CONGRATULATIONS

What Ever Happened to “Thank you?”by CBW President, Mary Lynly

NORWALK — Over the years I have seen several articles on people’s inability to acknowledge gifts they receive - Dear Abby, Ann Landers, my friends, etc. As we get older and come from a time where it was an accepted courtesy, have we have failed to instill this in our children? It’s often the older generation who is hit up for various events where gifts are expected and not to receive acknowledgement is not only hurtful but it downright rankles the soul. The younger generation figures they can just send an email – not! I don’t care if we do live in the tech age – in my world that’s a no-no. It takes no particular intellect to pick up a pack of thank you cards that already have a note of some kind on them and add a personal note. An address and stamp and it’s on its way and the giver is one happy camper (and will give again.) I am not sure what the motivation needs to be – embarrassment? Hope you never have to look at the gift giver in the face again? A gnawing at your conscience? Make a point of picking up thank you cards now.

I write the above because we are in the middle of the eroding of our organizations and sport of bowling as we once knew it. I know things have to change but as I wrote some years ago when a company got into merger mania: The company decided to change everything and throw out the old and after a few years when it wasn’t working they went back to the drawing board and discovered what the problem was. They had forgotten the people! As a member of the California Bowling Writers where we endeavor to inform and provide an event that people will enjoy and hopefully the motivation to continue to support us, I am proud that we do endeavor to remember the people. When the California WBA disappeared there was a nucleolus of women who felt that we needed to do something to keep us connected and the California Bowling Writers was formed for that pur-pose. Now, in our 16th year, I feel we have done that with a quarterly newsletter, writing contest, charity endeavor with the Phone cards for the Troops, annual luncheon and recently a successful partnering with California USBC in putting on an Awards Banquet.

I know there are a lot of reasons why people can’t always attend events – the economy, interest, aging of those committed leaders and the willingness of people to embrace leadership roles. Yes, there is a lot of responsibility in accepting a leadership position but the challenge of helping to groom interested, but untested people and molding them into quality leaders who learn to compro-mise and in turn, teach others can be most satisfying.

In addition to remembering to write those thank you notes, consider getting involved in the organizations affiliated with bowling - the sport we all love, and help it to thrive.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

DAN FLORES SHINES WITH 249-920 IN DEAF TRAVEL AT JEWEL CITY BOWLGLENDALE — After a poor showing in its league opener at Keystone Lanes, So. Calif. Deaf

Traveling League did a turnabout in its scheduled stop at Jewel City Bowl. Dan Flores led a honor roll list of 8 bowlers with a 920 gem from games of 237-199-249-235.

The list included two with 800s, Gorman Low had all twos 842 with 201-205-225-211 and Ed Abakumoff a 834 with 190-237-235-172. The rest were Bob Jones with (236) 736, Paul Taffolla, Sr with (201) 723, Bob Taylor (202) 710 and Jeff Stansell with 708. Connie Marchione celebrated his 91st birthday closing with a 201.

In the match play games, three teams Flores’ Orange County, Low’s Hollywood and Abaku-moff’s Riverside made near sweep wins. Hollywood moved up to first place with Low and Jim Mohr sweeping 5 points each in a near swept 15.5 to 4.5 win over Stansell’s Mid City.

Orange County moved up to second place with Flores sweeping 5 points and team sweeping games and series in its 15-5 win over Taylor’s Eagle Rock which fell from first to 4th place River-side moved up to fourth in its 13.5 to 6.5 win over Jones’ S F Valley.

All teams had improved their scores and setting new season highs. The only season high that is not changed is Abakumoff’s individual high game of 253. Flores’ 920 is the new season men’s high series. Team High Series is now Orange County’s 2180 and also the team high series 586 but can not have both. So Team High Game is Hollywood’s 566.

The league thanks Jewel City Bowl management and staff for hosting and good bowling con-ditions. Next travel date and place is October 5 at a long time favorite place Del Rio Lanes with bowling at Noon.

BOWLING NEWSPage 4 September 25, 2014

BAKERSFIELD, CA—Bakersfield has had the opportunity to have Coach Mark Baker come to our town to do lessons over the past couple of years, but this was a first to get him as well as PBA Superstar, Chris Barnes, to be here to conduct their Baker/Barnes 1-Day Clinic as they made their final roll through some cities in CA before wrapping their clinic tour up. Because the response was so good when the sign-ups were taken for this Clinic back in early 2014, a second day was added for a second group to be able to experience this clinic.

The purpose of this article is to give you some insight into what takes place at a Baker/Barnes Clinic as well as share some of the participants’ feedback on what the clinic did for their game of bowling.

The Clinic both days ran from 11am to 5pm. There were 18 participants each day. The first day took place at Regency Lanes (an all-wood center) and the second day was at AMF Southwest Lanes (an all-synthetic center). Our participants ranged from a youth bowler, to several senior and adult league bowlers, to newer bowlers, to bowlers returning back to bowling after taking years off, to several PBA Regional bowlers. Cost to take this Clinic was $200 per person.

The day started out with everyone gathering in a room for a classroom lecture with a power point presentation on The Physical Game done by Mark Baker. We were introduced to both Mark and Chris as well as told their credentials. Barnes holds 17 tour titles, was the 2007-08 Player of the Year, is a 13-time 1st Team All-American, winner of the Triple Crown and is 26th of the Top 50 PBA bowlers of all time among many other accomplishments. He resides in Double Oak, Texas. Baker holds 4 PBA titles and is a coach to many of the top PBA players as well as has written a book called The Game Changer and lives in Yorba Linda, CA.

Baker told us that his goal/statement for this Clinic was to help us become a better bowler by im-proving our game giving us a better understanding of our game and having fun in the process. How he was going to do this was through this power point presentation, then having us use the personal manuals we were each given to take notes of what we each needed to improve our own games through the personal on-lane instruction we each would be receiving from Baker.

The three major areas we worked on were 1) our physical game (to be able to throw the ball consistently); 2) our lane play (line up, adjust); and 3) our equipment (need to have the right ball in your hand for different lane conditions). These three areas were the main areas and there is not enough room to go into depth on each of them, but the Clinic did do that and it was explained in a way that any level of bowler could relate. One of the most interesting examples that Mark showed was when he talked about your stance on the lanes. He brought up Chris to demonstrate in front of the class. Mark demonstrated that when a bowler holds the ball at the start of his approach, and he stands behind that bowler, he should not be able to see the ball in that bowler’s hand when he is standing directly behind him. Baker also had some great examples of different PBA (men and women) to show their steps on the approach and where their arm swing should be at what time. It’s amazing to see how similar bowlers are but yet what each one has that makes their style work for them.

We were then set loose on the lanes to bowl. We had the majority of lanes oiled with the house shot and a pair on the Cheetah pattern and a pair on the Shark. Mark worked with the bowlers on the house shot lanes while Chris worked with those bowling on the PBA patterns. Mark had the majority of the bowlers and it was amazing how he could maneuver from one bowler to the next and give each bowler a personal tip that they could use to improve their next ball they threw. Many times Mark would glance back and see that person turning around after throwing a strike with a grin from ear to ear. All of us got many tips for our time on the lanes which was nearly two hours. We then broke for a quick lunch.

After lunch we were back in the classroom but this time the presenter was Chris Barnes and focused on equipment. He explained a ball’s cover stock and the difference in finished ball surfaces. Everyone bowls different so he stressed the importance of understanding how your ball’s surface reacts and how to adjust to the distance of your breakpoint on the lanes. He then went into an explanation of what your RG is (how fast your ball spins going down the lanes). We then were directed to open our personal manuals and mark down what our Rev Rate was. Some of us had the “deer in the headlight look” and Mark Barnes quickly jumped into action and called each of us out letting us know what our Rev Rate was! Besides him watching you on the lanes giving you tips, yes, he also takes note of what your Rev Rate is!! We then continued on to note our ball speed, axis rotation which then gave us a rating. Novice to pro, it was great to know all of this and will help you with your future ball choice.

Barnes then went into detail on what a bowler’s ball arsenal should consist of. He had six different balls for the arsenal and explained each one in detail. He also stressed the importance of how to maintain your equipment—use a towel between each shot to keep oil off the surface and clean up at the end of the night. He also suggested using adjustable thumbs that are good for different climates.

After this classroom portion was over it was back out on the lanes for more coaching from Mark Baker while Chris Barnes went around to see participant’s ball arsenals and give them advice on what they might want to consider or if they had the right balls for their style of bowling. Chris was very meticulous with each bowler and after this hour and a half session was over that ended our clinic, there were still several bowlers waiting with their balls all lined up waiting for Chris’ evaluation which he took the time to do.

There was so much hope and enthusiasm in the center after everyone finished this clinic, it was great! Here are just a few of the comments I was able to get from participants at this clinic:

Ryan Steele, Reno NV, 185-200 avg.: (had previously taken Dick Ritger clinic) “This clinic was more focused on improving your game. Well worth the money!”

Sean Ambrose, Bakersfield, CA, 216 avg.: “Everything I thought it would be and more. Classroom was awesome. Both spoke to the group well. Mark was great in the practice session as he doesn’t spend too much time with any one person. Chris was more on lane conditions and how to move. Loved having three different lane conditions too. I would do it again if they came back!”

Craig Dowd, Bakersfield, CA, 214 avg.: “Honestly for being off (from bowling) all this time, this was awesome to be with the Great Bakes and Barnes. Mix of house shot with a long and short-oil pattern was great. Found out what we are lacking from our game. Very humbling.”

Jack Regier, Bakersfield, CA, 180-195 avg.: “Ever since my heart operation I couldn’t get enough speed. Mark changed three things in my approach! I’m excited that I might be competitive again!!”

Aris C. Anadilla, Bakersfield, CA, 218 avg.: “Really liked the way he (Mark) doesn’t try and change your game, just enhance it. With Chris, learned a lot more about my equipment—layouts, favorite pattern and cover stock. Makes more sense which balls to use, takes guessing out of it.”

Robert Mayo, Bakersfield, CA, 222 avg.: “My first experience with Mark Baker. He worked on my balance. Great now knowing my category for my equipment and I can translate all this for my balls and what drilling I need.”

Zack Newman, Bakersfield, CA, 229 avg.: “Unbelievable, fabulous experience. Something about face-to-face is nothing like a video! Unbelievable wealth of knowledge! And, you don’t know it all and you can benefit.”

Meet Harry Wong

by Carol ManciniNORWALK — A call to

Harry Wong will brighten your day! A trip to his shop will make you a better bowler and a smarter bowler.

For a guy who has been drilling balls for 41 years, he still has the love of the game. PLUS the desire to keep up wth new equipment and lane conditions.

Check that Ball JIG he uses! It qualifies for the ar-chives, but it works.

Harry is now drilling for third generation bowlers. Heard often in his shop - - - - - “You drilled my granddad’s first ball.” Yikes.

Mr. & Mrs. Wong have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. Not all are bowlers. But he’s a proud “Papa” and still work-ing on them.

300’s don’t come easy but Harry has registered 3 sanc-tioned (and 6 non-sanctioned) I suspect POT GAME 300’s?

This past season Harry was bowling on Monday nights in the Ebonite. Picture this! The auto scorer shows 11 big X’s for our man on lanes 31-32. He picks up his weapon and approaches the foul line. He sticks! He sways! He wob-bles! No one will steady him. Forced forward, he puts his hand down on the wrong side of the foul line and looks up at the pins. FOUL- - - - STRIKE - - - - No count, for a 290 game. Drop by Wong’s Bowling Sup-ply, 960 North Grand Avenue, Covina, or call 626-331-0349.

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

Many a mother worries if her youngster seems too intThere is ever increasing violence in sports, both on and off the field.

The trend hasn’t gone unnoticed, and more than ever, news-papers and TV networks are taking a closer and more worried look.

For years, people in the United States laughed when they learned about the precautions that had to be taken in South Amer-ica to protect players and officials during and after soccer games. They were amazed when it was revealed that a soccer game in-cident was blamed for starting a war in Central America. And they were stunned when moats had to be installed around playing fields to keep players and officials in, and spectators out.

But we have learned quickly. We have constant, questionable violence in the playing of such games as hockey, baseball, foot-ball and basketball. The most violent of all sports, boxing, simply because the main intent is violence, often sees better fights out-side the ring than inside.

And even in the once staid sports such as golf, tennis and bowling, the warning signs are there.

Some sports have managed to escape physical violence. No sport, including bowling, has been able to ward off the rise in abusive and obscene language and gestures.

In its coverage, TV asks for the exposure of what used to be considered offensive language. When you put a mike in a boxer’s corner to catch second’s words between rounds or talk to ath-letes or coaches in the heat of battle, you’re going to get heated words.

Bad language is nothing new in bowling, whether such means darn, dam, hell or any of the no-no words George Carlin refers to so often. But, though bowlers have used every word ever in-vented, and some of their own variations, they were usually con-fined to under the breath utterances or aimed towards the pins or areas where they were seldom overheard by fellow bowlers and those others nearby.

No longer. From the junior bowlers to the pros, the words blurt out, and the less done about it, the more it is done. Remem-ber that old ditty, “sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” It could be wrong. Words may not hurt physically, but they can sure rub people the wrong way.

We have grown used to language changes, and teen age high school girls now often do a swearing job that would make any old time Army Sergeant proud, and maybe make him blush a little too. That doesn’t mean vile language is right or we must accept it.

I can‘t begin to attempt to determine what is proper language and actions and what isn’t, but some of the stuff that comes flying from bowler’s mouths these days sure won’t make many friends and influence others for the spot.

Bowling is an emotional sport on every level, and there must be releases and escape valves, whether they be words, gestures or physical actions.

But there must be limits because the next step is destroying equipment, followed by destroying other bowlers physically. We can’t build moats in bowling centers, but see through plastic bar-riers might some day come along if trends continue.

Let’s talk our sport up, not down.

BOWL

BURBANK — How often do you find yourself in the depths of frustration while bowling? The probable answer is “More often than I’d like”. If you didn’t believe a huge por-tion of good scores starts in the mind it’s time to listen up.

The condition starts innocently enough with a few cor-ner pins or wayward balls and soon escalates into blind frustration. What was once a miss here or there becomes a chronic inability to convert spares or hit your mark.

How does this happen? Emotion greedily grips your brain and no longer allows the logical and sensible part of your brain to function properly. The spiral takes you down and your score with it. Some bowlers throw things, or curse, or worse yet, go deadly silent and withdraw.

Perhaps a new mantra is in order. Keep Calm & Follow Through or New Frame, Fresh Start. And sugar! Preferably in the form of chocolate but any sugar will do. Shock the brain into listening to the Earl Anthony in you and not the Fred Flintstone!Fall Bumpers: (scr) Benaiah McElroy 138/226, Alex Lee 116/226, Jaelin Smith 89/161, Alexis Walker 84/160, Sam-my Tello 68/136.Fall Preps: (hdcp) Chase Martinez 162, Danielle Swais-good 183, Zack Nelson 452, Madison Joneson 477.Fall Juniors: (scr) Peyton Reisch 219, LibbyKJeck 224/570, Tucker Joneson 548. Fellow Players Elect Chris Keane as 2014 PBA50 Dick Weber

Sportsmanship Award WinnerCHICAGO — Veteran PBA50 Tour player Chris Keane of

Cape Coral, Florida has been selected as the Dick Weber Sports-manship Award winner for the 2014 PBA50 Tour season in vot-ing by his fellow competitors.

Keane, 56, has been competing on the PBA50 Tour for four seasons. He has a career-high finish of 12th which came in the 2012 PBA50 Northern California Classic and had three top-20 finishes in 2014, including a best of 14th which also came in the Northern California Classic.

“I’m very honored and proud that my fellow bowlers would think of me that way,” said Keane. “You can’t help but enjoy yourself and have fun (on the PBA50 Tour), so I guess that at-titude was reflected to the other bowlers.”

Keane seized the opportunity to bowl full-time on the PBA50 Tour after selling his car wash and auto repair business several years ago.

“I was a serious league and tournament bowler and it became something of a goal and challenge to see if I could bowl against some of the greats of the game,” he said. “I consider myself very fortunate to be able to spend so much time doing something that is this much fun. I just enjoy the whole experience.”

Also nominated for the award were Bill McCorkle, Patrick King, Sammy Ventura, Parker Bohn III and Amleto Monacelli.

Other 2014 PBA50 Tour award winners were Norm Duke, who earned PBA50 Tour Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors and Johnny Petraglia who earned PBA60 Player of the Year. Player of the Year awards were based on competition points. Recipients will receive their awards during a presentation at the 2015 PBA Senior U.S. Open next June in Las Vegas.

The Dick Weber Sportsmanship Award is named in honor of the PBA legend who won 30 PBA Tour and six PBA50 Tour titles during his Hall of Fame career, and was considered one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors.

MOTHER’S PASSING INSPIRES DJ ARCHER’S

NEAR-PERFECT 878 SERIESHOUSTON — PBA Tour player DJ Archer of Mineral Wells,

Texas, turned an occasion of sorrow into a moment of inspiration on the day of his mother’s death, bowling the highest three-game series of his life.

After learning that his mother Sharon, 59, passed away Monday morning in Baton Rouge, La., after a lengthy battle with cardiac issues, Archer found the strength to go ahead and bowl in his regularly-scheduled league that evening because, he said, that’s what his mother would have wanted him to do.

What he didn’t expect was that he would bowl a personal-best 878 series and nearly add his name to the bowling history books when he finished just two shots away from a 900 in the Armadilla Dollars League at Armadillo Lanes 2 in Houston.

“I felt like she was looking over me,” said Archer, whose mother had been in a cardiac rehabilitation center in Baton Rouge for several months.

“I was dealing with a lot of emotions, but I know my mom would have wanted me to go ahead and bowl,” the 12-year PBA Tour veteran continued. “She and my dad (Dan, who died when DJ was 22) were very supportive of me and really got me started in the sport when I was five years old. But my mom was the one who really pushed me in bowling.”

Archer, a former collegiate star at West Texas A&M, started his series with a 300 game. He followed by a 279 which included a double before leaving a 10 pin and then striking the rest of the way. He concluded the set with a 299, leaving another 10 pin on his final shot.

“It was an incredible feeling because it felt like I could strike on every shot,” Archer said. “Being around friends and getting a lot of support from everyone in the league also was a great help and kept me in a positive state of mind. It was kind of like bowling on TV.”

Archer will return to competition in the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas in late October where he will try to improve on his PBA Tour career-high second-place finish in the 2013 Carmen Salvino Classic.

A memorial service will be held for Sharon Archer on Friday, Sept. 19 at Christian Life Fellowship, 2037 Quail Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70808 (telephone: 225-769-6760) from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Gideon’s International for placement of bibles around the world. Messages of sympathy may also be sent to DJ via email at [email protected].
