Mooring Systems Limited (MSL) is apublic listed company based in NewZealand. The company specialises inthe design and production ofrevolutionary automated mooringsystems for commercial and militaryvessels. The mooring systems havebeen adopted by important shippingand port companies, including well-known operators such as PatrickShipping (Pty) Limited of Australiaand the Port of Dover (UK). MSLinstalled its first ship based systemcalled “IronSailor”on a rail passengerferry in 1999. Since commissioningthis system has safely performed over10,000 automatic mooring operationswithout ropes and without theintervention of mooring teams.In March 2004, Mooring SystemsLimited entered into an alliance withthe Cavotec Group granting them thelicence for the manufacture, themarketing and the service of theirproducts.

A breakthrough in maritime technology.

For thousands of years, the traditionalpractice of mooring with ropes hasremained unchanged. Even in today’shighly competitive transportationmarket with tens of thousands ofships, serving the massiveinternational trade in consumer goodsand bulk commodities, mooringmethods have remained largelyunchanged since the first sailorsventured out to sea.

Changing an ancient and acceptedtradition, such as mooring ships withropes, was the challenge faced byMSL. Because of the dynamics andloads inherent with large bodies likeships moving in a fluid environment,any change to this practice requiredsignificant innovation besides beingmore cost effective and at least

equally as safe as its predecessor.The result of this departure from avery old practice is a range of shore-based (QuaySailor Series) and ship-based (IronSailor Series) automaticmooring systems.

Automating the mooring processrepresents an entirely new field ofmaritime technology. It is a highlycomplex and multi-disciplined areainvolving design of new products andin-depth analysis of environmentalconditions and loads, hull forms, civilstructural requirements and customerneeds. The products are gaining greatacknowledgement and interestworldwide.

Development of the system.

Based in Christchurch, New Zealand,the Mooring Systems Limited (MSL)technical team consists of experiencedmaritime personnel, naval architectsand mechanical and electricalengineers who have over the yearsevaluated the performance andgeometry of nearly a hundred in-housesystem designs.

MSL’s new systems have captured allof the flexibility and characteristics oftraditional mooring lines in a range ofautomated systems. Instead of a rope,the products use vacuum pads toprovide the mooring attachment.Each pad has a measurable workingload, providing a powerful physicalattachment between ship and shore.MSL’s vacuum pads have been testedand rated under the supervision of theinternational classification societiesDet Norske Veritas (DNV) and LloydsRegister. When combined with theinnovative, three dimensional

supporting apparatus, the mooringunits emulate the range of movement,resilience and elasticity of a line mooring.Today, MSL’s standard vacuum padscan cope with extensive surfaceirregularities and are able to slideunder extreme loads withoutsignificant seal deformation or loss ofattachment. Because the mooringunits attach to the ship closer to thewaterline and immediately counteractmooring forces, the system has agreater mooring efficiency than angledropes. By using sophisticated internetbased control software the systempermits the user to monitor performan-ce clearly communicating all essentialmooring load informatio in real-time.Full control mechanisms and properload measurement combined withrobust communication systems arerequired to avoid unacceptable riskswith the vacuum couple and theoverall integrity of the mooring.

Mooring load information is producedfrom the measurement of vacuumefficiencies and from monitoringathwartships and fore and afthydraulic cylinders.With a full knowledge of the mooringconditions at all times, the operatorhas complete control andunderstanding of the moored state ofthe vessel. MSL is currently the onlycompany in the world to havesuccessfully designed, implementedand proven ship vacuum mooring in acommercial environment. In thisprocess they have discovered keyelements of intellectual propertyrelating to their designs andprocesses. MSL has protected thesefeatures having a number of patentspending internationally.

Shore-based mooring system.QuaySailor Series

The ‘QuaySailor’ is the name given to the range of generic shore based mooring systems. It represents a major technicalleap from the first ship-based system developed in 1999 as it does not require specific installations on the ship and candirectly attach to the hull of most commercial and military vessels. The quay face model has the distinctive advantage ofcompact storage when not in use. This enables the system to rest behind the maximum fender impact line during berthing.When activated, the vacuum pad support frame is extended outwards and the vacuum mooring connection is establishedin a few seconds. The “QuaySailor” is designed to cater for most ship and shore configurations and has several significantfeatures including:

• 3-dimensional actuation and dampening arrangement• Ship Positioning• Load and control measurement• Real time internet based monitoring and data event logging

The first QuaySailor Series 40 was installed in Picton, New Zealand in 2002 and has since achieved hundreds of safe andreliable automatic moorings. The current range of shore-based units are shown below:

1 QuaySailor 20The QuaySailor 20 is designed to meet theneeds of light high-speed single and doublehulled craft that service short haul fastturnaround routes in harbours, inlandwaterways, canals and between islands.The system is designed for single operatorcontrol, actuating and mooring the vesselin less than 6 seconds with an unit designload of 20,000 kg and an outreach of600mm.

2 QuaySailor 40The QuaySailor 40 is ideally suited toships from 70 up to 250 metres in length.The number of units required to safelymoor a ship will be dependent on the hullwindage area and environmental weatherpatterns. In most instances between 2 and6 units will be required for a single berth.The unit has a design load capacity of40,000 kg and an outreach of 1100mm.

3 QuaySailor 80The QuaySailor 80 is designed to meet theneeds of larger ships in exposed seawayconditions where high windage is common.The unit ranges up and down the quay faceand can cope with tidal variations of up to10 metres and surge conditions causingvertical, fore and aft movement, of up to 1metre per second. Typically, three or fourunits will be required for large Ro/Rovessels. The unit has a design load capacityof 80,000 kg and an outreach of 2500mm.

Ship-based mooring system.IronSailor Series

1 IronSailor Series EThe Series E is an externally mounted unitthat is designed to be retrofitted to toexisting ships. The unit is stowed atsheerstrake level when not in use.

When activated, the units travel down thehull of the ship and couple with a platemounted on the shore.

3 IronSailor Series TThe Series T system is designed to meetthe needs of barge and inland waterwayoperators.

The unit is similar to the QuaySailorSeries in respect of geometry allowingsmaller service craft to automaticallysecure to lager vessels for transshipmentoperations.

The "IronSailor" is the name given to the range of generic ship based mooring systems developed by Mooring SystemsLimited since 1998. This was the year that MSL’s first product, the “IronSailor Series I” was installed on the “Aratere” a150m, 12,000 g.r.t. rail passenger ferry built by H.J. Barreras SA in Vigo, Spain. This system is a specific ship basedautomated mooring system that comprises of 4 units rated at 20 tonnes each. The units are positioned in pairs with twounits forward on the ship and two units aft. They are activated from the bridge wing of the ship’s wheelhouse, extendingout through hull doors to attach to a steel plate on the berth. Since its installations the “IronSailor” has performed over10,000 automatic moorings, proving the system and technology beyond doubt.

The complete range of ship based systems consists of three different models to be able to better meet specific requestsfrom customers. The current range of ship-based units are shown below:

Monitoring & Control Interfaces.

One of the most important elements ofMSL’s systems is the control interface.The systems utilise state of the artcontrol components to provide a userfriendly operating environment forboth ship and shore personnel.

Using secure encrypted radio linksbetween ship and shore and internetcompatible software, MSL is able toprovide all users with system statusinformation. This means that, forexample, harbour authorities canmonitor (and control whereappropriate) the mooring systemperformance electronically andremotely. In fact a single operator cancontrol the mooring for an entire port.

Where control systems are resident onthe vessel the ship Master can controlthe mooring of his ship with just twobuttons: “Moor” and “Detach”.

The system can be monitored and controlled in realtime directly from the bridge.

and control the mooring systems remotely.Various trend display options provide immediate

information of the moored condition over time whileaccurately measuring wind data.
