MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNTY PRESIDENT It is hard to believe that we celebrated the County’s 40th birthday this year. In some ways it seems like yesterday but to those of us who are still around, it is a lifetime ago. Some things are still the same but there are so many more restrictions and rules today, that it makes it much harder to be spontaneous in planning our programme. I know the rules are all there for a very good reason and the safety of our young members must always be paramount, so it is all the more amazing that guiders can still give their girls such a varied and exciting programme. I’m sure that guiders in other counties organise wonderful things, but I’m prejudiced, North Tyneside are the very best! The Awards night in February, saw some rather emotional citations from the Division Commissioners giving awards to their guiders, who had carried on guiding in very difficult circumstances. 2nd Killingworth Guides, who won the President’s Challenge Shield for service to the community, had shown real commitment to helping others and I know there were many more units who had given time and energy to a number of good causes. I’m looking forward to hearing what you’ve been doing for the Challenge in 2013. The highlight for awards was the presentation of the Laurel Award to Margaret Heron, who has done so many great things for our County and others in guiding. This was an inspiration for us all, but I know that we have many unsung heroines, who work tirelessly for their units, week after week. Their reward is seeing their young people enjoy guiding and watching them grow into caring, responsible citizens of the future. Possibly the biggest achievement we’ve had this year, is the re-building of Cheviot View, a truly remarkable building and a great credit to Vivienne, our County Commissioner and the team who have worked so hard to raise the funds to pay for it. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there at the opening. Dorothy Smith

COUNTY COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

2013 was dominated for me by Cheviot View. We had taken the decision to fundraise and push the redevelopment of the site so we pressed on with the work started for us by Charity Fundraising. Applications to trusts take time to complete, no two are the same and the whole process is at times very frustrating. But I have to say, having Shaun pushing the process along, has made it bearable and just look what we have achieved so far!

Our thanks must go to John Downing for his expertise, tremendous support and sense of humour. His team have worked through the many tweaks we have made to plans, which seemed to happen during most site visits.

We now have a building in place with lots of internal work still needed but we are well on the way to having the outdoor centre we thought was only a pipe dream.

I hope that you will all take time to visit and ultimately stay at our new house. I can't tell you yet when it will open but you will be the first to know when the date is set. In the meantime we will reopen the campsite and I know some bookings are in already.

So what else have we been up to? Well this report gives a wonderful summary of how busy our County gets. Girls in North Tyneside are offered such a varied exciting programme of activities as ever it amazes me what a small team of enthusiastic guiders can deliver.

Our presentation evening celebrated many guiding achievements around the Divisions and was a chance to say thank you to many individuals. Later in the year we then celebrated our 40th birthday with a party at Percy Park. Joined by about 150 members and friends the venue was packed, the support was fantastic. And of course, we had a few extra special guests as we celebrated Margaret Heron being presented with a Laurel Brooch. A very well deserved award!

My thanks go the whole County team for your support through another year. To Dorothy who is always a sensible head at the end of the phone when I

need her advice and of course to Julia in the office who keeps the ship afloat and sailing into the wind.

To our leadership team, thank you, for your time and dedication making our guiding game such fun each week with our young members. Please also extend my thanks to your partners and families who support you and tolerate the time that you all give.

Vivienne Barke

BENTON DIVISION REPORT Well it’s that time of year again. I just don’t know where the time has gone. Another fantastic guiding year in Benton! The main focus was adult recruitment, to reduce waiting lists which were beginning to spiral out of control. We tried lots of new ways. It paid off in the end, as we managed to get enough leaders to open up 1 rainbow unit and 2 brownie units. All are now full with waiting lists! So we will need to carry on with the recruitment of adults in 2014. Onesies have taken over this year, with units raising money with onesie walks and also having ‘onesie’ nights. Rainbows visited a local church; held a Roald Dahl theme evening and had a visit from “party animals”, who brought along a tarantula and snake. Brownies had visits from guide dogs and their owners; held a bugs ball and made dream catchers for sick children in hospital. Guides have worked alongside Beamish museum on a suffragette project; had visits from the guide dogs and worked on “I’m a guide, get me out of here” challenge. As for senior section they have been out for meals, as well as baking in their meeting place and have had a pamper evening. One unit designed their own mediaeval challenge and badge, which is proving to be very successful. Trips out were extremely popular; to the

beach, roller-skating; Parklands crazy golf, Amicis, and even having breakfast with Santa! The Big Gig for our Guides is still extremely popular.

Division events have included a ‘monster’ party; Brownies swimming gala; ‘Jack and

the Beanstalk’ at the Theatre Royal and Flamingoland for the Guides. Rainbows went to a pantomania workshop; Brownies to Round the Twist soft play; Guides to Frankie & Benny’s and the cinema and guiders had a buffet, quiz and disco. Brownies went to Cheviot View, Seahouses and Moorhouse. Guides went to Cheviot View, camped at Plessey woods and took part in the 1st Guide festival “Wellies and Wristbands” at Waddow, where they met the Chief Guide. Leaders had a training and murder mystery night at Waddow.

Some of our crazy

leaders went into the North Sea on

New Year’s Day, to raise funds. I am pleased to say that the Trefoil

Guild has re-opened. Sarah Jones, guider with both 1st

Forest Hall and 2nd

Killingworth guides, received the mayor’s award for her commitment to guiding and always going the extra mile. 2 girls completed their BP awards. The support has been tremendous. I am so lucky to have such a dedicated group of adults providing activities, giving up their weekends and school holidays to ensure the girls get the best guiding can offer. Thank you Benton Division. You are all fantastic! Joanne Hogg

MONKSEATON DIVISION REPORT This year has brought new challenges and changes for us all. It has been fun, messy, exciting and above all busy. Shiremoor and Monkseaton Districts merged, meaning that we are all relishing the chance of working together as a closer Division team. Audrey Adams completed her term as Commissioner and our thanks go to her, for all her hard work and support. Nine leaders enjoyed the training weekend at Waddow, a huge increase on past years. Five leaders jumped off the Vermont Hotel in aid of Cheviot View. We sang in the Choir at York Minster and provided some stewards. We received equipment from the Active Kids scheme and one unit benefited from the Guide Friendship fund. We organised tree planting at Cheviot View. There is now even a Division Ranger Unit.

The Rainbows have had a busy year. Rainbows had Princess and Pirate parties; celebrated Chinese New Year; visited Humpty Dumpty; performed in Nativity plays; planted bulbs; had a Division Rainbow picnic and enjoyed the campfire at the Quarry. In July, the Girls and Leaders in the 1st Monkseaton Rainbows decorated and sent a card to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to celebrate the birth of Prince George. They all received an individual reply and photograph from the Duke and Duchess, thanking them. We have lots of girls 'waiting to join' Rainbows, and have been recruiting more leaders with

the intention of setting up new units in the New Year. The Brownies have been extremely busy, completed over 15 different interest badges as units; held a 'Granny night' with Bingo and Beetle drive; went to Edinburgh Zoo and Pack Holiday. Brownies went on an

alien hunt; had a pizza party; a movie night; a Tae Kwon Do party; fish and chip walks; evenings at Hot Potz and Paper Cuts; a campfire in

the rain (enjoyed by all) and Animal Antics with a variety of animals, including a tarantula and owls! The Guides had a hip hop and street dance evening; numerous onesie parties; celebrated firework night with sparklers (edible and real!); had sandcastle building competitions; built the Eiffel tower, out of waffles (and got exceedingly messy!); been ice skating at the Centre for Life; travelled to London and Sheffield for the Big Gig; attended Wood You?, the County campfire & Lightwater

Valley trip; went carol singing at an old folk’s

home; planted trees

at Holywell Dene and played & slept in soft play areas! It has been a very enjoyable year for the girls, but all this wouldn't have been possible without all the leaders, unit helpers and volunteers. I would like to say a big thank you to you all, and I look forward to 2014 and all the challenges it will bring.

NORTH SHIELDS DIVISION REPORT This has been another busy year in North Shields. I’m very pleased to say that we have had two new units open, a new Senior Section unit and a new Rainbow unit. The new Senior Section unit meets at Trefoil House. I think it is fantastic that we are able to make use of this great facility. The leaders have created a display in the main meeting room, which shows some of the interesting activities the girls have been getting up to.

All of our units have enjoyed a wide range of activities, from crafts and games in the meeting place, to evenings out, day trips and residential events. Our Brownies enjoyed Brownie holidays at Seahouses, Whitburn and Spennymoor, whilst the Guides enjoyed Guide camps and a trip to Kingswood. The Rainbows have been to the beach and bowling, amongst all sorts of other trips. In the summer, two units had a taste of fame when they went to see the filming of a new TV programme for CBBC. The girls were very excited to see the cast of Tracy Beaker and to wave at the cameras.

We’ve enjoyed taking part in County events, such as the Rainbows Christmas disco, the Brownies fantastic day at Tanfield Railway and the Guides day at Lightwater Valley. Despite the rain, all hailed the County campfire evenings, a great success!

As well as going out and about, the girls have welcomed a range of visitors to their unit meetings, including a cheerleading instructor, the Cullercoats Cloggies and beauty experts. Parents and families have also been welcomed into units, with a Guide pantomime; a Brownie talent show and a family quiz night.

As leaders we enjoyed an afternoon tea at Jesmond Dene house, to celebrate the retirement of one of our longest serving leaders, Margaret Armstrong. We’re now all looking forward to celebrating the Big Brownie Birthday in 2014! Sally Wright

TYNEMOUTH DIVISION REPORT It does not seem a year ago since I was writing the 2012 report, due to the packed programme of events in 2013. Tynemouth retained all 19 units. However it is sad to report, that our Ranger unit will close in January, due to work and home commitments of our Ranger guiders. My thanks to Fiona Gibson and Lindsay Wilkinson, for the excellent work and commitment they have given to the Ranger Unit. I am always excited to hear what Rainbows have been up to. Units held parties to celebrate nearly anything and everything. Events included, pizzas to Cup Cakes; planting bulbs; a Pyjama Party; putting on a show for parents; an Easter Bunny Disco; a Torch night; Sleepovers and visits from both the Fire Dept, & Dogs for the Blind. All Rainbow units spent a lovely sunny day at the Division Teddy Bear’s Picnic at Plessey Woods. At County level, the very noisy Christmas Disco at The Parks, was also a hit with the Rainbows. Brownies amaze me by some of the activities they get up to. It was a “Badge Mad” year with badges ranging from Entertainer to Environment & Cook to Computers, Centre For Life Ice Skating proved very popular; Theme evenings; the Pantomime; bike rides and the best venture of all - Sleepovers and Pack Holidays. Most units opted to support the County event at Tanfield Railway, which was a fantastic day in every way. Guide activities never cease to surprise me. Movie making!!; song writing; ‘Ready Steady Cook’ competitions; Halloween and Divali nights; archery; golf and the very popular Big Gig. Badges are becoming more popular – one unit completed the World Travel badge and are pen pals with a guide unit in Long Island in USA; the Community Badge was attained by litter picking, raising money

for street pastors in Whitley Bay, making sweets and singing at 2 Residential Homes. This work has been entered for the President Challenge. Sleepovers and Indoor Holidays have been well attended, with one unit and 7 guiders attending ‘Giggles’ International Camp in Yorkshire. The County Camp at Plessey Woods gave many guides their first taste of camping and unusual activities, a big thanks to Lauren Stead and her team, for a very successful event. The Guide year ended with a bang; fireworks at the County trip to Lightwater Valley, which was a huge success and another trip has already been requested. It is unbelievable what our Rangers fit into one year; talks on “Self Esteem and Pilates”; a Bagel Night, Zumba session, Burns Supper (with Haggis), American theme night, Pizza Night; visits to the Centre For Life & RNLI; a trip to Durham and York; celebrating the Chinese New Year; ice skating; Pitch and Putt; a Yo-Sushi workshop; celebrating at the Tyneside Cinema, where they chose their own film to watch. The highlight of 2013 was a 2-week trip to Alberta, Canada for 10 girls and 2 leaders, their programme was fantastic and something the girls will remember forever. In this report I have expressed excitement, amazement, surprise and disbelief at all that has gone on in 2013 and I have no doubt I will feel the same in 2014, due to the wonderful team of Tynemouth guiders who “make it happen” for our girls and to them I am eternally grateful. Congratulations and well done to you all. Val Laverty

WALLSEND DIVISION REPORT This has been a busy year for Wallsend. We said goodbye and a big ‘thank you’ to Joyce Shieber for being our Division Commissioner and we welcomed Pam Heron, who has taken on this role. Three guiders retired, all having given many good years to Girlguiding. We held an awards evening, which also included ‘most glamorous guider’ to Asha Sood. We also congratulate Margaret Heron on receiving the Laurel award from the County.

Brownies had a lovely time visiting Butterfly World, while working towards their Wildlife badge.

Brownies have been busy working for Designer, Stargazer, Friend to Animals, Safety in the Home, Booklover, Cook, Seasons and Cupcake Challenge badges, keeping them busy. Brownies gained their Computer badges by designing their own website; learned about Makaton; celebrated Scotland, had a teddy bear picnic and raised money for Charlie Bear’s Cancer Research. Brownies watched the films Madagascar 3 & Despicable Me 2 and visited the police station.

Brownies built dens at Rising Sun and had a great time, decorated cakes Brownies and Rainbows enjoyed circus skills (gaining circus skills badge).

We all enjoyed the County Brownie trip to Tanfield and County Rainbow disco. We also held our own disco, which was organised by the Rangers.

Guides and Guiders enjoyed camping and a trip to France. They also learned what it was like to work on a production line. I was privileged to present Alex Phillips with her Baden Powell Award. She has also been selected to attend International camp next year.

WHITLEY BAY DIVISION REPORT After a very busy 2012, we had a quiet start to 2013, which then roared into action, quite literally, with some of the Brownie units undertaking the Zookeeper Challenge. Units have continued to run their meetings taking in all the challenges and activities that are available to us. All of the units of the 3rd Monkseaton collaborated on the ‘Girls in Action’ resource and the 8th Whitley Bay Brownies have had visits to both the Fire Station and the Lifeboat station this year.

As a Division, many of our units went on the Circus Skills Day, which was a fabulous event in the roaring sunshine. Lots of the girls attended the summer campfire evenings; however, the Brownie Guiders want to know why we had to endure torrential rain whilst the Rainbows and Guides had beautiful evenings? But with most events we cannot control the weather and it didn’t dampen our spirits. Our Rainbow units have had a busy year, with visits to the Sealife Centre and a Division trip to the Forbidden Corner with the Brownies. At Halloween we had our second annual Division Sleepover with a Pumpkin theme at the Quarry Centre and at Christmas a fabulous craft and games party. Our Brownie units had a great time at

Tanfield Railway, went on Pack holidays, visited The Forbidden Corner with the Rainbows and had a trip to Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens.

Our Rangers have been sailing, caving, walking and swimming. They had a Wii night, secret sleepover, first aid & fake wounds night, geo caching, crafts, cooking and went to Giggles camp. And finally, our Guide units have been involved in individual camps and sleepovers. In August the 10th Whitley Bay Guides had 7 fabulous days in Ardres, France where they had an action packed week and a trip to Disneyland Paris.

I would like to congratulate Suzanne Wood, on her 20 year long service award. Also, we said goodbye to Jessica Wragg, who left us due to work commitments and will be a great miss in the 10th Whitley Bay Guides.

A Message From Trefoil Guild All our activities have centred on the North East England President’s “7 T” s challenge, which the Guilds enjoyed. These have included Table games, Tartan Times, Tea Towels, Treasures (two minute talks by members), Tinsel Time, a visit to Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, Taylor’s crafts and Treasure hunt. At Tinsel Time, a Trinket Tree, later auctioned for charity, was decorated with handmade trinkets and baubles. We have had Theatre Trips (to Calendar Girls), a Travel Talk on Gambia from one of our GOLD guiders. Of course, we managed to include meals out, help out at Brownie Birthday events; “doing the coffees” at County Training days and four of us were at “GIGGLES”. As a County we had a coach trip to Keswick. To our great delight, Forest Hall Guild was resumed (after a 10 month break), by a lovely group of young guiders - we wish them well. I send my thanks to all in North East England and North Tyneside, who contributed to the success of this splendid year. Ella Baxter Chairman

Brownie Holiday/Sleepover/Camp & Rainbow Sleepover Report

I received applications for Rainbow, Brownie Sleepovers & Pack Holidays in the period January to December 2013. These events still rate top, as the best adventure a girl can experience. I am delighted to be able to give a report detailing all these exciting events.

Brownie Pack Holidays 282 Brownies (less than last year), have been on Pack Holiday to: Cheviot View; Moorhouse Adventure Centre, Durham; Wooler Youth Hostel; Netherud Pack Holiday House in Scotland; Gibside; Camp House at Spennymoor; Scout Centre at Barrasford; Minsteracres; Pasture House, Whittonstall; Church House at Seahouses; and the Stables at Wallington Hall. Brownie Sleepovers 134 Brownies slept over with their units. A huge increase compared to only 69 last year. Brownies Camping I wasn’t notified of any this year. Rainbow Sleepovers 94 Rainbows slept over.

‘Going Away with Guiding’ is a new Residential Qualification Scheme. Both this (detailing the modules) and the “Going Away With” Scheme book are available from the Depot. Anyone working on this qualification should now switch to this new version.

I now hand over the reins to Sharon Russell (North Shields Division), who has helped me in the past. My best wishes and thanks go to her. I hope she enjoys this role, even half as much as I have done, during the last 8 years.

We are very fortunate having leaders in North Tyneside, who are willing to organise these events, and to them, I would wish to say a huge thank you, to you all and well done. Val Laverty County Holiday Advisor

16

Guiding Development Report This will be my last report as Chair of Guiding Development, so I would like say a big thank you to Vivienne, who has supported me during her time as County Commissioner. County Training was again held in the Methodist Church. Thank you to the trainers who gave up their time. There have been numerous First Response full courses and re-certs, giving the Guiders a variety of days and times. Thanks to Norman and Helen for all their hard work delivering these courses. In June we had a few!!!! Brownies at Tanfield Railway. They enjoyed a train ride, an excellent puppet show, loads of crafts (thanks to Jan and Helen), tattoos, balloon bending and a chance to play on various bouncy things. All had a great time. July heralded a morning of circus skills workshops. This event was fully attended. My thanks to Liz Terry and her team for organising this event. On a cold rainy November day, 4 busloads of Guides descended on Lightwater Valley, for a fun day cumulating in a firework show. The weather didn’t dampen the girls’ fun. 206 Rainbows enjoyed a Christmas disco. Unfortunately I could not count and had to buy more selection boxes. Even then when I got back there were still not enough. Sorry to the rainbow who got a substitute. A big thank you to the couple that ran the disco. I started in this post when Ann Lilley was County Commissioner (Vivienne extended it to last as long as her post). I’ve enjoyed organising County events, seeing the pleasure the girls get. I have so many happy memories. I wish the next person who holds this post every success.Margaret Heron

Guide/Senior Section Outdoor Advisor Report

This past year many units have taken part in activities far and wide, to enjoy the outdoors to the maximum and I’m glad to have awarded more licences again this year to guiders wanting to further challenge themselves. Licences this year include: Louise Barnfather, Judith Lockhart, Grace Paul –guide holiday. Pauline Lloyd –overnight. Beth Dexter –guide camp.

The camping highlight of the year has been County Camp at Plessey Woods, where 100 guides took part in a survival themed weekend. International selection for guides and senior section was also held this weekend, when 4 girls were selected to attend North East England selection in September. From here 3 girls have been selected for exciting international trips; Alex Phillip, Wallsend, is heading to Norway whist Destiny Jensen, North Shields, and Charlotte Seeger, Whitley Bay, are off to the jamboree in Japan. Guides and Senior Section have travelled abroad again from our county. 2nd Battle Hill guides went on an Acorn Adventure trip to Ardres in France for a fun filled week of adventurous activities, whist Tynemouth Division Senior Section travelled far a field to Canada for 2 weeks in August. North Tyneside’s 40th Birthday Party This year North Tyneside celebrated 40 years as a County! So it was a great excuse to have a party with each Division helping with the catering. We invited past and present members. North Tyneside’s first County Secretary, Joan Newson cut our 40th birthday cake. During the party, North East England Chief Commissioner Hilary Cooper presented the Laurel Award to Margaret Heron who was joined by special family guests and Guiding friends from far and wide.
