“We cannot all do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

~ Mother Teresa.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Book of Sirach calls the people of the Old Testament to be generous with forgiveness. Even with those who are unjust. In this way one can expect forgiveness from God for their own offenses. The prophet points out that one should expect from the Lord the same measure of mercy and forgiveness they are willing to show. The lesson being taught includes remembering one’s own death and to be prepared to meet the Lord having obeyed the commandments regarding love of God and neighbor.

St. Paul in this small passage from his letter to the Romans wishes to make clear that we belong to the Lord whether in life or in death. He is the Master and we the servants. Christ’s death and resurrection illuminates for us the truth that He and He alone is Lord of all.

Matthew 18, verses 21-35 brings forth for us the reality that God will certainly judge us according to how we have treated others. The parable of the master and the servant offered by Jesus to Peter removes the limit on forgiveness. God is willing to forgive us whenever we sin, and in turn we are to deal with one another in the same manner. Forgiveness is not merely for those who deserve it but for anyone who seeks it.

Perhaps these lessons from the Sacred Scripture might give us pause to think of those who have wronged us and offer complete and total forgiveness. This means no conditions set and no punishment or retribution even if deserved. Forgiving in this way will mark us as true disciples of Jesus and merit for us the forgiveness we so often seek.

Peace,

Fr. Robert

“Care for the poor enriches us by setting us on apath of humility

and truth” – Pope Francis A special thank you goes to the Southeast Chapter of the Columbiettes for donating 35 back packs with supplies. The Southeast Chapter is a combination of many Columbiette organizations in our local area. Also, thanks goes to our parishioners for the many back packs we received last week. These back packs doubled our original count. They will all make a difference. Our next general meeting will be September 28 th at 7:30. New members are welcome. Our food pantry is well supplied thanks to your generosity. As the cooler weather begins soup is always needed. Please leave non-perishable food donations in baskets at the church entrances. Thanks! We are always looking for new ways to help those in need. NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE Dear OLV Family & Friends: My name is Sharyn Ross and I am writing to introduce myself as the new school nurse at Our Lady of Victories School. Many of you briefly met me out in front of the school on our exciting first day. I am so happy to be here and look forward to getting to know your children better as time goes on. A few things about myself: I grew up in a family of 8 and as the middle child of 6. I am married and have been blessed with 3 grown children and 4 beautiful granddaughters. Like you, I can think of nothing more important than the health of our children as they return to school. I absolutely love being a school nurse in a small community institution such as OLV. I approach my nursing practice with the attitude of, "what would I do if this were my grandchild? " Even further, I can assure you that your child's health and safety are my top priority. As far as my nursing background and education: I am a registered nurse with a Master's Degree in Health and Science from Clayton College. I began my nursing career in the same place life began for me, at Riverview Medical Center Red Bank, New Jersey. I have since held positions in Medical / Surgical Nursing, Pediatrics, Forensic Nursing, Community Health, and in teaching health education at Monmouth University and Brookdale Community College. In my free time, I enjoy hiking with my dog Leo, yoga, swimming, and playing the piano, (that is when I'm not babysitting for my grandchildren.) The greatest blessings in my life stem from a long and happy marriage to my husband Dean, good health, and a rewarding career in nursing. I would like to let all of you know that even though we can not meet personally in my office at this time, I look forward to doing so in the near future. Regardless, this is not a reason not to communicate anything you want me to know about your child. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or reach me on my office phone, 732-254-1676 ext. 302 during regular school hours. I am looking forward to a healthy and happy school year here at Our Lady of Victories School. Stay healthy and be safe. Sincerely, Sharyn Ross, RN
