MELTRIC’s Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles combine the safety and functionality of a switch with the con-venience of a plug and receptacle. They help airports and other aviation-related facilities ensure worker safety while also reducing equipment, maintenance downtime and labor costs. They are UL & CSA rated for motor circuit and branch circuit disconnect switching and meet code requirements for ‘line of sight’ disconnects. Switch-rated plugs & receptacles eliminate the need for expensive auxiliary disconnects and enable plug & play equipment changeouts.

Benefit from MELTRIC Switch-Rated Plugs, Receptacles & Electrical Connectors Throughout the Airport & Service Facilities
Key Application: Power Conversion Carts
MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs & receptacles are often used to connect portable power conversion carts in airports and hangars. Exposure to hazardous locations and related code requirements can be avoided by locating the male inlets on the carts above the hazardous classified areas (18 inches or higher). When implemented properly, airport technicians can easily make and break live electrical connections.
NFPA 513: The 18 Inch Rule
Article 513 of the NEC applies to buildings where aircraft might be serviced, repaired or stored, and to any area which has aircraft that contains Class I (flammable) liquids or Class II (combustible) liquids where temperatures are above the flash point of the liquids. NEC 513.3 states that any pit or depression below the level of the hangar floor is classified as a Class I, Division 1 or Zone 1 location. The entire hanger area are Class I, Division 2, or Zone 2 locations from ground level up to 18 inches above the floor.
MELTRIC Helps with NEC 513 Compliance
MELTRIC plugs & receptacles are used in airport hangars and other airport areas to connect portable power conversion carts and other equipment. The carts are energized by pulling the deenergized, cord-mounted female connector from the underground pit and connecting it to the male inlet on the power cart which must be located above the 18 inch hazardous location boundary. NEC 513 classifies hangar locations above 18 inches as non-hazardous. If the connection must be made in a Class 1, Division 2 or Zone 2 area, then MELTRIC DXN Series hazardous location devices may be used.
Disclaimer: The user is responsible for interpreting and following all national and local electrical codes. Consult NEC 513 for all code requirements in hangar areas. Consult the MELTRIC catalog for specific device ratings.
