Dr. Suzanne Guerin Herold lives in Florham Park with her husband, Dallas. She earned her Ph.D. in Liturgical Studies/Sacramental Theology from The Catholic University of America in 2016, and she holds a B.A. in Public Administration from La Salle University. Suzanne works for the Borough of Florham Park and is the Director of Faith Formation at the Church of the Holy Family. She and her family are active volunteers and work especially in promoting community events. She has served as an adjunct instructor for the Catholic University of America and lectured in churches around the diocese. Dr. Herold's research focuses on saints, relics, liturgical architecture, and how we express our faith in our worship space.

STEWARDSHIP

"God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving. If he gives us the gift of Christmas it is because we all have the ability to understand and receive it." Pope Francis As the holiday season draws near it is a wonderful time to reflect on all that God has given us and all that we in turn have given to others. This time of year is a wonderful time to see the impact of our giving of our time, talent and treasure. As we start our Thanksgiving and Christmas outreach efforts and the St. Vincent Martyr float rolls down Main Street in the Madison Christmas parade there are many opportunities to get involved in this season of giving. You will see updates on these and other events in our weekly bulletin as we move through the season of Advent through the wonderful liturgies and music at the Christmas services in our beautifully decorated church. The coming few weeks will be busy as always, the work of many of our ministries will be very visible, and we would like to thank all of you for everything you share during this holiday season and throughout the year to make St. Vincent Marty a stewardship parish for all. PASTORAL COUNCIL

Please be reminded that members of the Pastoral Council will be available after most weekend masses to answer your questions or address any issues or concerns you may have. There is also a suggestion box in the front lobby of our church should you prefer contacting us in writing. Should you choose to write a comment it would be most helpful if you would include your name so that we can contact you with a response. Among the topics which have been raised to date are items dealing with the new construction such as hooks in the restrooms, holy water fonts, the need for a water fountain, our Blessed Mother's statue, the church's layout in relation to young children, additional handicapped parking, and the use of bells. Parishioners talking before mass as a distraction to those wishing to quietly pray and the responsibilities of the Rosary Society have also been discussed. Starting a travel club, videotaping Father George's homilies, reducing the number of Eucharistic Ministers, reminding parishioners about our child friendly worship room, and letting people know about the advantage of donating stock have also been suggested. Many of these issues have already been acted upon while others are ongoing. Stay tuned!

PRAYER

ROSARY The Rosary is prayed every morning Monday - Saturday at 8:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 8:30 a.m. Let us continue this devotion to our Blessed Mother. Remember the Rosary Altar Society meets every 2nd Monday of the month.

WEEKLY HOLY HOUR AND DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET We are hosting a Holy Hour immediately after the Noon Mass each Thursday. During the Holy Hour we will recite the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and have some quiet time of reflection. All are welcome to share in this holy hour.

The Rosary Altar Society monthly meeting will take place on Monday, Nov. 13. The Rosary will be prayed at 7 PM in the Church followed by a meeting and refreshments in the Parish Center. Let us create a greater devotion to our Blessed Mother.

Mass. Lectionary based activity sheets are distributed to each child at the conclusion of the session. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 1 and 2 Registrations are a must. Please contact the Christian Formation Office for a form for level 1. The preschool Catechesis group will now be meeting in a school classroom at the 9:00 am mass, while Level 2 will meet bi-weekly in the rectory basement (simultaneously during the duration of the 9:00 am Mass). Ministry

Preparations are underway for our parish community’s Thanksgiving Outreach. As many of you know, our parish assembles and distributes baskets of food for the hungry and the needy here in Madison. Baskets are also sent to St. Agnes parish in Paterson as well as agencies in both Paterson and Newark. You can help in several ways.

Prepare a basket (a sturdy box or laundry basket makes a great basket) consisting of frozen turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, fresh fruits and vegetables, condiments and desserts – all of the “fixins” for a Thanksgiving dinner. Please pledge a basket by taking a tag from one of the baskets around the altar. Each tag represents a specific family or individual. Detailed instructions for the preparation of the basket will be printed in a future bulletin.

Four or five volunteers needed on Sunday, November 19 from 12:00 - 2:30 p.m. in the school gym to help construct boxes and prep for Monday.

Volunteer on Monday, November 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m., to help assemble, collect and prepare baskets for distribution. There is a particular need for men to help unload the many heavy items that are donated and will work in two shifts: 6:30 to 11 a.m. and 11:00 to 3:00 pm.

Volunteer to deliver baskets – locally – on Monday, November 20 between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. We can really use the assistance of the men of the parish for this. Please bring a flashlight!

Thanksgiving Basket Guidelines For those who are planning to prepare a basket of food to donate to those in need, there are a few guidelines to follow when putting it together. 1.) Please bring the basket to St. Vincent’s school gym on Monday, November 20 between 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. 2.) Choose a turkey or roasting chicken appropriate for the family you wish to feed:

1-2 people: a chicken or turkey breast or small turkey. 3-4 people: a turkey 12 – 15 lbs. 5-6 people: a turkey 16 – 18 lbs.

7 or more people: a turkey 19+ lbs.

3.) Make sure the bird is frozen and wrapped securely in newspaper and brown bag. This will keep the bird cold and prevent thawing. Important: Please write the turkey size on the outside of the brown bag. 4.) Include the “fixings” for a Thanksgiving Dinner – rolls, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, vegetables, gravy, nuts, pies (not frozen) and some festive candies. 5.) No frozen food, except the turkey, should be included in the box. No milk, butter or other dairy products that would spoil without refrigeration for several hours. 6.) No alcoholic beverages, please. 7.) Place heavier foods on the bottom and crushable items (desserts, pies, fruit, rolls, etc.) on top. 8.) Fresh fruits and vegetables are always welcome and appreciated. 9.) Mark the outside of the box/basket indicating the number of people it is designed to feed. A list of the contents of the box taped to the outside would also be appreciated.

HOPE HOUSE FOOD COLLECTION

Next weekend, November 18/19 we will have our monthly collection for Hope House, Dover. Your generous donation of canned goods, detergents, toiletry items and more will be helpful. With the holidays fast approaching there are many people who rely on Hope House. Please be as generous as your means permit to help those in need.

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

If Thanksgiving is right around the corner, then Christmas cannot be far behind. Work is underway for our annual Christmas outreach. Each year we have had a generous and warm response to the poor and struggling in our community, and throughout our Diocese. Because of the generosity of so many of you, we are able to bring some of Christ’s light into the lives of many. There are a variety of ways that you can participate if you are interested. - Giving Tree: A Christmas tree will be in the church vestibule with gift requests on it beginning Thanksgiving weekend. Anyone interested can take a tag, purchase the gift requested and return it, wrapped and with the tag attached by December 10. These gifts go to local families, to Diocesan or county agencies and to poor parishes. - Adoption: If you wish to consider anonymously “adopting” a family or individuals to give them a special Christmas, please call. The family or individual’s needs/requests, and instructions for drop off will be forwarded to you. - Donations: Food cards or financial donations are always welcome. La liturgia de este domingo, intenta

marcar la pauta de lo que es la apertura

al último destino del hombre y de la vida.

Efectivamente, sin la sabiduría, que es la

esencia de lo bueno, de la felicidad, de lo

ético y estético, la vida perdería su

hermosura y su dimensión escatológica.

Por ello, ser sabio, en la Biblia, no es

estudiar una carrera para aprender

muchas cosas; no es cuestión de

cantidad, sino de calidad; es descubrir

constantemente la dimensión más

profunda de nosotros mismo y de Dios.

Para los hebreos, los enemigos de la fe

en Dios no eran el escepticismo ni la

incredulidad sino la adoración a los

dioses paganos, meros productos de la

imaginación humana descarriada.

Segunda Lectura: 1Tes. 4, 13-18

San Pablo en uno de los textos más

conocidos de su carta I a a los

Tesalonicenses establece unas analogías,

aproximaciones que se imaginaba, sobre

la suerte de los que habían muerto y qué

sería de ellos cuando llegara el fin del

mundo. Cuando Timoteo llega a Corinto,

donde está Pablo, con algunos

acompañantes de la comunidad de

Tesalónica, le plantean la dificultad que

tienen de que algunos de los suyos, que

han muerto, puedan quedan

"desposeídos" de la gloria y la felicidad

de Dios en la llegada de la "parusía". Es

decir, si los muertos resucitarán para

gozar de esta felicidad. Pablo lo apoya

como "Palabra de Dios".

Evangelio: San Mateo 25, 1-13

El evangelio, texto exclusivo de Mateo,

nos propone la parábola de las vírgenes

necias y las prudentes. La iglesia

primitiva ha alegorizado, sin duda, la

propuesta de Jesús en razón

precisamente de la "parusía" que no

llegaba, pero que podía llegar en

cualquier momento. a diez vírgenes son

representación de una comunidad, de la

comunidad cristiana. ¿Habría aceite en

las lámparas para ese momento? En

definitiva ¿habría sabiduría) Así es como

se enlaza con el sentido de la primera

lectura, que como dijimos, marca la

pauta de la liturgia de hoy. Sabernos que

esta es una parábola de "crisis", no para

atemorizar; sino para mantener abierta

la esperanza a esa dimensión tan

importante de la vida.

El Año de la Sagrada Escritura

Continuamos celebrando el Año de la Sagrada Escritura como comunidad hispana de nuestra Parroquia San Vicente Mártir. Cada semana, las familias reciben/toman un versículo para leerlo en casa durante la semana. El mes pasado estuvimos reflexionando sobre los salmos, oración que nace de lo más profundo del corazón del hombre y la mujer de Israel. Hoy nace de nuestros corazones al unirnos a una sola voz proclamándolos cada domingo en la celebración eucarística. Este mes de octubre, estaremos reflexionando el evangelio de Marcos, evangelio que estaremos escuchando el próximo año litúrgico por venir. Marcos nos ayuda a volver a donde Jesús inició su misión. Continuaremos reflexionando más adelante acerca de este gran Evangelio.

PARA TENER EN CUENTA… AÑO DE LA SAGRADA ESCRITURA

A partir del otro mes de Septiembre 2017 hasta agosto del

próximo año 2018 estaremos celebrando como comunidad

hispana el Año de la Sagrada Escrituras. A partir de

Septiembre hasta Agosto una vez por mes tendremos un

encuentro donde aprenderemos mucho de la palabra de

Dios. Si usted está interesado por favor puede hablar con

el padre Darwin Lastra al comienzo al final de la Misa.

Cada persona que asista a las charlas se le entregara una

Biblia.

Talentos…

Dios nos ha dado a cada uno de nosotros muchos talentos.

Por lo tanto, hay que ponerlos al servicio, si usted es

bueno en lectura puede unirse al grupo de lectores de

nuestra parroquia; tendríamos una práctica; si está

interesado por favor llamar al Padre Darwin al 973-377-

4000 ext. 102 o ver antes o después de la Eucaristía.

Faith Direct

Con la llegada del Otoño, me gustaría invitarlos a unirse

con Faith Direct, el programa de donaciones electrónicas

de nuestra parroquia. Nuestras listas de que hacer pueden

ser largas durante esta temporada, pero el programa de

donaciones electrónicas les dará una cosa menos para

recordar cada semana –no mas sobres para encontrar

antes de ir a misa.

Thanksgiving outreach

El próximo mes celebraremos una vez más el día de acción
