Happy Spring Time!
I hope everyone’s lambing went well or is
going good. It has been a cold winter here. We
missed some of the snow which is all right with
me. I would like to thank Robbie for all he has
done to keep the Rambouillet Association on
track. Let’s make sure that all of us breeders
watch your “born on” date on the lambs.
Send in your entries for the 2017 National
Rambo Show.

Scott

Greetings from the office of the
ARSBA! 2017 is well underway, with
spring hopefully knocking on the
door. The last few weeks here have
been relatively mild, with some very
nice rainfall in certain areas. The
devastating wildfires were north of
us, and were extremely powerful.
The Texas shows are now in the
books for another year, and it was
an outstanding show season for the
Rambouillet breed down here, spe-
cifically when it comes to the Su-
preme Champion Drive. I once again
worked both the San Angelo and Hous-
ton Shows. It is really encouraging
and fun to be working the ring and
hear the comments from breeders and
exhibitors of other breeds of sheep
on how good the Rambouillet Show was
or how impressive a class was. That
all goes back to you, the producer,
and the quality of sheep that you
are producing for the show ring.
It’s a good feeling when the judge
comments on a class of 10 or 15 that
he could take any of these ewes
home, and they would make a great
addition to his or any other flock.
We are in the final stages of
getting everything lined up for the
2017 version of the National Ram-
bouillet Show & Sale in Gillette,
Wyoming. We have June 26-July 1 on
the calendar for our event, and we
expect it to be a great week in
Wyoming. The Ketterling Family has
been working hard on putting together an out-
standing week for you and your family. The host
hotel for this year’s event is the Arbuckle Lodge.
Their number as well as address and rate informa-
tion are located at the bottom of this column.
Their amenities are outstanding and it will be a
really nice location to serve as the headquarters
for this year’s show and sale.
The three ram tests are finishing up and the
respective field days and sales are in progress as
of this correspondence, with the exception of the
Texas A&M Ram Test, which has decided to go a dif-
ferent direction.
As of today, you may find all forms as well as
other pertinent information concerning this year’s
show and sale on the website. If you need addi-
tional information, always feel free to give me a
call or send me an email, and we will work dili-
gently to answer your questions. Please note that
there are some new rules implemented for the 2017
Show & Sale that apply to sale sheep as well as
Junior Show only sheep. Also, please review the
health requirements thoroughly.
I would like to say thank you for another good year
for the breed. However, I want to continue to chal-
lenge you to work very hard to create a superior
product that is beneficial for the entire sheep
industry. Remember, as a seedstock producer, you
are in the customer service industry. Let’s keep
our customers satisfied and happy in the product
you are selling to them.
That finishes up my ramblings for this issue I
believe. Thank you for all that you are doing as
members and producers to make our breed as strong
as possible. I encourage all of you to work hard
in continuing to promote and produce REGISTERED

Annual AgriLife ram test joins sheep, goat expo slated for Aug. 18-19

SAN ANGELO—Even after 70 years the annual Texas A&M AgriLife Ram Performance Test is not
averse to change, organizers said.
Instead of the traditional field day and sale of some of the top Rambouillet rams that successfully
completed the test, breeders this year opted to join the 2017 Texas Sheep and Goat Expo, a statewide industry
event now in its third year.
The expo, conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M AgriLife Research
and a number of industry partners, will be Aug. 18-19 in the Spur Arena on the San Angelo Fairgrounds,
4722 Grape Creek Road.
Dr. Dan Waldron, AgriLife Research geneticist at San Angelo and the test coordinator, said the sale of
the performance test rams will serve as the expo’s grand finale at 2 p.m. Aug. 19.
“The Rambouillet ram breeders with animals in the ram test decided to offer some of their rams for
sale at a new sale to be held at the popular Texas Sheep and Goat Expo,” Waldron said. “The animals being
offered represent the high end of the rams completing the test, so numbers are limited.”
Because there aren’t enough rams available for two sales, he said the traditional field day and sale of
performance-tested rams will not be held in 2017.
“The ram test cooperators have selected sheep based on performance records for years,” Waldron
said.
The improvement in growth rate and wool production have been documented and the information is available
at:http://sanangelo.tamu.edu/performance-tests/ram/.
“We are confident that this change in the sale will expose a different group of sheep producers to the
progress these breeders have made in selecting sheep with predictable performance,” Waldron said.

He said all the rams offered in the sale will have met the test’s performance standards and passed in-
spection by a breeders committee. The sale floor price has been set at $500 per head.
For more information on the ram sale, contact Waldron at 325-653-4576, [email protected], or Dr. Reid
Redden, AgriLife Extension state sheep and goat specialist at San Angelo, at 325-653-
4576, [email protected].
For more expo information, contact Marvin Ensor, AgriLife Extension state program leader for agriculture
and natural resources at San Angelo, 325-653-4576, [email protected].
