Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2019 1 NEWSLETTER BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN THIS ISSUE Happy Easter, I hope that you had a lovely Easter with your family. I really enjoyed having that time with my family and my church to remember and celebrate what Jesus has done for us. The school holidays have provided students with a break and I am looking forward to their new learning this term. Term 2 moves into winter and so I would like to remind you that healthy routines, including, healthy food and regular bed times enable children to stay healthy during the colder months. Please consider your household routines and talk about the importance of them with your children. It is good for children to understand why these things are important in taking care of themselves. Tuesday night we held a session for parents about internet gaming and the challenges that we face in supporting our children to be healthy in this area too. We also have a new parenting course starting soon and would love for you to join us. It has a focus on 5-9 year old’s. Please refer to the information on page 6 for more details. We have our Year 6 and our Year 4 camps in Week 3. These will provide students with wonderful outdoor education experiences. Outdoor education enables a whole range of skills like problem solving, collaboration with others, and resilience. These opportunities also help students to build confidence and new experiences that will increase their understanding of the world. We also have NAPLAN for our Year 3 and Year 5 students in that same week. If you are concerned or have any questions regarding your child participating in NAPLAN, please make a time to speak with your class teacher. Our school photographs occur this term, they will be held on Thursday 30th May. Please make sure that you send your child in their correct winter uniform on that day. On Friday 7th June, we have a pupil free day. This is the Friday of the Queen’s birthday long weekend. Camp Australia OSHC will be available on this day for bookings. The building projects are both moving along with the large new building at the rear of the school taking shape. When you drive in the rear car park you will see the wonderful progress that is occurring. The new development of the area in front of the Performing Arts Centre is also starting to take shape and we look forward to being able to safely use this additional space during school times. We finish this term with our Year 4 and Year 5 students having swimming lessons. I know that there will be many wonderful opportunities for learning this term and look forward to celebrating with our students, their successes, their risk taking with others and their learning from failures. IN THIS ISSUE

Happy Easter, I hope that you had a lovely Easter with your family.

Tuesday night we held a session for parents about internet gaming and the challenges that we face

in supporting our children to be healthy in this area too.

All of these things help each of us

to grow and become the person that God has created us to be.

DEPUTY’S CORNERI trust everyone had a lovely break with their families over Easter long weekend and ANZAC day. It was terrific to see so many refreshed and happy faces of students ready and rearing to take on Term 2.

ParentingParenting comes with the myth that there is such a thing as a, “perfect parent”. It couldn’t be further from the truth. Parenting is a tough job with steep learning curves which come with on the job training! One thing that does remain true is that if we all come together, support and learn from one another, the job becomes less daunting.

Who’s In Charge? This term we have some awesome parenting workshops on site. This week alone we hosted a one day workshop of “Who’s in Charge”, presenting tips and helpful information for parents struggling with children who are violent. Sadly, statistics suggest that violence towards parents is on the rise, with 1 in 10 family violence incidents in Australia is perpetuated by an adolescent. (Moulds et al. 2016). Relationships Australia regularly host this 8-week long course. If you are interested in learning more about the course, or know of someone who might be interested, you can call Relationships Australia directly on 1300 364 277. Anyone in our Diverse Learning and Wellbeing team here at school can also provide further information. Feel free to drop in and have a chat, or call the school for more information.

UnpluggedOn Tuesday 30th of April, we hosted the parent workshop

“Unplugged” which dealt with gaming and internet addiction. It presented a number of helpful strategies and information to help support parents. If you were interested in this course but were unable to attend, the same workshop is being offered in this area and is free to attend. For further information, you can go to https://ucwb.org.au/child-and-family-services/copy-of-unplugged-internet-gaming-workshops/ or call Wesley Uniting directly at 08 8245 7100.

Toolbox Parenting GroupsOn Tuesdays between 9am – 11am starting on May 14th, Elise Ottens of our Diverse Learning and Wellbeing team, is hosting a 6-week course which aims to provide practical parenting strategies, inspiration and encouragement. If you have children aged between 5 – 9 years of age, this could be a terrific opportunity to meet other parents and inspire each other. For all information you can contact Elise Ottens by email ([email protected]) or call the school on 8283 0000.

Reception Reading WorkshopOn Tuesday May 7th (week 2) the Reception staff are inviting parents to attend a workshop designed to provide practical and fun strategies to help your child with their reading. It is an annual event and is a lot of fun. It will be held in the Library from 3.30pm-4.15pm. No prior bookings are necessary.

I wish you a wonderful week with your families.

God bless you,Deb Clifford
