HEADERSUC Santa Barbara Breaks ThroughUC Santa Barbara broke a six-game winless streak to start the season with an impressive triumph over No. 14/9 Pacific to become the latest Big West team to enter the win column.

The Gauchos had not gone winless in any six-game period during the Tim Vom Steeg era, and had not experienced such a drought since beginning the 1998 season 0-8. UCSB looks to build momentum heading into the upcoming conference schedule, hosting Portland Saturday.

UC Riverside Seeks Win ColumnUC Riverside remains the only Big West team without a win. The Highlanders are off to an 0-6-0 start, although four of those losses have been by just one goal. UCR has lost a school Division I record 12 straight games dating back to last season. The Highlanders seek to dent the win column in their final non-conference tilt on Sunday at Loyola Marymount.

Ranked Wins AccumulateUC Santa Barbara’s win over No. 14/9 Pacific was the fourth over a top-25 opponent this season. CSUN and UC Irvine both defeated No. 9 Denver earlier this season. The Matadors also own a win over then-No. 14 Utah Valley.

Let The Duels Begin Eleven games are on tap this week, and eight of them are against the rival West Coast Conference. The two conferences have played 16 games against each other so far, and it’s as even as possibly can be at 7-7-2.

Sacramento State and UC Davis travel to Saint Mary’s, while UC Irvine and UC Riverside make visits to Loyola Marymount. Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara both host Portland. CSUN also treks to San Diego and UC Irvine hosts San Francisco.

Del Curto On Cusp Of MilestoneSacramento State senior goalkeeper James Del Curto is on the doorstep of a milestone. He has 197 career saves, three away from becoming just the fifth player in school history to accumulate 200. Del Curto has played all 647 minutes in goal this season, and has helped the Hornets win three straight games. He won his 20th career game on Sunday when the Hornets defeated Northern Illinois, 4-3.

Lending An “Assist”UC Irvine is No. 8 nationally with 17 assists on 14 goals. The Anteaters have at least 10 more assists than every other Big West team with the exception of CSUN, which has 12. Eleven different Anteaters have recorded at least one assist, with Daniel Crisostomo’s four leading the team. UCI is also tied for the top spot in the Big West with 14 goals.

Usen Jr. Red HotCSUN senior Emmanuel Usen Jr. is tied for No. 13 in the country with a Big West leading five goals. He has scored at least one goal in three straight games, with a total of four in that span. The forward also owns a pair of assists to his stat line, giving him a conference-leading 12 points and putting him in a tie for No. 16 on the NCAA leaderboard.

Emmanuel Usen Jr. tallied two goals and an assist in a pair of CSUN victories to claim Big West Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The Matadors lengthened their winning streak to three after posting a 2-1 victory at home versus San Jose State before going on the road to double up Grand Canyon, 4-2.

Usen Jr. played a significant role in both wins. Tied at 1-1 against the Spartans, Usen Jr. provided the game-winning goal in the 68th minute when he scored on a header. It was his Big West leading third game-winner of the year.

The Matadors outclassed Grand Canyon in a high scoring affair thanks in large part to Usen Jr’s exploits. He lev-eled the score at 1-1, scoring off an assist from Jumoke Hutton for the second time that week. Usen Jr. took Hut-ton’s throw in and scored once again on a head for his conference-best fifth goal of the season.

The score was tied again at 2-2 late in the game when the Houston native delivered a low cross into the box, which Papi Diouf tapped in from eight yards out for the 3-2 lead. The game-winning helper marked the second assist of the year for Usen Jr.

For the week, he took six shots with three on frame. CSUN is now 5-2 on the year.

Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme shutout San Diego State behind three saves, notching Big West Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Boehme’s first career citation came after a 1-0 victory at San Diego State. The three saves cemented Boehme’s second straight shutout and pushed his streak without al-lowing a goal from open play to 286 minutes.

He produced his most important stop in the 84th minute as he dived right to parry an attempt by an Aztec forward, pre-serving Cal Poly’s 1-0 lead. Boehme, among the national leaders in saves per game (6.33), helped the Mustangs to their first non-conference road win since Sept. 27, 2015.

Throw InsNCAA TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS ON TAPBig West squads are taking on a challenging 2017 men’s soccer non-conference schedule, playing a total of 12 contests versus nine different opponents ranked in the top 25 of the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll.

The non-conference slate looks even more impressive when considering the total number of opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament last year. Big West squads are play-ing a total of 22 contests against 14 different opponents who participated in the 48-team NCAA Tournament bracket.

Cal Poly has five NCAA Tourney foes on that list, including traditional powerhouses Indiana, Notre Dame and Maryland. UC Santa Barbara plays four of those teams, with heavyweight Akron among the battles. Cal State Fullerton faces a quartet of postseason participants – highly ranked Clemson the most prominent of them. CSUN and UC Irvine have three NCAA foes on their slates, including common opponents in New Mexico and Denver. The Anteaters also have a date with top-10 foe Louisville, while the Matadors are the lone Big West team to take on UCLA this year. All eight Big West squads play at least one opponent that appeared in the NCAA Tournament field last year.
