6 2006 Memphis Soccer Media Guide

In 2006, Memphis will feature a roster of nine freshmen, 11 sophomores, fi ve juniors and one senior. But even with only one upperclassman, the Tigers boast a strong core of 13 returning letterwinners and six re-turning starters. The team’s sophomores and juniors gained valuable experience facing a diffi cult Confer-ence USA schedule in 2005, and four transfers appear ready to contribute. “You’re always learning in this sport,” head coach Richie Grant said. “Last year we had kind of an imbal-ance of a few senior players and a lot of young players. There really wasn’t anyone in between. But I think our freshman players gained a lot of valuable experience by fi ghting through a tough schedule last year, and that can only help them be more productive as sophomores this year. I’m also counting on some of our juniors who had success on the 2004 conference championship team. It’s very important that those lads draw on those expe-riences coming up this year. Overall, I feel we have a good core of players with a lot of experience coming into this season.”

After starting the 2005 season with four-consecu-tive wins, the Tigers lost four of their next six matches. However, Memphis was able to rebound from their mid-season struggles and advance to the conference tourna-ment semifi nals and an 8-8-2 record. The Tigers showed further progress during their 2006 spring schedule by posting a 4-2 record. Memphis lost to Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs Kansas City and FC Dallas, however the Tigers shut out all four am-atuer opponents including Irish teams Colaiste Ide and Portmarnock. The Tigers will have their work cut out for them once again as this year’s schedule promises strong op-position from conference rivals and non-conference na-tional powers. However, Grant’s goals remain the same. “We need to be competing to win the conference which means that we need to put ourselves in the con-ference tournament at the end of the year with a decent seed,” Grant said. “The second thing is that we want to give ourselves an opportunity to compete beyond the conference tournament. We can do that by staying com-petitive and getting enough wins on our schedule so the selection commitee takes notice, and I think we have a very good chance this year. We just need to win.”

COACHES

The entire coaching staff returns from 2005 as Grant begins his 12th season as a head coach and his eighth season at the helm of the Memphis men’s soc-cer program. The two-time C-USA Coach of the Year has guided the Tigers to a 69-53-8 record and a school record .561 winning percentage over the last seven sea-sons. Prior to joining the Tigers, Grant was the head coach at Lambuth University where he won three con-ference titles. In 11 seasons as a head coach, Grant owns a 122-82-10 record. Robert Nicholson rejoins the Tigers for his fourth

campaign as assistant coach and Remco de Jong returns to Memphis for his second year coaching the goalkeepers. “Each coach brings a tremendous amount to the program,” Grant said. “Their expertise and knowledge of all the different areas of the game is a great advantage to us. Robbie’s done a great job with the strength and conditioning program, and Remco has been wonderful with the goalkeepers. It’s good to know our players are in good hands with the coaching staff that we have.”

GOALKEEPERS

One of the most promising areas for the Tigers entering 2006 is in net. Junior Tyler Strom returns to Memphis after a break-through sophomore season. The 6-5 Strom took over the starting netminder’s role mid-way through the 2005 campaign and went on to record 75 saves on 92 shots over 11 games. His .815 save per-centage led all of Conference USA. Redshirt freshman Robert Mueller looked impres-sive during the spring, recording a 1-0 shutout against Coaliste Ide. The Killeen, Texas native received all-dis-trict honors all four years in high school. True freshman Michael Goodlett has also seen success at the high school level and should be available to step up if needed. “We’re looking for Tyler to continue where he left off last season,” Grant said. “He had some very strong performances for us. He’s very athletic and his game improved a lot last year. Tyler has to have a good season for us to do well. He knows that and he’s taken that seri-ously in his preparation for this year. “Michael (Goodlett) is very athletic and Robert (Mueller) got some good experience last spring, but we’re relying on Tyler to lead us.”

DEFENDERS

The Tiger defense will be one of the stronger units on Grant’s squad. Junior Michael Coburn will begin his third season as a starter. Jamie Gilbert, a transfer from Vanderbilt and the Tigers’ lone senior, will join Coburn in anchoring the backfi eld. Junior Adam Montgomery should see signifi cant time and provide additional leadership. Robert Sausa-mann has recovered from a spring shoulder injury and should contribute at fullback and provide much-needed depth and size. Sophomores Thomas Hyland, Frank Judice, and Tomo Koyano and freshman Rick Alleman should pro-

T he Memphis men’s soccer team looks to regain the form that led them to Conference USA regular season and tournament championships in 2004. To do so, the Tigers will rely on a

group of talented underclassmen to replace Columbus Crew draft pick Dayton O’Brien and D.C. United selection Andy Metcalf, as well as three other seniors who graduated after the 2005 campaign.

TIGERS AT A GLANCETIGERS AT A GLANCEvide the Tigers enough to offset the loss of All-Conference USA defender Gary Connolly, who graduated last year. “We feel we have six or seven defenders that could play for us across the back, and a lot of them can play multiple positions,” Grant said. “We think that we have enough experience and versatility that we can send out four very good defenders every game.”

MIDFIELDERS

The Tigers lost three important midfi elders in Ste-phen Cooling, Cormac McArdle, and 2005 All-Region selection Dayton O’Brien. However, Grant is confi dent that sophomore Tripp Harkins will be a leader in the Tiger midfi eld. Harkins, who was named to the 2005 C-USA All-Freshman team after recording 10 points (4 goals, 2 as-sists), will be joined by junior Kevin Walsh, a transfer from Christian Brothers University, and sophomore Shaun Goulding, a transfer from Lambuth University. Walsh and Goulding provide Grant with an attacking threat from midfi eld and should help create more scor-ing opportunities for the Tigers. Montgomery has shown versatility by playing midfi eld and defense in his fi rst two seasons. Montgom-ery and sophomore Jordan Lynn give the Tigers a defen-sive-minded presence at midfi eld. Providing additional depth at midfi eld will be red-shirt freshman Nick Dressman and sophomore Grant Wise. Both players impressed during spring play and could fi nd themselves playing multiple positions. Fresh-men Ben Nabers, Jonahan Romero, and Wade Wonderlin also provide additional competition for starting roles. “We have a lot of balance when it comes to the mid-fi eld,” Grant said. “We lost a lot from last year, but with the development that Tripp has shown us and the help that the transfers will give us, we should be in good shape.”

FORWARDS

The departure of Andy Metcalf, who fi nished second in the conference in goals (12) and points (29), creates a scoring void the Tigers must fi ll. Junior Jared Britcher has the most experience and could have a more prominent role up front after playing both midfi eld and defense in his fi rst two seasons at Memphis. Britcher, who fi nished seventh in the conference with 18 points and tallied seven goals in his sophomore campaign, brings experience and toughness to the forward position. The Knoxville, Tenn. native was partnered with sopho-more Kyle Minter last spring, and the two combined to give the Tigers a promising scoring threat. Memphis has a number of other intriguing options

at forward this year. Sophomores Patrick Elkins, Kyle Franklin (a transfer from South Carolina) and freshmen Brian Farrell and Joseph Skiff all have good goal scoring capabilities and could provide an immediate impact. “Up front we used a variety of players during the spring, because that was the position that opened up the most. We really wanted to fi nd the right group,” Grant said. “Jared has a lot of experience and he played a lot of forward in the spring, so he should be ready. We also have a lot of help coming in with the transfers and the freshmen. We should have a strong group up front.”

SCHEDULE

The Tigers will face demanding conference and non conference schedules in 2006 that include Clemson and SMU, two of last season’s NCAA Final Four teams, and Creigthon, a 2005 Elite Eight squad. Memphis will face plenty of challenges on the road, opening the sea-son at Louisville and taking a midseason trip to Colo-rado to face Denver and Air Force, a 10-time NCAA Tournament qualifi er. The Tiger schedule will also feature tough Confer-ence USA road matches. Memphis will open the confer-ence schedule by traveling to South Carolina, the defend-ing conference tournament champion. The Tigers must also face UCF, Florida International and Kentucky on the road. Fortunately for the Tigers, they will have the ben-efi t of home fi eld advantage during the season’s fi nal push for the conference title. The Tigers will try to de-fend their Memphis Diadora Tournament championship by hosting Clemson and Cal State Fullerton, and four of the Tigers’ fi nal six matches take place at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, where the Tigers went 5-2-1 in 2005. Creighton, as well as conference rivals Tulsa, UAB, SMU, and Marshall will all come to Mike Rose in the season’s second half. After playing fi ve of their fi nal seven games on the road last season, Grant is hoping his team can benefi t from facing top competition at home. “One of the things that made last season so tough was the fact that we had to go to places like SMU, Tulsa, UAB and Marshall. We had a lot of tough road games in our conference last year. Now we get to bring those teams here, and that really enhances our home sched-ule,” Grant said. “The conference is a wonderful part of the schedule, and what we’ve added to that is an even more competitive non-conference schedule. “The trips to Louisville, Denver and Air Force will be tough, and we hope to get some crowds out here when we bring in teams like Creighton, Clemson, and SMU. We’ll have a lot of entertaining futbol here this fall, and it should give us a really good chance to make a run for the NCAA Tournament.”

After fi nishing ninth two years in a row in Conference USA, the 36-year-old Dublin, Ireland, native guided the Tigers to their fi rst conference regular season and tournament titles in 2004. Grant brought the Memphis program to new heights, as the team fi nished with its most season victories ever with a 16-4-1 record and was the No. 11 most-im-proved team in the nation. The team’s .786 win-loss-tie percentage was ranked sixth in the nation. For only the second time in the pro-gram’s history, the Tigers earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The nation took notice as The Tigers climbed as high as No. 13 in the polls and ended the season ranked in the top 25 for the fi rst time in school history. The offense fl ourished once again in 2005 as Memphis reached the semifi nals of the C-USA Tournament. The Tigers led the conference and were third in the nation in goals per game (2.56), fi nished second in goals (46), assists (43) and points (135) in C-USA, and received recognition from the pro-fessional ranks as two seniors were drafted by Major League Soccer (MLS) franchises. Since Grant’s arrival in 1999, the Tigers’ offense has strengthened, fi nishing the sea-son ranked nationally in scoring four times

and setting school records for goals, assists and points in 2000. In 2004, Grant brought the team’s defense to new heights, fi nishing ninth in the nation in goals-against average and setting team records in goals against and goals-against average. The defense showed continued growth in 2005 as goaltender Tyler Strom recorded 75 saves on 92 shots to lead Conference USA in save percentage (.815). Grant has grown accustomed to winning and expects nothing less at Memphis. Grant has posted a 122-82-10 overall record (.593) through 11 seasons and has a 69-53-8 record (.562) in his seven years with the Tigers. Under Grant’s leadership, Memphis has eclipsed the 10-win mark three times and has fi nished with a record of .500 or better in four-consecutive years and fi ve of the last six seasons. After posting a 7-11 record in his fi rst year, Grant’s Tigers put up a 14-6 mark in 2000, doubling their win total from the previous season. As a result, Grant became the fi rst Tiger coach to earn Conference USA Coach of the Year honors, a feat he accom-plished for the second time in 2004. As a player, Grant was a three-time NAIA All-American defender and was twice named the NAIA District V Player of the Year at Green Mountain College in Poultney,

Remco de Jong rejoins the Memphis men’s soccer team for his second season as a goalkeeper coach. In

his fi rst season on the Tiger coaching staff, de Jong helped goalkeeper Tyler Strom de-velop into one of Conference USA’s best netminders. “Remco is a product of one of the best programs in the world, so he brings a great deal of expertise to that position,” head coach Richie Grant said. “He’s very com-mitted to improving our young keepers, and that’s something you saw last year with Ty-ler Strom’s development.” A native of Amsterdam, de Jong started playing soccer at Ajax in the Netherlands when he was 10-years-old. As a goalkeep-er with Ajax, he played with John van het Schip, Stanly Menzo, and Marco van Bas-

ten, who coached the Dutch National team to a Round of 16 appearance at the 2006 World Cup. de Jong’s U-18 team, coached by three-time European Cup champion Johan Cruyff, won the Netherlands National Champion-ship in 1981-82. His Ajax 3 team also won the national championship in 1985-86 and was a regional champion from 1985-88. In Holland, he coached the amateur club RKA-VIC from 1996-2000 and is currently in his sixth year of coaching goalkeepers for the West Tennessee Futbol Club Dragons. de Jong is married to Angela de Jong-Angelici, the executive producer of the Fox 13 morning show in Memphis. For four years, Dayton O’Brien and Andy Metcalf were the face of Mem-phis soccer. Metcalf fi nished third in school history in goals (39) and points (90), and O’Brien owns the school re-cords for single season assists (14) and career assists (34). In 2004, the two Ti-gers led Memphis to their fi rst regular season and Conference USA titles and their second ever NCAA Tournament berth. After another stellar season in 2005, it was only fi tting that the high scoring duo was given the opportunity to continue their careers when they were taken in the 2006 Major League Soccer drafts. On January 20, 2006, the Colum-bus Crew selected O’Brien with the 33rd overall pick in the MLS Super Draft. Six days later, D.C. United took Metcalf with the 19th overall pick in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Both players were sent to their club’s reserve rosters. O’Brien and Metcalf were the fi rst two former Tigers drafted by MLS teams and joined former Kansas City Wizards midfi elder Daniel Dobson as the only University of Memphis soccer products to be affi liated with an MLS team. O’Brien and Metcalf each saw playing time in exhibition matches in 2006, and Metcalf added another fi rst

for Memphis soccer when he became fi rst Tiger product to score an MLS goal. The Jackson, Tenn. native struck in a 4-0 exhibition upset against Celtic FC, the defending champions of the Scottish Premier League. “I’m really happy for Dayton and Andy. They worked very hard to get to where they are, and they deserve to be there,” head coach Richie Grant said. “What you see in a lot of our young players now is the desire to play beyond college, and Dayton and Andy showed them what they need to do to make that happen.

The University of Memphis men’s soccer program measured themselves against world class soccer talent last spring, and the Tigers proved to be up to the challenge. Memphis fi nished 4-2 on the spring, with all four wins coming via shutout. The only two Tiger losses came against Major League Soccer (MLS) opponents. More importantly, the Tigers saw new players contribute to the team’s success and create a build-ing block for the 2006 season. The Tigers opened the spring with a 2-0 loss to FC Dallas, which fi nished second in the MLS Western Division in 2005. The game saw impressive de-buts from Kevin Walsh, a transfer from Christian Brothers, and Jamie Gilbert, a transfer from Vanderbilt. Walsh had the Tigers best scoring opportunity, but was robbed of a goal by Dallas goalie Ray Burse. Meanwhile, Gilbert was instru-mental in limiting Dallas to two goals. Jared Britcher and Adam Montgom-ery each scored a goal to lead Memphis to a 2-0 win against Portmarnock FC, one of Ireland’s top amateur programs. Walsh and Kyle Minter showed the ability to attack the net by recording two shots each. Memphis collected the fi rst annual Tim McCage Cup with victories against

Christian Brothers University (1-0) and Lambuth University (3-0). Walsh broke through with his fi rst goal to de-feat Christian Brothers in overtime, and three freshmen (Grant Wise, Tripp Har-kins, and Patrick Elkins) provided the scoring against Lambuth. Redshirt freshman Robert Mueller led the Tigers to a 1-0 shutout victory against Irish amateur team Colaiste Ide. Wise scored in his second-straight game for Memphis to help the Tigers pick up the win. The Tigers closed the spring schedule the same way they opened it, against an MLS squad. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Kansas City Wizards picked up the 5-0 win. However, af-ter facing top professional and amateur talent, the Tigers have a lot to look for-ward to in 2006. “I really liked the way our players stacked up against those teams,” head coach Richie Grant said. “Opening up against Dallas and fi nishing against Kansas City really forced our players to focus and gave us a unique chal-lenge. We gave them the opportunity to face some really talented teams and we found out what we need to do to im-prove for this season.”

2005 REVIEW

Senior Dayton O’Brien headlined a strong returning class and was named fi rst team CSN preseason All-American, pre-season C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and a preseason Hermann Trophy candidate. O’Brien teamed with classmate Andy Metcalf and sophomore Jared Britcher to create a potent offensive attack. But, with a schedule that included peren-nial college soccer powers as well as a deep Conference USA schedule, Memphis faced fi erce competition in 2005. The Tigers proved they were up to the challenge by opening the season with a 4-0 record and climbing to No. 18 in the polls. Memphis outscored their opponents 20-3 in the season’s fi rst four games. With season-opening wins against Centenary and Oral Roberts, the host Tigers clinched their sec-ond Memphis Diadora Tournament champi-onship, and a 7-0 win against Alabama A&M stretched the Tigers’ home winning streak to 10 games, a school record. However, Memphis had trouble keeping up such a pace, and the newly-realigned C-USA was proving to be one of the toughest soccer conferences in the nation. The Tigers went 0-4-2 in their next six games, including

losses to No. 15 Creighton and NCAA run-ner-up SMU. “We had a really diffi cult schedule last year going to places like SMU, Tulsa, UAB and Marshall. Those were all very tough road games in our own conference,” head coach Richie Grant said. “The trip to Creigh-ton was particularly diffi cult, but I think our

players got some good experience because of the schedule we faced.” Memphis got back on track midseason. By tying No. 17 Tulsa and South Carolina, the eventual C-USA Tournament champion, the Tigers avoided dropping below the .500 mark and kept their conference tournament hopes alive. Hard fought victories over East Carolina (7-2), Kentucky (2-1), and Central Florida (3-0) down the stretch assured the Tigers of a C-USA Tournament berth despite heart-breaking losses to conference rivals UAB (2-1), Marshall (1-0 in the 89th minute) and Florida International (1-0 in overtime). In the opening round of the C-USA Tournament, sixth-seeded Memphis faced

After a 2004 campaign that included conference regular season and tournament titles, expectations were high for the Memphis men’s soccer program going into the 2005

season. The Tigers were ranked No. 27 in College Soccer News’ (CSN) Top 30 Preseason Poll and third in Conference USA’s pre-season coaches poll.

off against No. 3 seed UAB. The Tigers avenged their regular season loss to the Blaz-ers by pulling off the 2-1 upset. Freshman Tripp Harkins put the Tigers on the board with a goal in the 30th minute, and a UAB own goal in the 82nd minute put Memphis ahead for good. However, the Tigers’ defense of their C-USA Tournament title, as well as their 2005 season, would come to an end with a 2-1 semifi nal loss to South Carolina, which would later claim the conference tournament championship. Coach Grant’s Tigers fi nished 8-8-2. It marked the fourth-consecutive season and fi fth year in the last six that the Tigers fi n-ished .500 or better. Memphis once again proved worthy of national recognition as the Tigers’ 2.56 goals per game (46 goals in 18 team games) led the conference and was third in the nation. Memphis also fi nished second in the conference in goals (46), as-sists (43) and points (135). Seniors Dayton O’Brien and Andy Met-calf received the most prestigious honor as both were drafted by Major League Soccer (MLS) franchises. O’Brien was taken 33rd overall by the Columbus Crew in the MLS Super Draft, and Metcalf was selected by D.C. United in the second round of the MLS Supplemental Draft. O’Brien was named All-Conference USA for the second-straight year, fi nishing third in the conference with eight assists. The Memphis native was also named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-Midwest Region Sec-ond Team, marking his fourth consecutive regional team selection.

Metcalf fi nished fi rst or second in the conference in six major offensive catego-ries. The Jackson, Tenn. native was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 10, was awarded a place on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 fi rst team and was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. 2005 also provided the Tigers a glimpse of their future as a group of promising un-derclassmen provided strong performances. In his fi rst season as a starter, Jared Britcher recorded 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) and averaged 1.00 point per game. Both totals were good enough to tie him for seventh in the conference. Britcher’s two goals and one assist during the 2005 Memphis Diadora Tournament earned him Tournament MVP honors, Top Drawer Soccer Conference Per-former of the Week, and C-USA Offensive Player of the Week. Britcher also joined Metcalf on the CoSIDA Academic All-Dis-trict First Team and the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team. Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Strom pro-vided solid defense for the Tigers. After tak-ing over as the starter in net, Strom recorded 75 saves in 13 games to lead C-USA with a .815 save percentage. In his fi rst season with the Tigers, Tripp Harkins notched 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists) en route to being named to the C-USA All Freshman Team. Harkins showed an abil-ity to deliver in the clutch as two of his four goals were game-winners. The development shown by his underclassmen at the end of 2005 is one of the reasons Grant has high hopes for 2006. “We had a lot of young players last year. But we’re expecting the fi rst-year players who are now sophomores and the young sophomores that are now juniors to really carry the burden and responsibilities for the team in 2006,” Grant said.
