Bag designDEDICATED TO THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN HOW TO DESIGN A COLLECTION OF BAGS IN A VERY SHORT TIME

Target studentsThis course is dedicated to:• those who want to work as bag designers in a brand or in a design studio and

choose such a short course because they already have a diploma in fashion design or because they are already working and have a limited time available

• those who are planning to launch their own brand of bags - even if they have no experience in the field - and want to learn the skills to design their products in a short time.

• those who own a bag company/factory/workshop – or wish to start one - and decide to complete their training after the 10-week course with a design class

Topics covered during this courseThe objective of the course is to immerse the participants in the creative process of creating a collection of bags.

MARKETING AND BRAND IDENTITYWho is your customer, which is the identity of the brand, these are all key elements to focus the design. Our teachers explain these topics starting from real and up-to-dated examples of contemporary brands through the analysis of catwalks, promotional campaigns, product design and retail stores. Each student is challenged to develop a design project starting from the identity of the brand, this project will be presented during the last day of the course.

FROM MERCHANDISING TO BAG DESIGNThe merchandising plan is a fundamental tool for the modern organizations to focus the creative ideas into a marketing and sales framework. Once a merchandising plan is prepared students are guided through the process that leads to bag design: • understand time and action calendar of a bag collection from design to

retail, different roles and functions involved in the process in more structured organizations

• focus your design idea and search for trend inspirations • build a bag line based on the framework of a merchandising plan

MATERIALS FOR BAG DESIGNMaterials and accessories play a fundamental role in the design of bags. For this reason, part of the course is dedicated to analyzing the materials available on the market. Whether for a start-up or for a company, it is important to understand how to interact with material suppliers, how to choose catalogue products or new collections and how to develop new materials together.

BAG SKETCHINGA designer needs to have unique ideas to differentiate his/her bags in today’s market, but it is also extremely important that the designer is able to express the creative ideas with a clear and understandable drawing. During this course we dedicate approximately 80 hours to design bags.At the beginning with pen and paper: the students design different styles of bags but also learn to design different types of accessories. Once the basics of traditional drawing by hand have been acquired, teachers move to the use of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. We have chosen these two softwares because they are still today the most used tools by bag designers. Students are amazed at what they can draw after these 80 hours. Even the participants with lower drawing abilities are able to create nice and proportioned bags designs thanks to the methods they have learned.

FINAL ASSESMENTEach student will present his/her draft collection to the entire class for a final evaluation. The draft prepared for the final presentation can then be used by the participants as their portfolio. The Arsutoria diploma is issued to those who successfully complete this final exam.

Additional notesIf you have time enough to stay in Arsutoria school for at least 14 weeks, we suggest taking this course after the 10-week class. The technical course supplies a great understanding of bags and this is a real value in design. Being technically skilled gives a designer a superior awareness and ability to interact with bag manufacturers.

If you take this course together with the 10-week pattern making you can pay a discounted rate of € 2700 (VAT exempt)

Students are required to bring their own laptop to better work on their final presentation. Licenses of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are available on the School computers.

Bag pattern making and prototypingTHIS 10-WEEK PATTERN MAKING COURSE IS THE FUNDAMENTAL PART OF OUR TRAINING IN THE BAG FIELD, WHICH WE RECOMMEND TO BOTH DESIGNERS AND TECHNICIANS

Target students

Our main objective is to train those who wish to work as pattern makers in bag factories. We teach them both the pattern making techniques and the basics on how to make the prototypes of the bags with the use of machinery. However, our students are not only future technicians, but also:• the new generations of company owners, who have often a background

in economics or marketing, and attend our school courses because of our reputation and to acquire technical expertise in a short period of time

• designers who wish to understand what happens “behind the scenes” when they send their design to the factories, those who recognize the value of having a common language with the technicians of the factories that produce their bags

• “makers”: those who want to start a prototyping/production workshop and want to learn how to make different types of bags

Topics covered during this coursePATTERN MAKING

The course takes in to account the technical making of 10 different bag constructions: t-gusset, bucket, Boston, briefcase gusset, box/saddle bag, strip, framed bag, triple bellows, t-short and darts, bag with pleats, Bugatti bag.

The complete set of the patterns in cardboard is prepared for each of these constructions, including the external and internal parts, reinforcements, linings and patterns for cutting. The sequence of the patterns worked has been studied to let students face an increasing complexity, while adding different elements and details of constructions.During the first week the teacher introduces students to the world of bags: names of the different styles of bags are explained together with a detailed explanation of how each construction is developed in production and which materials and components are used.It is important for the students to understand the differences between the three main types of constructions: those that start from the bottom, the gusset and from the face. In addition, they have to learn the various types of edge finishes: raw edge, folded, stitch & turn. We teach all these details with practical examples and making prototypes of each. In the beginning of the course students also start to practice in the use of the typical tools used by the pattern makers: cutter and cardboard.

PROTOTYPINGAbout 140 hours of the course are dedicated to prototyping. Among the 10 sets of patterns developed during the course, students – organized in teams - make four complete prototypes. The aim of the hours dedicated to prototyping is to train participants both in the manual operations and in the use of the machines. The sample room in the bag classroom is equipped with a splitting machine, a skiving machine, four arm sewing machines, a high column sewing machine, a vacuum bench for glue and a roughing machine. Being a sample room and not a factory for production, part of the operations such as edge painting is made with manual tools.During the hours dedicated to prototyping we have a second teacher that joins the class to teach the use of the sewing machines. For those who want to make more prototypes and spend more time practicing, we are launching a new 3-week “bag making” course in 2019. During this course, students make three more prototypes of bags, different from those made during the 10-week class.

KNOWLEDGE OF MATERIALSDuring the course the teachers organize lessons on different topics about materials and components:• leathers: how leathers are produced (students will also visit a tannery), which

animals are used, which finishes are available on the market and how to use the leather in production, how to evaluate the quality of the leather and how to cut the different patterns to have a better consumption while maintaining the look and the quality of the bag.

• reinforcements: fundamental component of the bags. During the course, students get a better understanding of the different types of reinforcements commonly used in bag making and they learn how to properly use them – cutting them in the right direction - in order to achieve the desired effect of stiffness or softness.

• metal components: we are convinced of the importance of accessories as distinctive elements of bags. During the course students learn the differences of using different materials to make the accessories, the galvanic process and the finishing available together with the range of costs.

In October, students visit Lineapelle, the most important international fair where suppliers of materials for shoes and bags exhibit their newest collections. At Lineapelle our students can search for materials, understand what is available on the market and build relationships with the most renown international suppliers.

FINAL ASSESMENTDuring the last two weeks each student is challenged to make the patterns and a sample of a bag – starting from a design that they make - without the support of the teachers. The quality of the bag made is part of the final evaluation of the course together with:• a written test with both multiple-answer and open questions• a practical exercise that is the making of the patterns of a design provided by

the teacher• a final interviewDuring the course few intermediate tests are made to assess the progress of each student. The result of these tests is part of the final evaluation too The Arsutoria diploma is issued to those who successfully complete this final exam.

MAKING COURSE

BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE

Bag making: tote, clutch and backpackTHREE WEEKS DEDICATED TO BAG PROTOTYPE MAKING TOGETHER WITH EXPERT ITALIAN TECHNICIANS

Target students The course is dedicated to:• pattern makers who want to practice the prototyping techniques of a bag and

learn how to use the machines• “Makers”, designers, craftsmen etc, passionate of hand-made who wish to learn

how to make bags Students walk away with all the patterns used and the three bags they have made during the course

Topics covered during this courseStudents receive the complete set of the paper patterns for each bag they have to make. At the end of the course they can keep the patterns. Students who wish to learn how to make the patterns can attend the 10-week pattern making course.

Students choose the materials among those available at the school and then they start using the gross patterns to cut materials, reinforcements and linings. With the help of teachers, they learn how to use the splitting machine, couple the materials with the right reinforcements using the water-based adhesives available in the sample room and then to trim the final parts of the bag using the net patterns.

First of all, students create the parts of each bag that then need to be finished on the edge with raw cut, folded or stitch and turn. Then they start stitching to obtain the semi-finished pieces: handles, top pieces, pockets sewn to the lining face, etc. Each student carries out his activities at the working desk to make the faces, the bottom, the gussets, the pockets, the linings, the handles, the shoulder etc.To complete the prototype each student must complete the assembly using the stitching machine stitching and by hand finishing. In particular, with learn how to work some details - such as hand sewn lock stitches – that are typical of high quality bags.

The final objective is to understand and experiment all the phases of the bag making that lead to the creation of bag with typical “made in Italy” quality

Modules

Additional notesWe have limited the number of seats in each class to 10 students because “making” requires a much closer interaction with the teachers.Students with a very limited time available can take only part of the course. This is subject to the number of seats available: preference will be given to those that take the entire course. The price of the single week is € 1500 (VAT exempt)
