Thane of Cawdor

• Unknowingly, Macbeth, the main character, becomes the Thane of Cawdor as a reward from King Duncan of Scotland for defeating the rebels

The Witches

• Macbeth and Banquo, Macbeth’s friend, meet three witches • The witches prophesize that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and King

of Scotland • The witches prophesize that Banquo will father a line of kings

You Don’t Say…

• Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, is told by Lord Ross, the King’s messenger that he is now Thane of Cawdor • Macbeth begins to believe that the witches can accurately prophesize

the future

The Letter

• Macbeth informs Lady Macbeth of everything through a letter • King Duncan decides to stay in Macbeth’s castle • The Macbeths plot the King’s demise

Macbeth Kills the King!

Macduff Arrives

• Macduff, the Thane of Fife, arrives at Macbeth’s castle calling for the King• The King’s death is discovered

The Aftermath

• The King’s guards are accused of the murder of the King• Lady Macbeth planted the knifes on them• Macbeth killed them to destroy evidence

• Malcolm and Donalbain, the sons of the King, flee to England and Ireland respectively

Banquo

• Banquo suspects that Macbeth orchestrated the death of King Duncan

Treachery

• Macbeth plots to kill Banquo and Fleance• He wants his children to inherit the throne, not Banquo’s • He sends two hired murderers and one of his own men to intercept the pair

on the road

It Is Done

• The murderers kill Banquo • Fleance manages to escape

The Coronation Feast

• Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo in his seat• Lady Macbeth and the rest of the guests think Macbeth has gone crazy • The feast ends early

Hecate

• The three witches from before meet with Hecate • They agree to include Hecate when Macbeth next comes to meet them

Another Plot?

• Lord Lennox and another Lord discuss how Macduff has fled to England possibly to raise an army against Macbeth
