EPIC EDIBLE #1

Fresh Oysters from L’écaillerie and La Cabane à Huîtres1

Brothers Marc and Jean Nopal began L’écaillerie in the Biarritz Market or Les Halles when they were just 18 and 20 years old. Today, L’écaillerie is famous for its huîtres, or oysters, which are sourced from the Arcachon Basin, the oyster capital of France.

La Cabane à Huître—which means “the oysters’ chant”—is the Nopal brothers’ up-and-coming eatery just down the street. It’s another venue for showcasing the simple beauty of fresh, local seafood. Here, the oysters are the stars—just as they are in the market stall—but you’re sure to love every other delectable dish served.

If you’re looking for the comfort of an american-style bakery, the Milwaukee Café is the place to be. Owned and operated by Wendi and Emily Abeberry, the Milwaukee Café boasts homemade muffins, cookies, cheesecake, and more. While everything at the Milwaukee Café is incredible, the carrot cake in particular garnishes rave reviews as “the best ever.”

Because of its uniquely American flare, a lot of English-speaking tourists and locals hang out at the café, which has both a stall in the Biarritz market and a newly opened shop down the street. The Milwaukee Café is also the only place in town where you can order a coffee to go. Many of our guests make a daily pilgrimage here to get their morning caffeine fix.

Henriet is a chocolate lover’s dream! The chocolatier is infamous for its cocoa-laden confections and authentic Basque touron, a candy made from honey and almonds.

But if you really want to splurge, the best edible on Henriet’s menu is the raspberry tart. Made with fresh-picked raspberries, cream, and a buttery crust, the tart is sweet without being overly so. It’s the perfect finale to any meal.

Leave all your preconceptions about macaroons behind. These macarons are nothing like the American macaroon, and have a far more rustic and almondy taste than the much-celebrated Parisian macaron.

Adam has perfected its recipe over three centuries, and the result is a deliciously soft cookie that literally melts in your mouth. You won’t find any crazy colors or flavors here—the Adam macaron is perfect just the way it is.

EPIC EDIBLE #5

JaMBON DE BaYONNEfrom Pascal Manoux5

If charcuterie was an art, Jambon de Bayonne would be Pascal Manoux’s masterpiece. Flavored with locally-harvested sea salt, the Bayonne-style ham is arguably the best in France.

In addition to ham, Pascal Manoux offers chitterlings, chorizo, canned foie gras, confit, and more—all available in the Biarritz Market, a purveyor of regional foods within the Biarritz market.

Foie gras is beloved worldwide, but few people know that the delicacy is actually a regional specialty of southwest France. In fact, one of the most well-known purveyors of foie gras, Maison Paris, began over a century ago in a small town not too far from Biarritz called Chalosse before expanding to the rest of France.

In spite of its large following, Paris continues to sell all of its exceptional products at the Biarritz market. A bottle of wine, some foie gras from Paris, and freshly baked bread is all you need for an impromptu picnic on the beach.
