ASSOCIATION NEWS

Our meeting on 16th September was attended by 29

members and 3 visitors including Les MucKan from Fraser

Coast Regional Council. Apologies were received from 14

members. It is encouraging to see people interested in their

town’s development making the time to attend these

meetings.

Tennis Courts: Lighting and power have now been

connected to the courts and the shelter shed. The members

of the Tennis Court committee have done an admirable job

in getting these courts ready for the community’s use. To

celebrate the completion of the work a free sausage sizzle

and tennis night will be held at the courts on Saturday 10th

October from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm for the sausage sizzle

and 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm for the tennis courts. Drinks will

be available for purchase at a nominal cost.

Illegal Campers: The “Illegal Camping” signs have now

been erected. However, don’t ring the council at

weekends. They are unable to respond at weekends; but

they are moving to have two rangers working 7 days a

week soon. The only action taken, though, is a warning.

Boat Ramp: The Fraser Coast Regional Council and

Department of Transport are conducting a guide rails trial

at the ramp. Council has indicated that the guide rails are

to assist members of the public when they are reversing

down the ramp; also to stop build-up of sand and gravel on

the ramp.

Council will be reviewing all submissions received prior to

a similar installation planned for the River Heads boat

ramp. The review is scheduled for completion by 30

September 2009. Should anyone wish to comment on the

issue, written submissions can be made to Jamie Bunt,

Coastal Management Officer, Fraser Coast Regional

Council, PO Box 1943, Hervey Bay.

PLEASE DO NOT FISH FROM THE BOAT RAMPS – It is a

dangerous practice and we do not want someone injured.

Traviston Park: The picnic tables were removed as a

result of their deteriorated state and not meeting acceptable

standards for safety. There is a current program that tables

are being replaced one by one. The delays with the

playground equipment have occurred due to problems

seeking replacement parts. This is very close to

completion.

Retaining wall at Lions Park: Discussions have been

held with consulting engineers. The 2009-10 Budget has

allocated funds for contracting consulting engineers for

assessment and recommendations for repairs and upgrades.

Water Supply: Wide Bay Water has embarked on a

million dollar water re-use program involving the re-use of

wastewater to be recycled on a hardwood tree plantation to

be established at Dreamtime Avenue Farm. This involves

the construction of a 7km pipeline from the present

treatment plant to the farm.

Because the laying of the pipes is adjacent to the water

pipeline, WBW has reduced the pressure in the water main

to minimise the risk of a pipe bursting while this work is

carried out. That is why we have had poor water pressure

during the last couple of weeks.

Hall Cleaning: A reminder once again that if you would

This year is really flying with school holidays here

again. This means only 14 weeks to Christmas Day.

Crafts are going very well with many visitors

calling at our group on Monday morning on their

way home south.

Crafts: September – Lyn is teaching a class how to

make a bookmark with a difference.

October - Net Darning Embroidery will be

taught by Veronica M. This is a very interesting

craft and some of the finished articles will be

framed for a picture.

This year our Charity Fund-raiser will be “Turn on

the Tap” project. It is difficult to imagine life

without readily available clean water but in many

nations it’s not easy to turn on the tap. One child

dies every 20 seconds from diseases related to dirty

drinking water. By filling a 600ml bottle with $2

coins this will add up to as much as $600 which will

provide two small communities with one hand-dug

well fitted with a hand pump.

The ladies are still knitting for the AIDS babies.

The last garments were sent to Papua New Guinea

and Africa.

Come and join us on Monday morning – 9.00 –

11.30 – for a very enjoyable morning.

Alice and Joan.

Don’t Be DiscouragedAustralia is known as a ‘Nation of Knockers’ and, as such,

people are often reluctant to put forward new ideas or

inventions in fear of derision and so become discouraged

in the face of opposition.

Discouragement is a prime tool of the enemy and must be

resisted at all costs. God’s word has the incredible capacity

to be able to dismiss it in a moment if only we put it in our

heart and, as Joshua discovered, also in our mouth (Joshua

1.5).

If we put God’s word in both our heart and our mouth,

discouragement can never stay. God’s word is a living

word and we, as recipients of His grace, need to discover

this vital yet basic point again.

There is a simple rule of spiritual victory which will help

the life of any believer. “Stop studying the problem and

start studying the promises!” Direct your expectations,

your believing, your imagination in the things God has

said.

Do not settle for what man or even Satan may say to you or

about you. Settle only for the things that God plainly

declares to you personally and in His written word.

Stop studying the problem and start studying the promises.

Be encouraged by God and not discovered by the Enemy.

“Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world” (1

John 4.4). Pastor Geoff.

VALE CEDRIC GILLOWAY

Older residents will remember the friendly face of this former butcher of Burrum Heads who

passed away on 1 August 2009 aged 80.

Cedric was born in Kalbar, near Boonah, where he spent most of his early life, eventually

becoming a butcher who bought the shop where he was originally apprenticed. After a short

stint in the RAN when he met his wife, Marie in Melbourne, he returned to live in Kalbar

where he continued butchering.

In the ‘60’s they moved to Melbourne for a few years and then back to Brisbane where he worked at various

butcher shops including the meat department of a Coles supermarket.

In 1987 Cedric and Marie moved to Burrum Heads and shortly afterwards opened the Burrum Beef Boutique

where he could be his own boss again. They decided to retire for good at the end of 1995.

Following Marie’s death from pancreatic cancer in 1996, Cedric returned to Kalbar where Marie had been

interred and became involved in several community organisations. He eventually lost his eyesight and was

diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. He was laid to rest in Kalbar where he joins Marie.

Welcome to the holidaymakers visiting Burrum

Heads for the School holidays. We hope your stay is

enjoyable and safe.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP NEWSThe September meeting of the Burrum Heads

Friendship Group was held on Thursday 3rd

September. Barbara T and Jean catered for the

afternoon. We enjoyed a tasty smoko and Jean was

the lucky winner of the day’s raffle.

Dani Runnalls, who is the Manager of ‘Fraser Coast

regarding the services provided by her department.

She was well received and her presentation was

thoroughly enjoyed by those present.

Next month, Anne Lederhose will address the group

re natural therapies.

This get together is open to everyone. Should you

like to join our group, please phone Eadith on

The next get-together will be held on Thursday 1st

October at 2.30pm in the Burrum Heads Community

Hall. Lyn McC and Lyn B are our volunteer caterers

for the afternoon.

Admission is $4.50 to cover cost of the afternoon tea

and the hall hire.

Hazard reduction burning is still being conducted

throughout the North Coast Region in preparation for

a busy fire season for Rural Fire Service volunteers.

In the Maryborough area alone, more than 200

controlled burns have been conducted over the past

12 months.

All the local Hervey Bay brigades are well prepared

for the summer ahead, and it is good that most will

have a boost in crew numbers following a successful

state-wide recruiting effort.

The Maryborough District training teams have taken

these new recruits through the Fire-fighter Minimum

Skills program and to my knowledge, no candidates

were judged as being "not yet competent." The senior

team members in those brigades will further develop

the skills and knowledge base of each of our

'newbies' as they progress through their career as one

of the 44,000 Queensland Volunteer Rural Fire

Fighters.

Stay Safe. Ken Fardon.

By the time you are reading this article, we, the

Executive Committee, will have had a meeting with

the Fraser Coast Regional Council to discuss the

progress of our new shed. Fingers crossed that we

have a positive outcome. We have been working on

this project now for over 4 years and it would be

nice to have an end to it all.

We have to give the entire community a big pat on

the back and say ‘Thank You’ for all of your support

when it comes to our fund raising activities.

Without your help we could not even dream of

having a shed big enough to support the community

in a disaster.

Whilst talking about fund raising, I must say a

further big ‘Thank You’ to the Village Voices who

are holding an afternoon of fun, laughter and song

to raise money for our project. Why not come along,

enjoy the afternoon; have a cuppa and a piece of

cake. You won’t be disappointed. Starts 2pm on

who put their skills and their outrigger canoes to the

test in the waves at the river mouth. We joined

paddlers from Hervey Bay to Gladstone for the

annual "Spring Has Sprung Outrigger Surf Classic"

catching two to three metre waves on runs of up to

500 metres across the face of the entrance. One of our

juniors had eyes the size of fifty cent pieces when

two whales and a calf surfaced 20 metres from the

outrigger, and still had them when he shot down his

first wave sitting in the front of a six man canoe. Now

that's living!

We can't Guarantee that excitement every day but if

you want to try Outrigging.....Sundays 8 am ... Call

41295635, or 41295226 for more information.

Junior Outriggers: Saturdays 8.30 am, Wednesdays

4.15pm. Contact Julie Bray 41295711 for more

information.

Another month, another regatta, this time an OC1

event for juniors hosted by the Kai Puna Club in

Hervey Bay. Conditions were the worst encountered

so far with 20 knot northerlies blowing into the bay

whipping up confused seas and a nasty shore break.

Some of our juniors wisely elected not to compete,

but those who did performed well even though

capsizes were the order of the day. Grace Riley

continued her winning run, even after a capsize on

the run home, she quickly recovered to surf in to

victory in the girls U12 sprint. Matt Randall stayed

upright in the boys U14 sprint to claim a second, and

Jayden Kennedy survived the biggest set of waves to

finish third in the U12 boys sprint. My award

however, goes to Isaac Roberts who capsized five

times but wouldn’t give up, and recovered each time

to finally finish his race. That’s the spirit of

Outrigging.

All are eagerly looking forward to the Gubbi Gubbi

juniors only regatta in Mooloolaba over 26/28th

September. We are taking 14 juniors to this regatta

which will be contested both in the surf at

Mooloolaba and on the lake at Kawana, giving our

juniors a chance to use to advantage their Burrum

River training. You will see them practicing sprints,

turns and changeovers during the next week in

preparation for three days of competition. Looks like

another fun weekend coming up.

We finally have a charter coinciding with

favourable weather. The "Coast Wide" has just

returned from offshore Fraser Island. All members

caught a reasonable mixed bag, including:-Pearl

Perch, Red Throat, Snapper, Red Emperor, Gold

Spot Wrasse, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, Moses Perch,

and Hussar. Ron Underwood took the pool for the

best fish, a 4.5 kg Red Emperor. He also landed a

3kg Pearl Perch in his nice mixed bag. Mick

Saunders had the biggest fish of the trip, a 10.2kg

Cobia. He also had a 2.5kg Red Throat Emperor in

his bag.

Next Charter will be the "KJ" leaving Saturday

morning 19th Sept from Hervey Bay for a day

trip. The "Coastwide"out of Tin Can Bay will also

be heading offshore Fraser Island on the same day

for our "workers' trip which was previously

postponed. The "Nightbeat" out of Tin Can Bay is

booked for 28th, 29th, 30th Sept. Some berths are

still available.

Trip Captain Paul has been authorised to book 9 of

next years charters in advance to ensure more

weekend trips as they are usually heavily booked.

Paul will also book the "Venus II" out of

Bundaberg as a trip suitable/preferential for

couples out to the Musgrave Island area.

Club members have requested that we encourage

the use of private boats for fishing both in the river

and offshore. To this end it is proposed that the

third weekend weigh in for October, Sunday 18th

be followed by a lunch BYO/ BBQ possibly at the

Community Hall or Hotel BBQ area. A nomination

sheet will be posted on the club board at the Hotel,

and suitable trophies will be awarded for best

estuary fish and best reef species for the weekend.

If sufficient interest is shown this will become a

monthly or bi-monthly event.

We are sorry to lose our secretary Denise who has

resigned for personal reasons, and thank her for

doing an excellent job over the past six months. We

welcome Helen Shepherd who has kindly accepted

the appointment to secretary for the remainder of

the term.

The 2009 Christmas Party is set down for Sunday

6th December. Possibly under a Marquee at the

back of the hotel, and catered for by the hotel. To

be confirmed at the next meeting.

Next meeting will be on the 11th October.

Thank you Stan and Marlene for hosting the last

BBQ (and abundance of caramel tarts).

Next BBQ will be hosted by Alf and Rhonda

Stankevicius at 28 Orchid Drive, Burrum Heads.

BURRUM HEADS BLUE WATER BOAT CLUB

Spring has arrived but it

feels more like early

summer, and still the

winds persist to blow,

spoiling planned fishing

outings. This is the

period of change-over from winter species to

summer species in the Burrum river systems.

The good oil from Daryl from Burrum Traders is

that there are large lizards being caught off both

boat ramps, mackerel are hanging around the

markers and summer whiting are being taken off

sandbars in and around the islands. Don’t be the

catch of the day. Summer whiting do not have

black blotches on them and the minimum length is

23mm with a bag limit of 30.

The club’s fishing competition was held from

Friday 11th to Sunday 13

th September. Biggest bag

men’s was taken out by Paul Coleman with a

flathead weighing 2.4kg. The biggest bag ladies

went to Leanne Coleman with 1.43kg in mixed

fish. Paul Di’Cesare was rewarded with a prize for

a mackerel in the secret weight.

Ron Henderson also won with a flathead of

.846grams. The surprise draw went to Don McNeil

with a garfish.

Our next fishing competition will be 2nd, 3

rd and 4

th

October. Anyone wishing to become members of

our club, please join us at Lion’s Park on Sunday 4th

at approx. 4.30pm, or, alternatively, ring the

Secretary, Trevor Lock, on 4129 5101.

Good fishing, but remember – ‘limit your catch, not

catch your limit.’

Our coordinator, Sara, is having a hard

time health wise and has had another

spell in hospital. Ellen Higgins picked

up the reins of the group and has been

heading up the working bees. Ellen

hosted a frog identification session at

her home where members viewed a

powerpoint presentation of frogs and

listened to their calls.

Ellen was away for the working bee on September 16 where

seven keen volunteers pulled out more pesky Rhodes grass

and planted 30 new plants. The plants are swamp loving

species: Melaleuca thymifolia which grows to about 50 cm

and has lilac flowers and Melaleuca pachyphyllus (used to

be Callistemon Pachyphyllus but the botanical boffins have

changed all the Callistemon species to Melaleuca just to

keep us on our toes). Melaleuca pachyphyllus is a

bottlebrush that gets a bit over a metre high. It can have red

or green flowers. It grows in the swampy parts of the

National Park along the Burrum Heads Road. The plants put

on a beautiful display this year with masses of lime green

bottlebrush flowers. The variety we were supplied with was

the red variety. Maggie is going to pot some tube stuff on

for us and we will have another planting day next March/

April. We will see how these ones that we have put in cope

with the summer heat.

Cheelii Lagoon has been accepted as a Land for Wildlife

property and we have asked Council to erect the signs.

We are also going to put up signs notifying owners that this

is a Fraser Coast Regional Council Community Volunteer

natural areas project. It is illegal to cut down vegetation

around the lagoon. The Friends of Cheelii are very keen to

work with residents bordering the lagoon and have done a

major thinning out of paperbarks to provide waterviews and

also to allow the remaining paperbarks to become better

specimens. If you live there come out and see us during our

working bees as we are always interested in your views.

One resident inquired why it couldn't all be mown like the

public area with the formal gardens. The fact is that wildlife

cannot survive in mown areas - except for the aggressive

black and white birds such as magpies and ibis.

A frog would stand out like the proverbial and soon be taken

by a kookaburra. Most animals, especially ones that are

eaten by other animals, need cover and frogs need shallow

ephemeral pools to breed in with reeds to hide in and near

by bushes and grass to feed in.

If you wish to be involved, our working bees are the last

Wednesday of the month so the next one will be September

30 at 8 am, Ivor Curl Drive. Wear a hat and covered shoes

and bring a hoe or mattock. A chair is also handy because

we have a cuppa after our hard work.

If you have any questions please ring Ellen who lives at 66

Sunrise Crescent, Burrum Heads - Ph 4129 5883.
