Before you startSetoutaspacecoveredinnewspaperwiththePVAglueandpaintbrushes.
Weallcreatealotofwaste.Butwecanreduce this by turning our rubbish into something useful and beautiful. Have a go at creating your own upcycled bowl.
What to doGetintoPatrolsandeachtakeamagazine.
Thefirstpartofyouractivityisatimetrial to create the material for your
bowls. Fold as many strips as you can. You’ve got ten minutes. Go!
Strip making
• Tearapagefromamagazineandfolditinhalf lengthways.
• Tearorcutalongthefold.• Takeoneofthestripsandfolditinhalf
lengthways,thenunfold.• Nowfoldeachsideintothecentre,asin
pictureA.• Foldthesidesintothecentreagain,then
foldinhalftomakealongstrip,asinpictureB.Yourfinalstripshouldbeabout1.5cm wide.
• Makesureyouleanonthefold,soitdoesn’tcome undone.
Whentime’sup,sharethestripsoutequallybetweenyourPatrol.Layyours
outendtoendandtapethemtogether,likein picture C.

Takeoneendofyourstripandstarttotightlyrollitup.Makesureyoukeep
yourrolltightanddon’tletgo.Whenyoureachtheend,tapeitdown.
Top tipRolling your strip flat on the floor can help keep it tight.
Your rolled strips will now look like adisc.Turnitintoabowlbygently
pushing down each layer and spreading out thecoils,asinpicturesDandE.
Whenyou’rehappywiththeshapeofyourbowl,sealtheinsidebycoatingit
withPVAglue.
Top tipMixalittlewaterintotheglueforeasierapplication and to hold the shape of your bowl.
Allowtodryforfiveminuteswhileyouadmireyourbowls.Whichonestands
out,andwhy?Howwouldyouchangethebowldesignifyoumadeitagain?
Whenthefiveminutesisup,turnyourbowl over and cover the outside with
PVAglueandleavetodrywhileyoutidyup.Whatcouldyouuseyourbowlfor?
