MY ENTRY INTO BANGALORE MEDICAL COLLEGE ----Dr. M MOHAN KUMAR, 1981 Batch, Physician High Court & Karnataka Dispensary

In 1980 there were only 4 Govt Medical Colleges in the state, getting a merit seat in Govt medical college was tough task .As usual without any tuitions, I finished II years P.U.C in National College Basavangudi Bangalore without any forethought of becoming doctor or engineer .After II P.U.C results. I Applied for Medical College through director medical education and Engineering College through director of technical education and I received the interview letter for both and got a seat in KMC Mani pal and UVCE Bangalore respectively. Interview letter and selection orders are still with me & I have carefully preserved it for my memory. My father did trunk call in those days and enquired about fees in KMC Manipal. The college office told it as RS 10,000/- , As I was elder among 8 Children to my father who was a honest officer told me that he cannot invest RS 10,000 on me, as there are 7 other children to look after .I felt very bad as I missed Govt Medical college by a margin .If I had known earlier I would have put little more effort in PUC and got good marks. All my friends who were studying with me from 5th standard got Govt Medical College Seats I started pestering my father to join me to KMC Manipal, but he did not oblige .He joined me to UVCE for BE Civil Engineering by paying RS 50 fee. I was going to Engineering College by Wearing Khaki dress with T square feeling disappointed. My father who was director for Burean of Economics and statics department went and met then director of Medical education Dr. YP Rudrappa regarding transfer of my 1st year seat from KMC Mani pal to BMC Bangalore, due to my pressure. I was preparing for my Engineering Exams and one fine day, when I came from Engineering College in the afternoon to house I saw an ordinary post from DME which my mother gave in to me stating that some letter has come as she was illiterate I read in letter that you are selected to 1st year MBBS in BMC. I can’t imagine that day how happy. I was next day I went to lord venkateshwara temple with my father opposite to BMC, prayed lord venkateshwara our house diety and then went to BMC office and enquired about procedure for admission later I went UVCE ,took my original marks cards got admission to BMC in march 1981, 50 members odd batch which was sanction by Govt. As I had already completed 6months and got adjusted in Engineering, my friends felt bad as I am leaving the college. In BMC first day of college I once again went to lord venkateshwara temple and prayed for my success and entered the college. On first day I was very nervous and afraid of the atmosphere. I was made to stand in front of cadaver in Anatomy Dissection hall, where formalin odour caused me irritation and tears in my eyes, later on I purchased Apron, dissection set and bone set from privithi Book stores and my medical journey in BMC began Dr.Krishnaiah urs, Dr. T Rajeshwari were my teacher’s in Anatomy, Dr. Mukbool Ahmed, Dr. puttaraye, Dr. Nanjundaiah and Dr. Sharada were my Teacher’s in physiology Dr. Kantharaj was my Teacher in Biochemistry If I remember correctly long live BMC.
