All my life I have loved to read magazines they have always been sitting on my coffee table, nightstand and on the patio. I could never understand why I would open up an August issue and there would be nothing in there about August. We were still in the middle of summer and every magazine had fall in my face. I did not want to think about those short days and cold nights yet. I wanted to hold on to that moment, summer. I knew then that I would some day work on a magazine and that my August issue would be about August. So enjoy your summer just a little longer and turn the pages of this months Nationalist to find, fashion that warms you from head to toe. News you need to know that might save your pets life and make up tips that help you look as young as you feel. Get to know products that are made in America and help change our country on item at a time. Every time you make a purchase you are helping a company and sure your helping the right one. People are always complaining that our economy is not where it should be and I couldn't agree more. But, I know that if we all made a commitment to buy one item that is made in America instead of made else where per week things would change. So this summer do your part and pick up something at a local store not the mall or a big box a local mom and pop shop and make sure it was made here. Now turn the page and enjoy…

Summer Essentials

The summer heat can take hold of your fashion sense; but that doesn’t mean your style should melt away with the humidity. Keep it cool with these summer essentials. It’s so don’t be afraid of adding splashes of color to your wardrobe its all about expression your true colors. The best way to influence a bland outfit would be a bright lip. Choosing a shade that goes well with your skin tone can be difficult but if you are fair skinned opt for ruby reds, pastel pinks, peony or even an Omber lip and if you have a darker complexion opt for bright oranges, flamingo pinks, and neon reds. When wearing a bright lip it is best to keep it simple with an A-line dress or black and white attire. Mixing and matching patterns can create contrast; bold patterns and bright hues are definitely do-able this summer so don’t be shy and let your true colors fly!

Floral Frenzy: Embrace your inner artisan in floral inspired gowns and frilly feathers it can give your outfit the fun and fabulous appeal. When pairing feathers and floral together, choose colors that are within the same family cool tones of blue, purple, and green or warmer tones of orange, red, and yellow.

Mega-Bold: Update your oh so boring clutch with a mega bright clutch for summer. A bright clutch can complement a colorless outfit bringing it to life with a bold pop of color. Choose from indigos, canary yellows, radiant reds, tangerines, and fuchsia tones. When choosing a more colorful outfit such as a maxi dress opt for a darker clutch. Add some spice to your outfit with bangles, fur accessories, and pointed toe heels.

Lip Candy: Luxurious lips call for flamingo pinks and flaming fuchsias this summer it’s all about being bold with your lips. But choosing the right color that complements your skin and complexion is ideal, if you choose the wrong shade you can end up looking washed out so stick to brighter fuchsias and pastels if you have a warmer complexion and red and tangerines if you are more fair skinned. Ombre lips are in this season not only for hair but also lips. The Ombre lip can accompany any outfit making you look like a true fashionista. -Chantal Rashtian

Oh MY!

The makeup you use in the summer is different from most other times of the year because of the heat, and not to mention the sun! The sun can do wonderful things for your skin, such as even out your skin tone and give you a great glow, but it can also cause sweating, which means makeup meltdown. Luckily, it’s much easier to get away with less makeup this time of year. Here are a few tips:-Sarah Kasman

Use mascara! Even if you don’t want to wear much makeup, some black mascara will add definition to your face. Only use waterproof when needed though, because too much waterproof mascara will lead to brittle lashes.

Define your eyebrows too. If you are lucky enough to have full and defined brows, skip this step. But, a thicker brow had not only been on trend for some time now, but if the eyes are the windows to your soul, then your brows are the frames! Give them some love and you will look instantly more polished without wearing too much makeup.

Skip foundation if you don’t need it. The sun will help your skin look more even, and foundation is usually the first thing to be sweat off anyway. Stick to spot covering with some concealer.

Tip # 1

Tip # 2

Don’t be afraid of bright colors. The best way to wear bright colors is on the lips with a bright lip-gloss. Coral colors have been extremely popular lately, and what’s prettier than a coral lip? Experiment with colored eyeliner if you’re feeling adventurous. A pop of color to the lower lash line adds something new without looking over done.

Tip # 3

Tip # 4

Beware of glitter. In the sun, products such as bronzers and blushes that contain glitter or shimmer will light your face up like a disco ball. Keep your face products matte and leave the shimmer for your eyes if you can’t resist some glitter.

Tip # 5

Keep your skin fresh and hydrated this summer

Sun exposure in the summer means skin damage and drying. A little sun can do your face some good, but it’s important to treat and prevent the drying damage caused in the heat! -Sarah Kasman

1. Facial scrubs are an important part in keeping your skin smooth. Get rid of that dry skin, and uncover the fresh skin beneath!

The nest step is moisturizing. A good, basic, facial moisturizer will do the job. Use it every morning, and if after being in the sun for a while your skin feels dehydrated, apply again!

Night time is a perfect time to get some really intense and healing moisturizing done, so use a gentle but intensely moisturizing cream.

24 Nationalist mag.com

Don’t neglect your lips! They can get chapped in the sun, so keep lip balm with you at all times.

20’s: Preventative and moisturizing In your 20’s, it’s rare to have any wrinkles or sagging. So, the best way to keep your skin looking that way is preventative care! Use SPF every day, and use moisturizers that keep your skin plump and hydrated. Pay close attention and care to your eyes because that’s where aging first begins. Use an eye cream that intensively moisturizes so that you can put off fine lines for longer, and keep your eye area healthy.

To Grow or Not to Grow?

Where do you go if you need eggs or vegetables? The grocery store? Well, that is beginning to change. This tough economy has been forcing people to try to save money any way they can. One way that you can save money is by having your own mini farm, where you can grow your own food and save a trip to the grocery store. You do not need much to start a mini farm, just a bit of space, access to water, and some extra time. However, the benefits of growing your own food are well worth the changes you will have to make.

First, of course, is that you save money because you are not buying as much at the grocery store. According to the Wall Street Journal, $1 worth of seeds yields $75 worth of produce. Plus, isn’t is so much more rewarding to eat food that you have made with your own hands than to buy it at the store? Second, you can improve your health because you are going to be eating fresh pesticide free food! Tending to a mini farm will also make it easier for you and your family to get the required daily servings of fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

Third, taking care of a mini farm can become a fun hobby and all this physical activity can actually help you stay in shape. You can burn as many calories in 45 minutes of gardening as you can in 30 minutes of aerobics. Plus, if you have kids this could be a fun activity for you all to do together and it can help teach them responsibility as well as the importance of eating fresh and healthy food. Start small, do your research, and make sure you are having fun!

Your Visa Has Been Approved

This also creates a drag on local economies and hurts many U.S. metropolitan areas. The southern states are some of the most hurt by the foreign job affair, since many workers did not have college degrees unemployment has brought them little options. Yet, this is only tapping one of the ways U.S. jobs seem to be lost abroad. What happens when recent international graduates finish college? How does their job success measure up to that of American citizens? An ABC News article titled, Are Americans Losing High-Skilled Jobs to Foreigners, this article pinpoints the fact that H1B visas are granted to high-skilled foreign workers with a U.S. master’s degree or higher. In fact, according to the article, in 2010 almost half a million workers in the U.S. had H1B visas. Without foreign workers half a million Americans could have a better chance of obtaining a job assuming all H1B holders were employed.

Foreign Job Competition: Where has foreign job competition taken the America? In a recent study co-authored by MIT economist David Autor new information about the impact of foreign job competition has surfaced. According to Autor’s study manufacturing jobs taken abroad leave U.S. workers unemployed, sometimes permanently.

In 2010 almost half a million workers in the U.S. had H1B visas.

Why are employers looking to foreign countries for workers? Well there is a variety of reasons. One is the issue of seniority. As a person gets older and accumulates more years with a certain company their wages tend to raise well above what a recent college graduate is expected to make. With these options companies tend to look away from seniority in order to afford younger college graduates. Companies have lost the sense loyalty to their employees. We as a nation should support companies

that have long time employees. The American people have more power then they think. We need to know where we shop, who we are giving our money to. Where are the products coming from that fill our homes? If each of us would take a stand and find out is this product made in America, does the company that makes it employ Americans or do they employ H1B visa students. Support companies that you know and care about. Another issue is American’s decisions in degrees. In 2008 Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, stood before the House Science Committee in hopes that math and science education programs would be promoted in the United States.

“First U.S. companies face a severe shortfall of scientists and engineers with expertise to develop the next generation of breakthroughs. Second, we don’t invest enough as a nation in the basic research needed to derive long term innovation. If we don’t reverse this our competitive advantage will erode.” Bill Gates

The use of foreigners to fill American jobs seems to hurt the U.S. economy, because American’s feel foreigners are taking high-skilled jobs. The only way to secure American jobs in America is through education for both the American students and the consumers.-Gabriela Cuevas

Has our economy caused us to rethink the common good or has it only made us stronger?

Classical republicanism or the idea of placing the needs of people as a community above individual liberty and self-determination was one of the main ideas that influenced the founders of the U.S. Constitution. Classical republicanism and inalienable rights (life, liberty, and property) established core values that founders saw as important for the Constitution, but why? Individual rights were important to the founders as well as the American people because they did not want their government to violate their rights as Great Britain had done, but why was there a need for classical republicanism? Why was there a calling for the protection of the common good? Classical republicanism was one of the ideals that the founders pulled from antiquity. The three main ideas that founders saw important with classical republicanism were as follows: Small, uniform communities – With classical republican thinkers, founders saw that government worked well in small communities that were uniform with people that held similar beliefs and customs. Moral education – Moral education with classical republicans required that children develop proper habits including respect, fairness, generosity, and self-control. Civic virtue and citizenship – It was an important ideal to set aside personal interests in order to promote the common good for classical republican thinkers. They also believed that citizens should have the courage to do what was right even when times were difficult. The main reason founders incorporated classical republican beliefs of civic virtue and citizenship in the Constitution was because they wanted American citizens to be active politically but also care for the greater good and push the country forward as a whole. Naturally classical republican ideals could not stand alone as the only U.S. Constitution principles. The founders had to provide a way for individual freedoms to be clearly represented and protected; therefore, a Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. With these additions the founders were able to create a document that has survived various changes in society and the industrial world, but have the nation’s people lost hope in the core principles men like George Washington supported? We want to know what you think go to Nationalistmagazine.com to voice your opinion -Gabriela Cuevas

The past few years have hit Americans hard. With the national employment rate at an 8.1% it is no wonder some Americans have lost hope, but what does that really mean? With a loss of faith in the United States government, are people turning to self-achievement and focusing on themselves, leaving the ideas of national improvement behind? Balancing individual rights and the fate of the greater good has remained a struggle since the drafting of the U.S. Constitution. When economic problems arise in our nation, the distrust for governmental bodies rises and citizens lose hope that any improvements will present themselves. Does this in turn hamper the idea of a unified country and are we losing ourselves to our own needs?

The IRS and the Affordable Care Act: Tax, Penalty, Myth?

As I tried to figure out how to read through the 974 page law, titled Compilation of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, I lost myself in definitions, transitions, headings, and redundancy. While the information about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) seems to be endless there are many disagreements over whether or not the ACA will bring about new taxes and empty America’s wallets. There will be five major taxes that will affect Americans in 2013, one of them being the Medical Device Manufacturing Tax clearly stated on the IRS website under Affordable Care Act Tax Provisions. This manufacturing tax will not be taxed directly to health care recipients instead the tax increase suggests an increase in charges for companies selling some medical devises. In other words, the manufacturing tax would work as a backdoor Trojan, taxing indirectly. The ACA, which was enacted on March 23, 2010, will be administered in part by the IRS who will be handling penalties for those citizens required to have healthcare but choosing not to. Debates have also risen over whether or not these penalties will be taxes or not and if the IRS would have enough man power to support the added responsibility of the ACA.

When you go to your local store for whatever product you may be looking for do you ever check the tag? Do you know where that item came from or who made it? Do you care? Well you should. You should check the tag or label for a few reasons, first off you should want to know where it came from because that is where your money will be headed second you should know who made it. Do you care if a child is forced to sew for 15 hours a day so that you can buy a top for five bucks, I know I care. I will not wear something a child was placed into slavery to make. There are so many reasons to know where our products are coming from. You may have said in the past, I would love to buy American made products but I don’t know Where to find them well now there is a place for you to not only find them but a place to find out all about the products. The next few pages are products that are Made in the USA and they are made by great companies that any American would love to support.

From Day to Night !

This season when looking for an outfit converter your most significant helpers are your accessories. So keep those bangles you never wear because you’ll need them in the long haul! The base of an outfit should be simple such a black dress or pencil skirt. Key pieces such as a button up blouse or dip dyed denim can change to an evening look by adding a blazer and some studded stilettos. When wearing a little black dress during the day it can become an evening look by adding a chain necklace, strappy sandal pumps, and a smoky eye. Keep it casual for day time and amp it up at night with more makeup and accessories. -Chantal Rashtian

Ways to Save on Grooming

Pets come with a lot of responsibility. We have to feed them, shelter them, take them to the vet, and groom them. All of this can add up to a lot of money spent. Pets can cost between $700-$4000 a year. Besides vet bills, grooming can be the largest expense of having a pet. So how do we save money on it while still keeping our animals happy and healthy?

3. If you are knowledgeable about grooming, consider doing it yourself! Wash your animal regularly, at least every three months, and do your own trimming. Clean your dog’s ears with a dropper by mixing two parts water and one part white vinegar or buy some cheap but nicer smelling options from American brands like Pal Dog and NaturVet.

Save, Save, Save

1. Dogs are supposed to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. Some need to be groomed more often, some less often. Getting your animals groomed on a regular basis can actually be cheaper for you. Animals that are groomed less often get matted and, therefore, it takes groomers longer to clean them up.

2. Brush your dogs or cats every week. This will make it easier to get rid of the mats and will make it so your groomer does not have to spend as much time brushing out your pet.

Get a nail clipper, like this Resco clipper that is made in the usa, and start doing this yourself as early as you can. However, make sure you are doing it right so that you do not harm your pet!

Stray Cats: The Dangers and Ways To Help The Humane Society of

the United States estimates that around 70 million feral and stray cats roam the streets. They spend their days and nights trying to survive and avoiding hungry predators. Many stray cats fear humans and, for this reason, can act aggressively toward both us and our pets if they feel like they are being cornered. In addition to this, many

infected with these diseases, this is somewhat exaggerated. These diseases usually can only be transmitted to humans through direct contact. However, if a stray cat bites or scratches one of our pets, there is the possibility that their diseases can be transmitted to them and then to us. Diseases can also be transferred to other

feral cats live in colonies with other feral cats. This pack mentality can make them even more dangerous and unpredictable. Feral cats often have not been neutered and so they can have litters and litters of kittens which further increase the size of the colony. Unneutered cats are also more likely to fight. Stray cats also can be infested with fleas and carry dangerous diseases. While it is largely believed that we can also become

animals via fleas. They can also be a threat to other animals. According to The American Bird Conservancy, every year cats kill millions of birds and small mammals, including endangered species. In addition to this, if a feral cat needs to be placed in a shelter for a mandatory holding time, and there is not enough room, an adoptable cat may be put down to make room for the feral cat.

Page 77: August Issue 2012

So with all these dangers we must ask ourselves: how do we decrease the number of stray and feral cats? It starts with us, pet owners. First, get your feline spayed or neutered! Second, if you can no longer care for your cat, do not just leave it behind. Many owners assume that cats can find food on their own and can take care of themselves. This is what has caused the huge number of ownerless kitties! The sad reality is that many cats that are left behind die of starvation or from fighting. Those that survive this harsh environment can become completely unrecognizable, in both their appearance and their personality. These cats have the hardest time getting adopted so in order for the numbers to go down and the euthanasia to stop we, as the owners, must be responsible for our pets. In addition to this, we need to stop feeding these cats. Now I know this might sound strange. We feel bad for these abandoned cats

and so we want to help them. However, we would help them more if we were able to get them off the streets. For example, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a three step strategy that The Humane Society of the United States implements to reduce the number of stray cats. These cats are trapped and then taken to a vet where they get a check up and any shots or medication that they need and then they are neutered. The adoptable cats are placed for adoption while the more feral cats are returned to their previous location but looked after by a specialized caretaker. A feral cat in a shelter would most likely be euthanized. Because the TNR strategy is able to bypass the shelters altogether, this chance is decreased. The main goal of TNR is to get adoptable cats into loving homes and feral cats neutered and looked after. However, it is not enough to just TNR because even with these adoptable cats gone, new unneutered ones will replace them if we keep feeding them. No amount of TNR will help decrease stray or feral cats if we continue to feed them. Therefore, it is up to us to help these cats by doing what is best for them. - Kristyn Anguiano

Hartz Hurts

A quick Google search will tell you if anyone has had issues with this product before. If the product is dangerous or even deadly you will be grateful that you spent the minute or so to research it. Hartz is one brand that can be especially harmful to your pet and yet their products are still being sold at stores without even a warning on them. Hartz’ products

analyzed the illness and death statistics for the brands named in the EPA Public Advisory and found that dogs were 2.5 times more likely to die from Hartz than any of the other dangerous brands listed. Cats, similarly, were 3 times more likely to die from Hartz than the other brands. Given this statistic it is easy to understand why there are so many anti Hartz websites. Countless

The recent complaints over dogs getting ill or dying from pet treats made in China have shown us that not all products are safe. Just because a product is being sold, do not assume that it is good for your pet. Always check the labels and do your research!

packaging . There is a reason why dog and cat formulas are different as it can be extremely harmful for cats to receive the dog formula and vice versa. In 2010, Hartz was named in the EPA Public Advisory as a potentially dangerous brand. BrokenHartz, a blog dedicated to bringing to light the truth about Hartz,

have been under fire since at least the 1980s and they continue to do harm. HartzVictims.org was created in 2002 after the owner’s cat got ill after using Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick drops. Since then, there have been hundreds of posts on the website from people who blame Hartz for killing or nearly killing their pets. It is so sad to see all these tragedies and yet know that Hartz products are still being sold with unsuspecting owners picking them up and buying them every day. The government has not been completely silent. In 2005 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) forced Hartz to reformulate their cat products because it had sickened and killed so many pets, but their dog products and their new cat products are still being sold and are just as dangerous. There is also evidence that several Hartz products have been mislabeled in the past. This means that the dog formula has been placed in the cat packaging and the dog product in the cat

families have been affected by using Hartz flea and tick preventatives. For example, one dog was badly burned after his owner used the drops on him. This chemical burn was so extreme that the dog’s back is now hairless. One owner’s cat had seizures a couple of hours after they used Hartz Ultraguard Onespot Treatment for cats and kittens. He died soon after. These are just two examples but there have been many more like them. The flea and tick drops are not the only Hartz products that have caused problems, though. Cats have been burned by the flea collars. In 2010, Hartz dog treats were found to be tainted with salmonella. In addition to this, their shampoo has also led to the premature deaths of dogs and cats. Hartz, has not admitted to any wrongdoing. Hartz also states that their products are FDA approved but we could not find that information. -Kristyn Anguiano

Safety Not Guaranteed- An Amazing Movie With a Great Soundtrack “Safety Not Guaranteed” is an independent drama/comedy following two interns (Aubrey Plaza, “Parks and Recreation” and Karan Soni) and their superior (Jake M. Johnson, “New Girl”) chasing a story about a man named Kenneth (Mark Duplass) that has placed a classified ad in the paper in hopes of finding someone to time travel with him. The movie itself was excellent, featuring strong performances by the entire cast, notably Plaza and Mark Duplass. Plaza brings over aspects of her character April Ludgate from “Parks and Recreation,” featuring a damning view on life yet displaying a repertoire one does not really see on the show. Admittedly, the only other production I have seen Mark Duplass in is FX’s “The League,” where he plays the boisterous fantasy football nut Pete Eckhart. I was pleasantly surprised to see him play the fragile Kenneth so well, making him loveable and funny, yet making the audience unsure of his intentions. One thing I personally enjoyed beyond the script and well executed acting was the soundtrack. Ryan Miller, who is the lead singer of the band ‘Guster,’ is responsible for a large chunk of the score. It is one thing to have a great scene, but music that accompanies it so well just elevates it to another level. We have seen it before in other indie movies, such as “Garden State,” which won a Golden Globe for best compilation soundtrack album. Also, Mark Duplass who is already well grounded as an actor, writer, and producer displays yet another talent, busting out a heartfelt acoustic tune using a zither. Music also featured includes Guster, Summer Fiction, The Hoppin’ Haole Brothers, and Hearts on Fire. - James Lumalu

The 2012 MLB All Star Game has passed, thus officially beginning the second half of the season. Looking past the obvious things of pennant races or award races, part two of the season also boasts the trade deadline which is on July 31st. So which teams are the ones to watch as the deadline nears? Philadelphia Phillies The Phillies currently sit at 37-51, 15 games back of first place, and in the cellar of the National League East. Their offense has taken a huge hit with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley being out for most of the season. On the pitching side, Roy Halladay has been out since May with a strained right shoulder. Because of all this, the Phillies suddenly look like a seller instead of buyer this time of year.

Scoreboard - 2012 MLB Trade Deadline—Teams to Watch

Their major trade piece is starting pitcher Cole Hamels. He is undoubtedly a top of the rotation pitcher that any team would love to have for a playoff run, the drawback is that he will become a free agent at seasons end. This poses a conundrum for interested teams, and the Phillies alike. As a team looking to acquire Hamels, do you pony up the players that general manager Ruben Amaro would look for in a trade for his ace? If you are the Phillies, realistically teams will not be interested in parting with the prospects for less than half a season of Cole Hamels. Also, Hamels will almost surely not sign an extension during the season, which damages how much teams would be willing to trade for Hamels.

Other trade pieces on the Phillies include outfielders Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino. Victorino, like Hamels, will also be a free agent at seasons end. Pence will be arbitration eligible in the offseason and is a sure bet to make an excess of 13 million next season. Potential fits for Hamels: Texas Rangers Potential fits for Victorino/Pence: Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers are currently four games under .500 and seven games out of first in the National League Central. Whether or not they decide to become sellers will be something to watch in the coming weeks as they also hold another top of the rotation pitcher in Zack Greinke. Like Cole Hamels, Greinke will be a free agent at seasons end. Greinke has been solid this season with a 3.57 ERA, but his FIP and xFIP both indicate that he has been far better than that mark (2.56 and 2.81). His groundball percentage is also up to 53.2% this year, compared to 47.3% last season. Potential Fits: Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Page 83: August Issue 2012

Scoreboard

Needless to say, Theo Epstein and the rest of the Cubs brain trust are still in their rebuilding phase. They have an opportunity to add some pieces with some attractive commodities headlined by starting pitcher Matt Garza. Garza’s had a down year with his ERA currently sitting at 4.32, one run higher than last season, and already serving up 15 homeruns, also exceeding his total from last year. Still Garza is more than capable and is underperforming to his abilities. Garza also has one more season of team control, so if the Cubs decide to deal him they should be able to acquire some nice prospects. Another starting pitcher they have available is Ryan Dempster. Unlike Garza, he will be a free agent at season’s end, but there really is no use for a club that will not be making the playoffs to keep him if they can get something worthwhile for him. Though he may not

Chicago Cubs

be as good as his 1.86 ERA indicates, he has cut down his walks per nine innings by more than one (3.65 in 2012 to 2.45 in 2012), and has limited the amount of homeruns he has served up. Their last piece is a bit of a wildcard. Alfonso Soriano has been hot, hitting .275 with 17 homeruns, while slugging .500. The problem with moving Soriano is that the Cubs would have to absorb a majority of his contract in order to deal him. The return in a trade for Soriano would also definitely be less significant than Garza or Dempster. Potential fits for Garza: Tigers Potential fits for Dempster: Dodgers, Tigers, Yankees, Braves, Angels, White Sox Potential fits for Soriano: Rays - James Lumalu

Michelle DeFraites is an actress, dancer and singer. Originally from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Michelle was a member of the tween singing group "4 Part Angel" from 2005-2007. They were featured on "Good Morning America," and were guests on "The Montel Williams Show." In 2008, Michelle moved to the Los Angeles area to pursue an acting career. Since that time, she has appeared in television commercials, voice overs, music videos and has done photo shoots for shopping malls across the country. She guest-starred on the Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana" and co-starred on "Suite Life On Deck." She is a Disney Movie Surfer and played Karissa in Lifetime's "The Pregnancy Pact". We caught up with Michelle for an interview Tell us a little about how you got started. I got started in acting when I was really young in community theater and my love for it just grew from there. I had the chance to move to LA when I was 14 after my parents took me to a scouting event called ProScout. After that we moved and it's pretty much been a whirlwind from there! What was a big moment in your life? I think a really big moment in my life was when I booked my first real acting job. That was when I really knew that acting wasn't just a silly dream that couldn't be achieved, but that I was actually good enough! It gave me the confidence I needed to keep going after what I really wanted! What was your most exciting project you have worked on? The most exciting job that I have done was probably Disney's Movie Surfers. It was so great because I had the opportunity to fly to all these new places all over the world and meet incredible people like Johnny Depp and even the Muppets, which was completely surreal! Tell us what you think about the American dream. I think the American dream is getting the chance to do whatever it is that you love to do without anyone telling you that you can't, and I know that I am 100% living the American dream right now! Do you try to buy American made products, if so which ones. I do my best! I love finding fun, little boutiques in my town that are full of American made products! It's really important, especially now, to make sure we are supporting our economy here in America.

What do you like to do when not working. When I'm not working I'm taking college classes on the side just to make sure I'm still getting an education. Along with that, I love going to movies with friends and going to this new place that's a warehouse full of trampolines! We all love to go and just jump and flip all over the place! What is your advise to young teens that want to get into the industry? My advice would be to make sure you are 100% positive that this is the business for you! It can be really hard at times and it's not easy, but if you love it, then all the tough times will be worth it and you will enjoy every second! So dream big and work hard!! What are you working on right now. Right now I'm just working on promoting my new movie that is coming out on August 25th. It's called Strawberry Summer and it's just a really cute, family friendly movie with a sweet message! Who is on your play list? Oh wow! There are a lot of people that are on there, but the most are probably Drake and T-Pain! Haha I'm a dancer so their music just makes me wanna get up and dance and always keeps me in a great mood! Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? In 5 years, I see myself hopefully still continuing to do what I love and being surrounded by my amazing family and friends!

Walk the Moon’s Journey to Success

Walk the Moon is an indie rock band that was formed in 2008 by Nicholas Petricca, the lead singer. Petricca spent a lot of time testing out different musicians until he finally found the perfect people to join the group, fellow Ohio natives Kevin Ray, Sean Waugaman, and Eli Maiman. Together they created their most popular song, “Anna Sun”. However, did you know that “Anna Sun” has actually been out for a couple of years now? In 2010, before Walk the Moon got signed by RCA Records they released an independent album titled “i want! i want!” as well as a music video for the song. The video had a pretty low budget, as Walk the Moon was just starting out, and many of the band

members’ friends were extras in it. Although the band members did not know it at the time, that music video would later change their lives. In February 2011 Michael McDonald of Mick Management discovered it and signed on to be their manager. This led to a new music video for “Anna Sun” with a higher budget and a new album under RCA Records. Petricca recently told Interview Magazine that “the song is not necessarily a super-happy song or a super-sad song. It's somewhere in the middle. I think it's about nostalgia and maintaining the sense of being a kid into adulthood. It's about keeping that or losing that.” Even with the nostalgic tone to the song, Walk the Moon wanted to make the rereleased “Anna Sun” even more energetic and fun than the original. "Our intention going into this album, especially in comparison to ‘i want! i want!,’ was to bring energy from the live show onto the recording," Petricca told Billboard.com. And, boy, did that pay off for them!

Page 93: August Issue 2012

Since then, Anna Sun has been featured on Vampire Diaries and added to the video rotation of American Eagle Outfitters. In May 2011, Anna Sun was listed as one of Esquire’s "30 Summer Songs Every Man Should Listen To”. MTV and Seventeen Magazine fans recently named “Anna Sun” the song of the summer. It was also the number one song on Alt Nation on Sirius XM in May. Walk the Moon has played at Lollapalooza, Bonnaro, SXSW, and KROQ’s Weenie Roast, to name a few. They have performed on hit shows like Last Call with Carson Daly, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and Late Show with David Letterman, and have opened for popular bands like Panic at the Disco and Weezer. When asked about the origins of the band name, Petricca told Interview Magazine that “it's a record from The Police. The Police definitely have a mystery and playfulness that we try to have as well…” This is definitely a true statement. In you were to go to a Walk the Moon concert you would see screaming fans and face paint! Both the fans and the band members wear face paint to embrace their inner child and just have fun. When Walk the Moon performed at Bonnaro, the lead singer was shown personally putting paint on any fans that asked. How cool is that? Here’s how to achieve a perfect daytime eye look. This look is so easy that it uses only three colors, and luckily they all come in the same palette!

Beauty

95 Nationalist mag.com

To add dimension to even a daywear makeup, use both matte and textured shadows. (Textured shadows can be shimmery, glittery, or with a satin finish! For daytime, let’s stick with either subtle shimmer or satin). First, apply a light matte color across your lids. This color can be similar to your skin tone, and it is mainly used as a base. It also will cancel out any discoloration on your lid. (Darker skin tones should go for a shadow that is very similar or slightly lighter than their skin, and use colors just a few shades darker in the rest of the steps as well! Same process applies for everyone!)

Next, take a mid-toned color, such as light brown/camel or mid-toned peach (not too orange!), and sweep that lightly through your crease. This will add dimension to your eyes and give them more depth. This should almost look like a natural shadow. Finally, take a darker brown or neutral and apply it to the outer corner of your eyes in a slight V shape. And blend! This is where I like to use a slightly more shimmery or satin finished shadow because it adds a nice effect to the eye and gives even your day look a bit more fun. Take that same dark color and use it with a liner brush to subtly define your lash line. To make the look ever slightly more dramatic, line your bottom lash line as well. Finish off with mascara and you have a quick, classic, and easy makeup look that is fail proof. To make this look adaptable, use the same process (light color on lid, mid-tone through crease, dark color on outer corner) but with different color palettes. Try greens or blues or grays! The possibilities are endless.

Vintage

Vintage pieces can add loads of character and charm to any home. But how do you go about finding pieces that were made in America? Here are some tips for finding that perfect vintage household item. Educate yourself. If you know what kind of piece you’re looking for, i.e., a hutch, research the style of hutch you are most interested in. Once you find a style, look for which companies made the item you’re interested in. Find out if those companies are still around. If they are, contact them and ask if they know where you might find the item you’re looking for. Be prepared to spend a lot of time searching. This is not a quick-one-stop shopping experience. It can take months to locate exactly what you want. Search through antique shops on a regular basis. Ask if they have stock in store rooms that you might be able to look through. Get to know the owners and employees; tell them what you’re looking for and ask them to contact you if they should come across something resembling what you want.

Check for a stamp. Furniture, décor, even fine china, should have a stamp on it somewhere that indicates where it was made. It may not always say “USA” – instead it could say “Newark, NJ” or “Big Basin, Calif”. Look carefully. These stamps are often difficult to see at first glance. Visit auctions, estate sales, garage sales, etc. What someone else considers garbage might be your treasure. If you’re not interested in visiting antique stores, auctions and the like, you may try to find vintage home goods online. Educate yourself. You still need to know what to look for. Visit sites like Etsy.com and make sure to enter “vintage” and “American made” in the search dialogue box. Make sure there is a stamp on the piece that says where it was made. If the seller did not post a picture of a stamp, ask them if they can send you one. In all cases, you should ask the seller if they know the story behind the item you are buying. After all, that’s what you want to bring into your home when you are buying vintage. - Tarryn Simmons

NANETTE LEPORE New York designer Nanette Lepore is at the front position of a movement to save the New York's collapsing Garment District. "We can control our inventory," she told the Nightly Business Report on PBS in March. Lepore’s company boxes 85 percent of her line about 20,000 garments a month, within a few blocks of her office on West 35th Street. But it's more than philanthropy that motivates her, it’s just good business. "We have speed to market. If Saks is selling out of a top, I can re-cut it and have it back in their stores in 10 days to two weeks.“

Jazmin Whitley Los Angeles designer Jazmin Whitley started a movement before it became trendy. When she launched her line in 2006 Whitley was already on a mission to educate Americans about what she had discovered, made in America was dying and she would not have it. Whitley challenged fashion icons to bring back their production with no avail . She hopes that by now they will follow suite and come back to the states to manufacture their products. Jazmin Whitley is adamant about where her products are made and about the quality of each garment. She is proud to say her products have always been made in America.

“ I am living the American dream every day and I could never imagine making my products any where but here! Why would any one want to do that, for a few more bucks, no thanks.”

Check the label and only buy the ones that are made here I’m sure they will see the demand for their made in America products and hopefully eliminate the other.

This label was one of the first to head to Hong Kong in the '70s but CEO Bud Konheim led the burden to bring it back to Seventh Avenue by 1982. "It wasn't patriotism. It was just good business sense," he told the New York Times in 1995. "Production became very efficient here, and we ended up with a better net profit. I am one of many people that played out that scenario.“ Now

#2. Cape Florida State Park Key Biscayne,

Florida Cape Florida State Park is the home of a historic lighthouse built in 1825 and reconstructed in 1846, and is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. Visitors come to the park to sunbathe, swim and picnic on more than one mile of sandy Atlantic beachfront.

#3 Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks of North Carolina If you love being outdoors and in nature, you will love it on Hatteras Island. It feels like a real island retreat. Its vibe is much different from the northern Outer Banks even though it has many of the same vacation offerings. But Cape Hatteras on the whole has a much more laid-back attitude, probably due to its popularity with outdoorsy types and the water sports crowd. It’s more relaxed, a little simpler and definitely slower paced.
