the weekly “horses”, we would see Emilo paying $21 and Sam paying $50 if they would win their match. Both bowlers would have the same HDCP so it would be a scratch match. Sam would lead off the match with an open. Emilo would start out with a spare but follow that with an open.

Sam would come up and get marks in his next six shots and Emillo would have opens in the fourth and sixth frames to put him down by 22 pins, and he would not recover from that. Sam would finish out with a 170/224 to 149/203 to advance. Emilo would take home $200 for his third place finish. For those lucky “inves-tors” that had Sam as a horse got $50.

The title game was all set. It would be top qualifier Gerry Manalo going for his first title and Sam Wu also for his first championship. Sam would start out with an open. Gerry would get a spare and then double to start his first three frames. Sam was able to come back with marks in the second thru fourth frames, but an open in the fifth. Gerry would get an open in the fourth and then a spare and strike in the fifth and sixth frames, at that point, he had a 12-pin lead. He would add to that lead with strikes in the seventh and eighth frames then cruise to victory with a 210/258 to 166/220 and take his first ABTA title. He would take home $1,100 for the vic-tory and an additional $850 for Cash and Carry to give him a total of $1,850. Sam would

take home $500 for his second place finish.

Champion Gerry Manalo is from Northridge and used a Critical Theory drilled by Rusty at Mission Hills. He is single and would like to thank his family, especially his brothers Pat and Bo, who both are regular bowlers, and great people, along with Nancy, the ABTA and its staff.

He is single and would like to thank all his friends at Foot-hill Lanes, Carlos, Peng, the ABTA and its Staff, and lets not forget ‘Lion Fan” Tony Leogrande. They should have won Mondays Game :_)

Guerrero becoMes FIFTh woMan To wIn Pba reGIonal TITle

AUSTIN — Colombian native Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas, became the fifth woman to win a PBA Regional title Sun-day when she posted a 7-4-1 match play record and a 25-game total of 5,869 pins to top Tyler Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas, by 26 pins in the PBA Southwest Region’s Young and Pratt Austin Open at Dart Bowl in Austin, Texas.

Guerrero, a former PBA Women’s Series competitor and long-time member of the Colombian national team, built a 200-pin lead midway through the round robin match play finals before Jensen won three matches in a row, shooting 780 in the process, to narrow the lead to 60 pins heading into position round. He started the final game with six strikes, but failed to convert a 4-5 split, and Guerrero closed her game with four strikes to lock up the $2,500 first prize along with her title.

The other women who have won PBA Regional titles include Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Missy Parkin, Lake For-est, Calif. (two); Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. (two); and Shannon O’Keefe, Arlington, Texas. Amy Stolz of Castle Rock, Colo., also won a regional, but was not a member at the time and there-fore didn’t receive credit for a PBA title.

300 side by sideby Frank Weiler

REDLANDS — Bowling in the Noonlighters Senior League at EMPIRE BOWL recently Ray Smith and Dave Hill rolled perfect games side by side. Well, nearly side by side. They each scored 300 in the third game of league play just a few lanes apart.

It was Mister Smith’s first perfect game. He had an 800 series last season but did so without a perfect game. For Mister Hill it was perfecto number four. His first three were bowled at DEL ROSA LANES. Both men carry a

200 plus average and score consistently high.

Smith used his Ebonite Mission 250K for a 769 (191 - 277 - 300) while Hill used his Storm Nano for a 774 (236 - 238 - 300).

During the ten minute warm up session before league play Smith knew he had a chance to score big. He struck on all eight practice shots. Eight for eight strikes, all solid. While he finished the day with twenty-seven strikes on his last twenty-nine shots, he started slow. Inexplicably, three splits in the first seven frames of game one cost Mis-ter Smith an 800 series.

Things were not as dra-matic for Dave but the results were about the same.

Great bowling guys, the BOWLING NEWS salutes both of you. Who says senior citizens can’t score? Thanks to the BOWLING NEWS the world knows seniors can.

by Darlene HomGARDEN GROVE —

Cooler weather took us to Valley View Lanes for week 9 where the scores seem to have cooled off too, but a good time was had by all. We would like to thank Valley View Lanes for the coffee and water.

The high rollers for the day were Doris Lewis 200/545, Pearlie Watts 524, Linda Kin-ney 508, Aresia McGee 502, Audry Thubodeaux 500, and Maxx Paul 200. The high hand-icap series was 1961 by West-minster 2 and a high handicap game of 708 by Valley View 1. Westminster 2 leads the league with 23 wins; and Westminster 1 close behind with 19.

The Perfect Game by Steve FelegeSet-up by Carol Mancini

Carol: Gooood morning Steve!Steve: Good morning Carol....uh.....why are you grinning? Bad things always happen to me when you grin like that!Carol: I’m not grinning. Hey Dean, am I grinning? Tell Steve I’m not grinning!Dean: You’re grinning!Carol: I am not!Dean: Okay, you’re smiling effusively.Carol: That’s better. Wait a minute, what........Dean: Oh, for Heaven’s sake; just tell him what’s going on!Steve: Uh-oh. Am I gonna need bandages?Carol: Nope.Steve: Sutures? Carol: Unh-unh.Steve: A splint?Carol: NO! Where do you keep getting these ideas?Steve: Well, since I came out here to help write this column, I’ve been threatened by a violent criminal, thrown head-first down lane #8, and put in a “hammer-lock” hold by a lady wrestler. I’m living under a bridge, eating styrofoam packaging peanuts, and you won’t renegotiate my contract which was written while I was jet-lag delirious! I’m starting to see a pattern, that’s all. Carol: So, you’re ready for some good news?Steve: I’m ready to go back to Pennsylvania!Carol: A good coach never breaks a promise. If I send you back to PA, how will you give those free lessons to Cecil like you promised?Steve: Cecil?! I thought he had to serve another four months!Carol: Hey, Dean! Would you be so kind as to show our guests in?Steve: Guests?Dean: Cecil, come on in.....and bring your mom.Steve: Cecil! How are you, big guy? I’ve been looking forward to this day!Carol: Steve, I would like to introduce you to your biggest challenge yet!Steve: Cecil?Carol: No......his mother. Come on in “Ma”!Ma: So this here’s the fool that thinks he’s a better coach than me, huh. Well let me tell you somethin’ Steeeeeve, I got certified by the American Junior Bowling Congress a long time ago! I been coaching my boy since he was in diapers and I have personally read a whole book about bowling.Steve: Have you read mine?Ma: You wrote a book? Who are you to write a book? You’re nobody, that’s who you are! At least I ain’t never heard of ya!Steve: It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Mrs.......?Ma: Just call me “Ma” and I’d prefer that you just don’t call me! I’ll let you coach my boy, but I swear, if I catch you teaching him even one thing I don’t agree with....Steve: Carol, you’re grinning again!Carol: Imagine that! How are you going to handle this one, Steeeeeve?Steve: With grace and diplomacy, thank you very much! Cecil, please sit down while I talk to your mom.Ma: Don’t you tell my boy to sit down! I’m his coach, and his Ma! Cecil, SIDDOWN!Cecil: Yes, Ma.....Steve: Cecil, I have to take back my offer to coach you.Cecil: But....Steve: Let me explain. Your mom is the only coach you’ve ever had. Am I right?Cecil: Un-huh.Steve: You trust her, don’t you? Cecil: Well, sure......Steve: Well.......she doesn’t trust me, so anything I teach you she’ll just beat right back out of you. I’ll be wasting my time.Cecil: So you’re quittin’ on me?Steve: Never! But this will only work if I train your mom so that she can still be your coach.Ma: Say what?!Steve: You heard me, Ma! What do you say? Do you want to teach Cecil how to be a winner?Ma: Can you guarantee that. Steve: I can.Cecil: She’ll be able to teach me how to whip Mr. Happy Dance?Steve: Cecil, if you bowl against Bill enough times, you will eventually beat him even if you don’t change a thing. That’s the nature of bowling. I can only teach skills that will enable you to outscore him more often. Applying those skills is up to you.Cecil: When do we start?Steve: Right now. Ma, Cecil has two weaknesses in his game and Bill exploits both. The first is his mental game. He can’t focus, so Bill is able to get into his head. Ma: And you think we can fix that?!Steve: We have to! Competitive bowling is more about the mental game than the physical one. Carol, can I see your copy of my book.Carol: Sure, here you go. Steve: RRRRiiiiippppp. Carol: Hey! What are you doing!Steve: I’ll get you another one. Ma, this is chapter one of The Essentials of Bowling. It’s about focusing. I want you to read it. If you agree with what I’ve written, have Cecil read it and come back next week.

bowlers Journal to sponsor Pba scorpion championship

America’s oldest sports monthly magazine to launch 100th anniversary celebration at WSOB IV

SEATTLE — In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Bowlers Journal International magazine - America’s oldest continuous-ly-published monthly sports magazine – has been named titled sponsor of the Bowlers Journal PBA Scorpion Championship which will be held during PBA World Series of Bowling IV.

“We are thrilled to launch our 100th Anniversary promotion campaign by sponsoring a PBA event,” said Luby Publishing President Keith Hamilton. “It’s great to be working with the PBA again.”

Qualifying and match play in the Bowlers Journal PBA Scor-pion Championship will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas with the four-player steplad-der finals set for Sunday, Nov. 11, on the special WSOB lane in-stallation in South Point Exhibition Hall A. The 90-minute finals will air on ESPN on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m. ET.

The qualifying and match play rounds on Nov. 6 will be web-cast live, exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling chan-nel.

“The entire bowling community can be proud of this mile-stone year for Bowlers Journal. For the magazine to consistently provide the highest quality of coverage of the entire industry for a century is remarkable,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “The PBA is proud to partner with Bowlers Journal at the World Series for the Scorpion Championship and to help make a world-wide audience aware of the magazine’s rich history.”

Bowlers Journal International was founded in 1913 by Dave Luby. It has covered the sport from the days of pinboys through the introduction of automatic scoring, the evolution of televised bowling, leagues, tournaments and all aspects of bowling ball and lane technology. “The BJ” has done more to cover the busi-ness, recreational and sport sides of bowling around the world than any other publication under the leadership of Dave Luby, his son Mort, and later his grandson Mort Jr. In 1994, Mort Luby Jr. sold the company to long-time employees Keith Hamilton and Mike Panozzo. Today, it remains bowling’s foremost magazine.

The magazine has evolved over the years. It began as “The National Bowlers Journal and Billiard Revue.” In 1988, the com-pany changed its corporate name from National Bowlers Journal, Inc. to Luby Publishing Inc. Currently Bowlers Journal also de-livers both consumer and bowling business news and informa-tion to an international audience through BowlersJournal.com, The BJI Cyber Report and e-bowler.

REMEMBERING EARLWhen famed artist LeRoy Neiman was commissioned to

do a painting for the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum, he and Frank Esposito selected Earl Anthony as the focal point. They felt that Anthony in action captured the meaning, muscle, and nuances of the sport.

They were right. On and off the lanes, Anthony conveyed what bowling

was and should be about. When Anthony died at age 63, bowling lost a legend, and many of us lost a good friend.

Anthony could have a little record book of his own. He had the most pro tour titles, 41, and 10 or more of them were majors, according to varying definitions of majors. He won titles in 14 consecutive years, was Bowler and Player of the Year six times, named Bowler of the 1970s and the best of the century. He was elected to bowling’s highest honors, the ABC and PBA Halls of Fame, the first year he was eligible, and has been honored by many groups in many ways for many reasons for many years.

Many of his records have or will be broken. But never to be erased are the facts that he was the first pro bowler to win $100,000 in a single year, 1975, when first place prizes were as low as $3,000, and was the first to crack the mil-lion dollars in career earnings, in 1982. His ultimate honor came when he was selected greatest PBA player.

“I worked hard on my game,” said Anthony. “I always wanted to be the best and was always proud when I won or came up with a record. Records are made to be broken but it’s nice to know you were the first to do certain things better than your peers. I’ve always been competitive and if I’m going to do something, I do my best or not at all.”

As Harry Golden, former PBA tournament director, who witnessed most of Anthony’s wins, noted, “Earl was one of those fierce competitors who did not like to lose at anything to anybody.”

It all wasn’t as easy as Anthony made it look. After a promising baseball career was cut short at 21 because of injuries, he turned more to bowling. From the time he was 10 Earl had dreamed of being a top pitcher, and he came so close, clocked as high as throwing 95 miles an hour.

He failed in his first outing as a pro, but returned to his Tacoma, Wash. home area, fine tuned his athletic talent, and came back big. Yet, he was 31 when he won his first title in 1970, an age when most athletes are on their way down.

When Anthony began to gain notice it was almost as much as his unfashionable crew-cut hair, glasses, and qui-et demeanor as it was for his pin toppling.

But he was not to be denied. He won titles of every kind. With his PBA tour and other national telecasts he was on the living room screen some 200 times, meaning he was seen full face and figure, from half an hour to an hour and a half. It made him a familiar personality wherever he went.

His bowling talent, once established, was universally praised.

“He is an awesome machine”, wrote Hall of Fame writer Dick Evans.

Bowling great Marshall Holman said, “He was just about the best at everything”. And famed coach John Jowdy echoed that sentiment, “He was among the best in every part of the sport, and if he was having problems with any part of his game, he knew how to work out of it.”

“It was beyond belief that any bowler could be better”, said Steve James. ABC Hall of Fame secretary.

Gary Mage, a former doubles partner, said, “He was al-ways a thinker. He checked himself out like a pilot before takeoff. He was so thorough he could almost predict every shot.”

Though he suffered a major heart attack in 1977, he came back less than a year later and went on to score major wins in regular and senior competition.

Until his death he remained in bowling as a TV com-mentator, bowling proprietor and involved in a number of bowling enterprises. He has received the highest praise from everyone in TV he ever worked with, including brod-casting’s best, Chris Schenkel, Denny Schreiner and Jay Randolph.

No man gave more of his time, effort, prestige and fi-nances to such causes as the Hall of Fame, veterans, children and charities too numerous to mention. As ABC president Tom De Chalus said, “His contributions to the ABC and to bowling can never be fully measured and ap-preciated.”

I worked closely with Anthony on a number of projects, including an annual bowling fans quide, telecasts and vid-eos, and had the honor of being his PBA Hall of Fame pre-sentor.

Whether it was in a bowling center, TV studio, veteran’s hosptial, hotel restaurant, airport or shopping center, he never refused an autograph request. He signed on pic-tures, scraps of paper, hats, shoes, bags, and every item of clothing. And he often added a little pleasant chatter.

Almost always, after every autograph he thanked those who asked.

At the BPAA Bowl Expo in Las Vegas, Anthony was a featured host at one of the booths and the lines were long all day, varied assortment of signature seekers.

It was the same old Earl, smiling, talkative, a perfect people’s person, and he never failed to say thanks.

He will always be revered as the Earl who became the King of his sport.

TOP 2 TEAMS ROUND 1

KEGEL IS KING (FOR ROUND ONE) DOWNEY — The much awaited week seven did not develop as

predicted. The “KEGELS” came — saw — and conquered! Middleman Randy Myers spared his way to a 635. J.T. Jackson posted a 279, game 3, to support his 700. Ramiro Garcia’s consistent 258-276-227/761, sparked his leadoff position. Again this week Bobby Campagnale an-chored his team at the finish line and hoisted his victory flags. 300-222-279/801. His two-handed delivery is paying off! 2 side-pots Monday night.

Steve Gurrieri’s 280 was good for pot #2. Leonard Ruiz split pot #3 with Bobby.

The “FINANCIAL ADVISORS” game 2 pot was split by Joe Jimenez and Ken Di Iorio, 278/278.

The “BOWLIUM” bunch took a whoopin’ from KEGEL. They all rolled 6’s, but lost total pins by 425 sticks. The good news is — the slate is clean and round two starts at ZERO.

The second round lane condition is listed as DRY, 26 feet of oil and not a fun playing field. The common name is the “Short Oil Round”.

Even the “U.H.T.B.” team with only 3 wins this round has a chance to win one of the next rounds or catch a wild card.

A few teams will juggle players, but the biggest juggling act comes in choosing new equipment and playing new lines.

Congrats “KEGEL”.
