School Community Meeting Thank you to the many parents who attended the School Community meeting last week. Our Director Sue Lowe spoke about the value of “care”. Ms Lowe appreciated the care you had taken by taking time to come and ask questions that were important to you as a community. I would also like to personally thank Director Sue Lowe and Principal School Leadership Officer, Ms Anne-Maree Gill for coming to support our school community. During the evening we shared our school plan and an overview of the improvements we have made. We appreciate the ideas that you contributed about building on the strengths of Billabong High School and what you would like to see in the next twelve months. Our community and engagement team are reviewing your responses for feedback at our next P&C meeting. National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence On Friday our students actively supported this day by supporting “Dolly’s Dream”. I was impressed by the way our students addressed this serious issue through working collectively Page 1 as a school community. Years 7 and 8 had the opportunity to discuss a range of situations where they may experience conflict or bullying and how they could respond to it. It was pleasing to hear students in their discussions standing up for relationships based on trust and care. We will continue to encourage students to acknowledge the values, opinions and attitudes of different groups and compare them to their own points of view in a respectful manner. Today I spoke to students about the act of terrorism that took place in Christchurch on Friday. Many people in our school community will experience strong emotional reactions to this event over the next few days or weeks. School counselling staff are available to support students. If students would like to speak with someone anonymously confidential sources of support are: •Kids Helpline (1800 551 800 or www.kidshelp. com.au) •Headspace (1800 650 890 or www. eheadspace.org.au ) Relieving Principal Anti Bullying Workshop Monday, 18 March 2019 Term 1 Week 8A BILLABONG HIGHLIGHTS

This week our Year 10 students will be participating in Career Interviews. This is an exciting time to start thinking about possible futures with your children. I encourage you to continue the conversations at home. Some students will have very clear ideas about their futures and others will only be just beginning to start thinking about it. Having a clear goal helps students to stay focused on their studies and achievements. Most students will change their minds a few times over the next few years which is to be expected. Most employers agree that they want employees that can communicate and listen well, work as a team member, think critically and solve problems. Our students have the opportunities to learn and deepen these skills during Years 10, 11 and 12 across all subjects when they apply themselves consistently to their studies. If you have any questions that you would like to discuss regarding these conversations, please contact us at school. Mrs Ruth Winfield Relieving Principal Attendance Attendance has been very positive in all year

Year 12 Careers On Thursday, 14 March a representative from CSU came to our school to speak to all Year 12 about their future planning and options upon leaving school. This year will slip away very quickly for Year 12, and I would encourage them to spend some time now, thinking and putting some plans in place. Mrs Toogood Big Day ITOn Wednesday, 13 March students interested in the IT (Information and Technology) sector travelled with Mrs Toogood to CSU Wagga to participate in a day all about careers. Nine enthusiastic presenters from various sectors of this industry spoke, including Dr Tim Kitchen from Adobe to encourage students to be creative, become lifelong learners, and to prepare for their future. Other speakers encouraged aspirations; spoke of opportunities in networking; startup businesses (entrepreneurial skills); and the importance of taking opportunities while young to learn as many new skills as possible. Thank you to CSU for covering our costs for this excursion. Wongkumarra Artist, Tyronne Hoerler Tyronne Hoerler, a Wongkumarra artist has

started working with some of our students on an Aboriginal dot painting that represents Billabong High School as the main meeting place, with the rural towns surrounding it. Dolly’s DreamThanks to all of the students and staff who participated in the ‘Wear it Blue for Dolly’s Dream’ last Friday. As a school community we raised $298 which will be forwarded as a donation to this very worthwhile cause.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Year 7 and 8 students participated in an Anti Bullying Workshop on Friday morning. This was our first junior workshop for the year and there are more sessions to come. The students took away some further understanding of what bullying is and the different forms that it can take. They also looked at how we can stand together as a community to prevent bullying and support those who experience this kind of behaviour. Later this week we will call for some volunteers from Years 7 and 8 to act as anti bullying Ambassadors in the junior school. These students will be given training and support in order to perform these rolls successfully with their peer groups.
