From the Principal... Together We Can Over twenty years ago a group of lay people from northern Macomb County had a vision and their project became the “Journey of a Lifetime” Campaign. Fast forward to 2018 and all of us involved over the years have truly had a journey of a lifetime in making Austin Catholic a reality.

On May 22nd we celebrated our Fourth Commencement Ceremony and ushered 22 graduates across the stage to join a prestigious group of alumni. Whether you are one of the 32 Austin Catholic Alumni or over 2,000 Detroit Austin Prep Alumni, you are a member of a much greater network of Augustinians worldwide. Our school slogan….Providing New Opportunities with Long Standing Tradition … recognizes not only our vision and mission to provide the best education to our students for today’s world but that our philosophy, our values, our pedagogy, and our foundations all stem from a much larger and stronger tradition of Augustinian education. I personally have been blessed with an extremely strong support system of Augustinian Educators from around the world. Their passion for our project is exciting and invigorating and we are excited to announce that in the spring of 2020 we will host the Augustinian Values Institute for educators from our network of schools in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. No pressure, but with a great team, we can do it! At this point, together we can accomplish just about anything.

Our current “Together We Can” Capital Campaign is charging along and this issue of The Connection highlights not only our amazing students and staff, but also our newest project to build The Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics. The campaign and the expansion/renovation projects it will fund are not only directly benefiting current and future students, but it is taking the Journey of a Lifetime so many embarked on down a newer, brighter path of opportunities all while maintaining a strong connection to our traditions and foundations. It is definitely honoring our past and investing in our future. I offer for you to join us on our journey in this newest chapter of Austin Catholic and show everyone that nothing is impossible when we come together. As St. Augustine states in The City of God, “A Community is a group of individuals bound together by the harmony and communion as to the things they look for and they love. In order to discover the character of a community we have only to observe what they love” (19,24). And here at Austin, we love our youth and our future. Together...We Can! Educationally Yours in Christ,

Mrs. Coppens Mrs. Janel M. Coppens Principal & Head of School

On March 17th, the Men of the Sacred Heart returned to ACHS to enthrone the new building. Each room was consecrated to the Sacred Hearts of Mary and Jesus by Father Robert Slaten and Deacons Tim Maxwell and Dennis Loffreda.

Catholic Schools Week A Week of Spirit & Service

Austin was “A Glow” during the week of Catholic Schools Week. The annual spirit week collected 410 pairs of socks and over 60 lbs. of canned goods for local charities, $500 in pennies for Augustinian Missions in Peru, and a crib full of supplies for Compassion Pregnancy. The second semester all-school service day saw each House take on an off-campus and an on-campus project. New this year was the Glow Fest held on Wed, January 31st. Current and perspective students enjoyed a fun night filled with music, dancing, photo booth and dodgeball all under the black lights while wearing glow sticks, bracelets and paint. It was a great night for the Austin family and the start of a new tradition to a week that is about celebrating our faith and our school!

Quizbowl Back-to-Back Gold Medalists: The Austin Quiz Bowl Team has something to be extremely proud of this season. They won 1st place at the Michigan Social Studies Olympiad at Clarkston High School on Saturday, May 19th making them back-to-back champions of this event. “They worked together as a team to defend their title and win the gold,” said Coach Mrs. Brown. Competing in the state-wide competition were senior Robert Boerner, junior Arianna Stawiasz, and sophomores Gabe Nahhas, Ethan Neff, and James Thomas.

Who Done It? Forensic Science Workshop Does it Again! Coming off the success of last year’s Forensic Science workshop, the National Honor Society decided to go bigger this year — hosting a second day and inviting additional schools. 5th graders from St. Lawrence Catholic School, St. Isaac Joques (St. Clair Shores), Immaculate Conception (Ira Twp.), and St. Thecla (Clinton Twp.) attended either the March 23rd or April 24th workshops where they were charged with solving a murder using scientific evidence.

They learned about hair and fiber analysis, performed class density tests and finger print identification, and interrogated suspects with questions based on their evidence. After completing the various stations, students gathered to discuss crime solving. Students at

the April 24th workshop benefited from Chesterfield Police Officer Robinson and his experience working with evidence collection, crime scenes, and lab tests.

NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE! Basketball season became more about support for a beloved Austin member than about the number of wins and losses. During the season the Austin family was informed that the Athletic Director, Mike Miller, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Both the Girls ‘and Boys’ Basketball teams, along with the Austin family, rallied around Coach Miller. The boys’ team collected money amongst themselves and gave Coach a gas card to help with the travel to and from his appointments. The girls’ team created t-shirts and sold them to the Austin community and Senior Sydney Dziurman worked with the Parent’s Advisory Association to sell purple pancreatic cancer bracelets with the profits also being given to Coach Miller for his treatment. Students, staff and the wider community have continued to rally around Mr. Miller and his family. To see the students and our wider Austin family give so much in honor of Coach Miller is another example of our core values of Caritas and Unitas in action.

Last Minute Help Request Leaves Austin Students’ Hearts Full! Austin was contacted at the last minute to see if we could provide some students to assist with Glen H Peters School Center Programs family fun day. We had an overwhelming response from the student body to aid the school. Fifteen students assisted in providing games, personal assistance, and clean up. “It was awesome being able to help the kids,” said freshman Jenna Krause, “I feel so good about my day today.” Glen H. Peters is one of two programs in the Macomb Interme-diate School District serving students with moderate cognitive impairments (MoCI), severe cognitive impairments (SCI) and severe multiple impairments (SXI) from age three through twen-ty-six years of age.

Austin Donates Climbing Wall to Local Elementary

When Austin purchased our building, it came with an elementary climbing wall. As a gesture of Unitas towards one of our local Catholic elementary schools, Austin donated the climbing wall to St. Lawrence Catholic School right before Catholic School’s Week. The St. Lawrence students and staff were excited to have this addition to their gymnasium and Austin students and staff were happy to see the wall go to a good home where it will be used.

Advancement

The Class of 2018 remembered attending Rev. Brecht’s funeral and Austin’s first graduation at St. Clare of Montefalco their freshman year and felt it was only fitting they celebrated their own graduation at this special location. The 22 members of Austin’s class of 2018 have made their mark since they walked through the doors four years ago. As we send them out into the world, we celebrate their accomplishments. Congratulations and may God watch over you on your journey. Baccalaureate Mass & Commencement were held at St. Clare of Montefalco Church on Tuesday, May 22nd with the Revered Christopher Talbot, ACHS Chairman of the Board, as celebrant. Rev. Talbot referenced how fitting their graduation was to fall on the feast of St. Rita; patron saint of the impossible and hopeless causes and how their successes have proved hard work, love and a great support system can get you through anything. Valedictorian Sydney Dziurman focused on transformation and how outward appearances are only a fraction of the power within. “If we look deeper, we see a more fundamental change – beyond hairstyles, career choices and college preferences, we see a true transformation in our character. Transformation goes beyond the braces, hair styles, and the momentarily stylish clothes we wore freshman year, it’s a fundamental change in us...Austin has prepared us for this moment when we transfigure from a naive, impulsive teen to a young adult of a more charitable and humble nature in God’s image.”

Highlighting the rocky road, steep hills, and adversity their class has overcome while maintaining their unity as a family was the greatest thing about us, stated Student Body President, GariAnn Cadelina in her address. Themed around Miley Cyrus’s song, The Climb, Cadelina wowed the audience by singing the song to conclude her address. Finally, before diplomas were conferred Mrs. Coppens addressed the graduates challenging them to live in the moment and put their cell phones down to spend time with those they love. She reiterated how the impossible and hopeless were nothing more than the “middle child syndrome” and like most middle children they to will grow up to be amazingly fierce, hardworking, spirited individuals. “You have already shown how your love and devotion can make a difference. No go do more, be more, and when in times of hopelessness, pray to St. Rita.”

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give

you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Class of 2018 Celebrates Graduation

Lady Crusaders Varsity Soccer: 2nd Season Focuses on Teamwork & Skills This is the Austin Girls Soccer program’s second year, and they are making strides from their first season. They are a young team with a bright future. The majority freshman and sophomore team was led by captains junior Kat Fluegel and sole senior Kylee Eubanks. Kat was the leading scorer with 10 goals and 4 assists. However, they were not dependent on one player. On a team with 14 girls, they had 10 girls either score a goal or get an assist. Defensively led by Kylee Eubanks the team posted three shutouts and Goalkeeper, sophomore, Ariana Stawiasz had 66 saves on the year. One of the season highlights was finishing the Warren Fitzgerald Tournament by beating the hosts in a penalty kick 1-0. The team enters tournament play with a record of 6-10 and hosted the first round of the MHSAA District Tournament.

Track & Field: Running Strong The Crusader boys and girls team got off to a great start this year with several school records being broken at the very first meet of the season! Since then, several more records and personal best times have been recorded Though they are a small team, their quality and talent is very big! BOY’S TEAM: Seven boys competed this year led by juniors Benjamin Brown who holds eight school records and Chris Shorkey who holds six records. GIRL’S TEAM: Five young ladies competed this year led by senior Kylee Eubanks who holds four

school records. Carmela Shorkey also now holds three records. All but one teammate medaled at the MHSAA Regional meet and Benji and Carmela qualified for the State Meet in June. At the CHSL C/D Championships the runners and field events brought home tons of hardware and. Benji and Carmela earned All Catholic honors.

Golf: Community Effort Chips in for Inaugural Season The students wanted it and the community came through. Austin Catholic launched its first golf program this spring as a co-ed team and by the looks of them they are going to build on the incredibly rich tradition that saw Austin Prep win back to back state championships in golf in 1970 and 1971. The six individuals that comprise the first golf team have put in the hard work and dedication to start the process

of once again building a successful program. With donated clubs from the general community and the dedication of first year coach Nick Champine and long-time player and coach Bill Littlejohn, the players competed hard while learning a great deal about the game of golf. The improvement over the first two months of the season has been monumental and has set the tone for the Austin Catholic High

SPRING SPORTS … Together They Can!

Rev. Victor became involved with Austin when he was assigned to St. Isidore Catholic Community. His seat on the Board of Directors became more of a mission than a duty as he has fought to promote Catholic education and Austin Catholic as a parish priority in and around the area. Rev. Victor and his parish have continued to support ACHS through strong partnerships, financial support, and community events. Mr. Harrington graduated from Austin Catholic Prep in 1963 and didn’t believe he would ever see his alma mater rise again. As a member of the Austin Board of Directors and TWC Team he continually strives for more for Austin. His undying spirit for anything Austin, has rallied alumni, businesses and fellow Board members. Thank you to both individuals for your dedication and support! Also recognized was Mr. Mike Miller for his dedicated service to Austin during his five years as Athletic Director. Presented with the “Staff Dedication & Service Award”, Mr. Miller announced his official retirement from Austin but promises to stay involved as much as he can. Mr. & Mrs. Gary and Amy Warren, and Mr. & Mrs. John and Kathy Eubanks were presented with the “Volunteers of the Year” award for their above and beyond support and time given over the years. Class of 2018 Honors: Brendon Krimmel received the Leonard Brillati Ambassador Award for his

commitment to promoting Austin as an ambassador over his four years. Robert Boerner received the Rev. David Brecht Christian Witness Award for

his dedication to his family, his parish, his peers, his community and his faith through his daily actions and service.

WINTER SPORTS RECAP

Girls’ Basketball The Austin Girls Basketball Team had an outstanding season ending with a 15-4 record. They worked hard, withstood many injuries, and grew tremendously as basketball players. The small team, comprised of many freshmen and sophomore Hannah Klatzke, got the job done and learned many individual and team skills under rookie coaches Dayna Berzack and Angela D’Ascenzo. Veteran juniors Kat Fluegel, Maria Schudt, and Amanda Warren, and lone senior Kylee Eubanks provided leadership. The team also enjoyed team bonding and time off the court when they traveled to watch college teams play including a weekend trip to The University of Notre Dame where they toured the facilities, watched a game, prayed at the Grotto, and also practiced. Boys’ Basketball The Austin Boys Basketball Team ended a challenging season with a home win against Landmark Academy, to whom they lost by nearly 40 points when the two teams played in December. It was their first home win since their inaugural season in 2016. The team was just 2-10 in varsity play for the season. Team MVP Benjamin Brown (junior) scored a career high 22 points, and senior Nick Zyble added his career high 12 points in their last game, making head coach Joe Plawecki very proud and the team dedicating the win to Athletic Director, Mike Miller who is battling Pancreatic Cancer. “We wanted to do it for Mr. Miller and to show him how hard we can work to make him proud of our teams and programs,” said a player. For more on the basketball teams’ and school efforts for Mr. Miller see the back section. Bowling The Austin Bowling teams continue to improve and roll toward solidifying their success. This year’s teams sent multiple bowlers to regionals and had full boys and girls squads. Finishing the season with improved records and a few team wins, Austin bowlers are leaving their mark. Junior Nathan Salamon led the boys team with an average of 162, high game of 193 and posted 69 strikes. Juniors Peter Otremba and Nathan Shipley, and senior Robert Boerner contributed to the young team’s success guiding freshman Timothy Bowlman, and newcomers sophomore Ethan Neff and junior Austin Demick toward personal bests. Leading the girls team was senior Elaina Smyka who posted a 160 average, 41 strikes and a high game of 185. Joining her were freshman Madeline Beattie, Isabelle Vasilidies, Ellie Elward and juniors Ariana Stawiasz and Rebecca Chase.

2018 Austin Teacher-of-the Year Nominated by her Austin Catholic peers, Mrs. Mary Brown was selected as the Austin Teacher of the Year. Announced at the Spirit of Austin Dinner, Mrs. Brown will receive her award at the annual CHSL Awards dinner with teachers from across the Archdiocese. Brown was most notably said to believe in every student, find creative hands-on lessons, and never miss a chance to get involved. “She is dedicated to her students and her school, there is never an event that Mary doesn’t attend,” said one colleague. Congratulations to Mrs. Brown!

1958 STATE TROPHY You Ask & You Shall Receive! We are honored to announce that the 1958 State Basketball Championship Trophy has joined the Austin Friar Showcase and Memorabilia here at Austin. Many thanks to Mr. Rick Handloser, ’59, who presented it to Mrs. Upton, Director of Alumni Relations, and the school in April. In addition to the trophy, Rick shared many newspaper articles and keepsakes regarding Dave DeBusschere that he has cherished over the years. The following is a letter sharing his thoughts. Thank you Rick!

Dear Lisa,

I have been in possession of the trophy for the past five or six years,

and before that, I have no knowledge of its whereabouts. It was

given to me at a clandestine location by individuals whom I choose

to remain anonymous. I was unable to attend the dedication of the

new Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics which I feel is a great

way to not only honor the great player that he was, but also to

honor his legacy as the humble and kind individual that he was. In

other words, he never forgot his roots. He was the type of person

that once you became a friend, you became a friend for life, both on

and off the basketball court. This trophy means a lot to me since my

name is fortunate to be engraved on it, but at this time in my life,

being on the back nine as they say, I feel it would mean more to the

new school and the center for athletics, then sitting in my basement

where only I can appreciate it. I am not seeking any personal

recognition for myself, I just feel the trophy should be displayed to

honor a great period in the history of Austin Catholic High School

along with the greatest athlete ever to walk its hallways and

compete on the hardwood court.

Sincerely,

Rick Handloser ‘59

A Group of Alumni gathered once again for the Midwest Augustinian’s Gala in March at the Drake Hotel in Chica-go. Thank you to Dcn. John and Bobbi Sfire for hosting the group. It was a wonderful event for a great purpose.

Midwest Augustinian Gala

Student Athletes Roll into History Books Three more student athletes have made ACHS history when they qualified for the MHSAA State Finals this winter and spring. Three student athletes qualified for the state meet in the fall in cross-country.

Senior bowling captain, Elaina Smyka joined the State Qualifier ranks in March when she competed in Battle Creek, which made her the third student athlete to represent Austin at an MHSAA state meet. Elaina bowled well and represented Austin with pride. She was later accorded membership as a MHSIBCA Bowling All-State Academic Team member for her academic and athletic prowess. Congratulations Elaina! This spring, junior Benjamin Brown and freshman Carmela Shorkey qualified for the MHSAA State Track and Field Finals. Both Carmela and Benjamin qualified for the Cross Country finals in the fall making them the first athletes to qualify for two state finals in the same year. Benjamin will compete in the boys’ 3200m and 300m hurdles and Carmela will compete in the girls’ 3200m. Good luck to both on June 2nd in Hudsonville, MI.

Art Program Continues to Shine The Austin Art program continues to shine under direction of instructor Bill Littlejohn. Recently three students earned honors at this year’s Macomb County Art Show held at Anton Art Center. Pictured at left with tMr. Bill Littlejohn are students

Jamie Roberts (10th), Madeline Beattie (9th) and Abby Weingartz (9th). Pictured below are the girls’ art selections featured at the show. Also this spring, 2017 graduate Noah Bowles had three of his projects featured at the College for Creative Studies Spring show in Detroit. Noah is a freshman at CCS.

With the news of the school shooting in Parkland, students across the country rallied together in support of the students of Parkland and of gun control. While many schools chose to allow their students to walk out in support, Austin chose to Pray Out. Students and staff silently went to the chapel at 10:17am and had a prayer service praying for the

students/staff at Parkland and for peace. This service was a moving tribute for all our students and staff. The issue of school safety today is one that Austin takes very seriously. Mr. Coppens and Mrs. Olejniczak are working with the Local First Responders to keep Austin safe. Local First Responders have been in the school learning about the school’s layout, and have worked with the Administration to run our Active Shooter drills. After the drills, the officers spoke to both the students and staff about what to do in these situations, and how to keep our students and staff safe. They even brought out the dog to do a drug check drill. We are presently working to host a county wide Active Shooter drill in June with all of the local agencies. These continued relationships will help to make our school safer. Another highlight this winter is the number of guest speakers that have presented to our student body, which covered the topics of virtue, destructive decisions, and bullying. The Archdiocese of Detroit sponsored the Culture Project, a group of young people who taught our students the value of virtue and integrity. The student body was split into male and female groups and presented with candid discussions on the importance of restoring culture through virtues. Students engaged with great questions and left understanding what “Authentic Love” is and how virtuous choices can make stronger relationships later in life. Our newly added S.A.D.D. club sponsored a guest speaker to address the student body about making destructive decisions. Kenny Spears shared his life story and how his decisions in college led him

down a road of drugs and homelessness. His brutal honesty on his initial “trying” things , his later selling of drugs, and his time in jail and living in abandoned homes, had students listening. Hitting what he described as rock bottom, he talked about his road to recovery and how his decisions ruined relationships within his family that he is still trying to mend. Our Parent Advisory Assoc iat ion a l so brought in a guest speaker on bullying. Anthony Lanni, a f o r m e r M S U basketball player, spoke to the students about his experiences with bullying. The unique part of Anthony is that he has a form of autism, and was told he would never be successful in life. One of the most touching moments is when one of our students raised his hands and told Anthony that he was autistic, and Mr. Lanni responded, “It is an honor to meet you.” His message that each person can become whatever he/she wants, and that you have control of your life not the bully, resonated with each student at Austin. Finally, this spring, members of our Austin Community, including staff and parents, experienced two retreats on our Core Values. First Mrs. Coppens held a one-day Augustinian Values Retreat for staff, parents and board members to learn more about our patron Saint and our educational philosophies. Then in April a group traveled to New Jersey for the annual Augustinian Values Institute (AVI) with Augustinian schools from across the U.S., Canada and Europe. These spiritual experiences challenged attendees to look at the core values of Truth, Love and Unity within ourselves, within the Austin community, and across our nation and world. Both experiences left a significant impact on attendees and they are excited to strengthen the culture and learning at Austin.

DeBusschere Athletic Center … Austin Alumni Get First Look

One year ago at the Austin Alumni golf event, alumni began talking about how they could make Dave DeBusschere, and all that he stood for, an integral part of Austin Catholic High School. It wasn’t difficult. And today, we are on our way to-ward building the Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics. On February 20th and April 11th, Alumni gatherings were held at Austin to share the vision and discuss the reality of bringing the DDCFA to fruition. This $3.5 million effort is Phase II of the $12 million dollar Together We Can capital campaign. It was great to see alums from the 50’s thru the 70’s get together, share a meal, visit the Austin Friar Alumni Room, and listen to the action plan. As Alumni chair, Bill Harrington said, “It’s GAME TIME guys and we’re in it to WIN!

A Note from the Advancement Office: 2017-2018 has been a great year and I wanted to take a minute to thank those that have contributed to our success this academic year. Whether you contributed to our Annual Fund, made a pledge or donation to the TWC Campaign, or attended/or sponsored any of our events, we are truly grateful for your commitment to Austin. Your support does not go unnoticed and allows us the ability to continue our good works….Providing New Opportunities….With Long Standing Tradition. There are many ways to show your support of Austin and I wanted to provide some additional information to help guide in your giving in the upcoming year. If you should have any questions, please give me a call at any time. I am happy to discuss the many options we have available. I wish everyone a safe and fun-filled summer. See you back in August for the best year yet!

Blessings Always, Lisa Upton, Director of Advancement & Alumni Relations

Capital Campaign/Together We Can

A Capital Campaign is created to fund a specific project, such as a Gymnasium Expansion, Chapel, and Science/Tech Wing Renovations.

It runs simultaneously with an Annual Fund Appeal. Gifts received will directly go to the campaign project.

Capital Campaign gifts can be a pledge or a one-time donation. Naming opportunities for designated areas for set gift amounts are available.

Endowments

An endowment is a permanent fund that holds its principal in perpetuity and is invested for the benefit of a particular purpose. You can establish a permanent endowment to benefit Austin with a gift of cash, securities or complex assets. Once in place, the Endowment fund will grow and make annual distributions to support Austin for generations.

Austin Catholic High School partnered with the Catholic Foundation of Michigan and created four Scholarship Endowment Funds. Anyone can make a contribution to an existing endowment fund in any dollar amount.

The Rick Pine Scholarship Endowment, The Class of 1963 Scholarship Endowment, The Gary Evatz Scholarship Endowment, The Augustinian Scholarship Endowment

Wills and Living Trusts

By including Austin Catholic High School in your will or living trust, you can make an important and lasting gift of an Augustinian education based on truth, unity, and love for future Austin Catholic students while meeting your financial and estate planning goals.

A bequest can take many forms, and because a bequest qualifies for the estate tax charitable deduction, it may reduce your taxable estate.

Retirement Plan Assets

Annual Fund Appeal/Annual Giving

Austin Catholic High School’s Annual Fund Ap-peal /Annual Giving is an on-going fundraising effort that supports operations. Gifts received are used to help operate the school and can be restrict-ed for a specific department.

FOREVER 22 Connections to Dave DeBusschere and Graduating Class Excite Students Everyone knew the gym project was moving forward. Mrs. Coppens was working with the Architectural Firm: French & Associates and the engineers and surveyors were measuring the property, but no one knew the details. On March 22nd, 60 years after Austin defeated Benton Harbor to win the 1958 Basketball Championships, Austin Catholic Administrators announced to students, staff, and families that the new athlet-ic facility would be named “The Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics”. During the mini assembly the students were shown a video clip about Dave DeBusschere and his lifelong accomplishments and treated to a personal visit from long-time friend and teammate Russ Schoenherr. Then the fun began. In a presentation themed on the #22, students learned the significance of March 22nd and how these #22’s all connect to Dave! Not only did Dave wear the #22 but he also has 22 letters in his name, his first MLB game was on the 22nd of April, he had 22 career at bats with the White Sox and the date of his death (5-14-03) when added equals 22. By now the student body was sus-pense. When the presentation went on to state that the score of the championship game was 71-68 and those digits all equal 22, they erupted in a frenzy of cheers. To top it off the students were beyond words when we reminded them that this year we had 22 graduates, the same number of graduating classes from Detroit Austin accept-ing diplomas on the 22nd of May, and next year’s student body enters with the gradua-tion year of….2022! The cheers were beyond loud! So what does this all mean? Well, why wouldn’t we want to honor the greatest athlete to graduate from Austin and quite frankly one of the greatest athletes to come from Michigan. With blessings from the family, Austin Catholic High School is extremely blessed and proud to announce the Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics…ground breaking coming soon!

The Dave DeBusschere Center for Athletics is the first enhancement/renovation of Phase II of the Together We Can Capital Campaign. The project is a commitment to our athletics program and to the greater community. Athletics is a driving force for families and students making their decision on where to attend high school. A state of the art athletics center will attract and promote our admissions and athletics prospects to the school. The Center will be a bridge between current students, our graduates and the Austin Alumni. A space that can be used for multiple gatherings and special events, not just athletics, will promote our strong unity and school spirit. The NEW Center for Athletics will boast the following Amenities: Expansion of gymnasium to full competition size court

with seating for 300+ Multipurpose fitness and sport training rooms

Renovated weight room and training area Concessions and gallery space for showcases and events Locker rooms, team rooms, coaching/physical

education staff and athletic director offices The addition will also house the offices and workspace for the Business Office, Admissions, & Advancement personnel. The School Store will be relocated to the front in new space. Finally the construction will enhance parking and general traffic flow with clear entrances and exits, visitor and special events parking and the overall building façade will be updated to feel like a Catholic school campus. Currently the team is working with architectural firm French & Associates to complete the schematics, engineering and construction details and have set construction to begin in late 2018.

In addition to the DeBusschere Center, Phase II will include various other enhancements and renovations including: Athletic Fields Soccer field drainage and grading Future tennis courts Storage and Concession space

Your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other qualified retirement plan may be heavily taxed if left to anyone other than a legally recognized spouse. By naming Austin as a benefi-ciary of all or a portion, you avoid both the estate tax and income tax due.

& Honors Night in Style!

Brown!

4th Annual Spirit of Austin On Thursday, May 17th Austin Catholic hosted it’s fourth Annual Spirit of Austin Dinner. Besides honoring the achievements of the Class of 2018, Austin bestowed it’s highest recognition, The Spirit of Austin Award, to Rev. Ron Victor and Mr. Bill Harrington, ‘63 for their continued support and dedication as benefactors and avid Austin supporters.
