Dear Parishioners An anonymous parishioner provides the parish with "The Little Book" for Advent and Christmas seasons and again at Lent and Easter. Her purpose is to make available a short series of reflections for those seasons. Last weekend the Advent/Christmas Book concluded with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. As part of the reflection for that day, the editor, Catherine Haven, included a prayerful reflection entitled "Prophets of A Future Not Our Own". This reflection, as many of the others in the series, was originally composed by the late auxiliary Bishop of Saginaw, Kenneth Untener (1937-2004). I include this prayer in today's column because it speaks very clearly about our role in the ongoing mystery of redemption. It is particularly relevant to parish organizations, societies and movements. We have used it to begin recent staff and Parish Council Meetings.

"Prophets of a Future Not our Own"

It helps now and then to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts.

it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work.

Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us.

No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith.

No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness.

No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and objectives include everything.

This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing

that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development.

We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense

of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and do it very well.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way,

an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference

between the Master Builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers not messiahs.

We are prophets of a future not our own.

My thanks to the late Bishop Untener and the good folks who publish Little Books. They may be contacted at Little Books of the Diocese of Saginaw, Inc., P.O. SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT de PAUL GIVES BACK

Our Lady of Mercy will share in the profits. For each donated car, truck or van, running or not, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will give back to our parish $50/$100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of. Our Lady of Mercy Parish received several hundred dollars last year because of the kind-ness of those who contributed their old car to the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Thank you for your participation, and please continue to spread the word. Call St. Vincent de Paul at (718)491-2525.

WEEKLY OFFERING ENVELOPES

Please remember to mark the amount of your offering on the front of the envelope. Since the envelopes are used to rec-ord your offering after the donation is removed, it is neces-sary that the amount be written on the front Thank you.
