Satellite Navigation for bicyclists

• High demand in bicycle navigation following car navigation trend• Manufacturers like Garmin quoting big efforts• In the last years Garmin got several competitors (SatMap, Lowrance, Xplova, Magellan, Falk...) • More www-sites and portals offering their bicycling routes as GPS-data (“tracks”) to be downloaded (ADFC-Tourenportal)• Hard- and software not as easy as car navigation• Smartphones coming up, but are less suited for outdoor usage

New mapping project: OpenStreetMap • “Wiki”-project: everybody can help fulfilling the worldwide map• Free of licence fees (CCbySA)• can be used on GPS-devices as free maps• municipalities and entrepreneurs can add their hotels, their ways...• more detailed and actual than commercial navigation maps• very precise in big cities, lacking content in the countryside• Special edition “OpenCycleMap” with bicyle routes
