generous sponsorship.

Thank you to Frikkie Bouwer, Juan van der Linde and the staff of

Hi All

It is just the start of the South African Tri season and already we have had a number of world class events in

our own back garden! The standard of race organisation has certainly improved, but then again the entry fees

have also increased to the point where some European races have actually become cheaper, and here in SA

we earn Rands not Euros! I really do hope that our sport is not going to shut out a whole lot of talent simply

because athletes cannot afford to participate in races. I am also in the position of having to consider if I am

able to come up with the $780 licence fee that will allow me to race at Ironman South Africa this year….and

that is excluding the costs of travel, accommodation and food. I have to ask the question if this sport will be

dominated by those who can afford to participate not those with the most talent/ability?

Anyway, apart from that grunt and groan, my season so far has gotten off to a pretty good start, with a 3rd at

Trirock, then a 5th at the very competitive 5150 African Champs and a fantastic 2nd place this past weekend

at the 11 Global Tri at Sun City... http://www.carolinekoll.co.za/short-course-is-hard-racing-5150-and-11-

global/

Almost December folks... hang in there!

Run starts at 06:00. (Watch this space).

Reaper Runner by Zola Budd With the festive season soon approaching (and having the likes of Toy Runs and Christmas Runs coming up), I would love to dedicate my blog to the Reaper Runner. I believe all of us have had experiences with this gloomy figure, and will experience this dreaded Runner face-to-face in a battle over survival. Track runners will know this as the Bear Effect: Have you ever watched a middle distance track race and athletes just literally stop moving with 150m or less to go? Every step becomes a battle and you can just swear that the officials moved the finish line to well beyond the high jump? That is the dreaded Bear effect. We joked with each other as track runners that a Bear jumped on your back the last 200m. I will swear to my grave that this is not a myth but an experiential truth. By inductive reasoning I can clearly prove that these Bears do exist and thrive on running tracks. As I moved on to longer distances, the Bears seemed to be replaced by something even more grim: the feared Reaper Runner. I have met him often during races and he appears to have become my full time running partner. Friday morning, he diligently waited for me as I stepped outside for my early morning run. It was rather chilly and I did do a hard session the previous day, but I did not expect him to be so committed on a Friday! As I took my first step, I knew this was going to be one of "those" runs. I believe time warps when you have one of "those" days. It was painful just moving (let alone run), so I decided to do an out-and-back run so that I would be forced to do the full run and not chicken out and take a short-cut home. I daresay, even before I got close to the turning point, the Reaper Runner joined me with a jovial greeting and started to chat to me about the meaning of life. As I looked at my watch for the umpteenth time and realized I was caught in a warp, the Reaper Runner gently reminded me of the combined age of my legs (96!). By the time I got to the turning point I was so tired of his musings that I decided to run quicker to try and lose him. He waited for me with one km to go and cheered me on my last run to the house with an encouraging, "You really don't need to do this, you know... there are better things to do than running in the cold with sore legs and a dwindling ego". As I got back into the house and had my first cup of tea, all memories of the Dreaded Reaper Runner disappeared. The day turned sunny and warm and I slowly felt life return to my old legs. Although some of our runs might be stalked by images of our existential demise, running still brings joy, even if it is only a hot cup of tea on a cold morning. Keep Running Zola

Hi Linda, Some rather sad news. Andrew "Andy" Cain who was the second Boksburg member in the history of the club to achieve 20 Comrades marathons is battling cancer. (Antony "Bootlace" Lace was the first BAC member to achieve the double green). Many of the older members will remember Andy who in his own quiet way and distinctive running style was a very consistent and strong finisher over his 20 runs. He and his wife Shirley recently moved from their home in Libradene to Worcester in the Cape to be closer to their family. Andy at age 74 is now wheelchair bound as a result of treatment which has affected his legs. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Regards, Kevin Townsend.

SEIZE THE DAY ~ TEAM SEIZE Two months or so back I was approached by Sizwe Ndlovu to join in and run the Jozi South 21km at the Apartheid Museum this past Sunday 19th October. Knowing if all goes well, I would be at the event anyhow. So I agreed. Now many of you may be asking yourself who is Sizwe. He is one of the four Olympic Rowers that won Gold at the Olympics in London in 2012. Not knowing what this was all about I just knew I was meant to be at the race and was aware it would be for a “good cause”. The week prior to the event there was a lot of hype and tweets, media on Twitter with regards to # Team Seize and # Team Showbiz. I gathered there was some sort of fun competition and challenge on the day. The awareness around Sizwe running and Peace for SA. South Africa’s very own Peace Day is celebrated on the 21st September and part of the UN International Day of Peace and is a South African first. Sizwe’s Brand Manager Tsakane Ndubane, contacted me and asked that we build up a hype on Twitter with regards to our #Team Seize running this race. Attending regular road running races this was strange as it seemed the norm to me to go to a road race. So we all emerged on the Apartheid Museum / Golf Reef City to run Jozi South and met our fellow team members.

On arriving I got to meet Tsakane who was co-ordinating the competition and our team. I met our fellow team “running” members that formed #Team Seize. Sizwe Ndlovu (Olympic Gold Medalist), Neo Mothiba (SA National Basketball Team Captain) and other members of our Team, Zithande Sithole, Greg Arthur and the legendary @theAngryKenyan. The challenge turned out to be # Team Seize taking on # Team Showbiz who consisted of celebrities as the likes of Miss Earth, Cito Otto (Frontman for Wonderboom), Eloise Cupido (Actress, TV presenter), Eden Classens (SA Actor & Model). It was explained, the first home in the 10km and the first home in the 21km would comprise a Team Win. Tames Times the media partner was covering the event. #TEAM SEIZE BELOW

Sizwe on my right (ie Jillian in the Boksburg Kit) and the small man in the middle is Neo. The 6ft7 Basketball player, Tsakane on Neo’s left and our other runners. The race was on….. Fortunately # Team Seize won the race. As Sizwe came in over the 10km distance in a great time of 40mins and I completed the 21km in 1h38. # Team Showbiz were nowhere to be seen. ☺ and had no one running the 21km. So it was a clean sweep. ☺ #TEAM SEIZE WINNERS

I was fortunate to place 5th overall and 2nd in the Veteran Category. So as a team we all stayed on for Prize Giving which took place at Gold Reef City. As I have been very fortunate, blessed and privileged to have podiumed at races over the past year or so, placing 20th at Two Oceans 2014 and often Top Ten and Vet, at our local Gauteng races, it was nothing out of my comfort zone to attend a Prize Giving but a HUGE excitement and pride to my fellow team members. This day was one of the best and most humbling days of my life which started off, as meeting strangers via social media and within a few hours we left as friends. As ‘we’ as the normal or average public look up to our local Sporting Heros / Olympic Athletes, the role was in reverse as #Team Seize was so amazed at my performance. However, I was not there to perform for me but to represent our Team. They were so proud of me yet I was so humbled to still meet 2 top Sports men in SA. # Team Seize cannot wait for the next event.

Sizwe, Jillian and Neo. Sizwe, Tsakane and Neo. My lesson learnt from this is most definitely to SEIZE every day you come upon. It’s a gift. Jillian Sotto Corona
