FOOD PANTRY
The food pantry can use donations such as cereal,
canned soup, rice, tuna, canned meat, mac n’ cheese,
peanut butter and jelly, coffee (nonperishable). They can
also use reusable bags for distribution of food. It is
requested that food pantry recipients bring their own
bags if possible. Please bring all donations to the
Rectory.

This weekend of August 28th & 29th, the second
collection will be in effort to give aid and support
to our Brothers & Sisters of Haiti.
From the Pastor’s Desk
After several weeks of reading St. John’s Gospel, we now return to the
Gospel of Mark. On this 22
nd
Sunday in Ordinary Time, all the
readings are about the commandments of God and the best way to
obey them. We are called to a better balance in our lives between
God’s living Word and the legalistic approach to life and other man-
made requirements.
In the first reading, Moses gives the people of Israel some last-minute
instructions before his death. He reminds them to obey the
commandments of the Lord to be successful in life. He proudly shares
with them the great things God has done for them and urges them to
follow his teaching. “For what great nation is there that has gods so
close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon
him.” (Deut. 4:7)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus confronts the Pharisees for their hypocrisy.
They scrupulously focused mainly on the details and got caught up in
the external observance of the laws. They did not follow these laws
from the heart. Christ points out to them, as well as to us, that “Nothing that enters one from outside can
defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.”
God thus instructs us today to look inward and examine our hearts. He is not deceived by lip service and
good works aimed at soliciting praise or recognition. Only with a pure heart free of self-centered intentions
can we truly obey God’s commandments and make us capable of loving Him and each other. Let us humbly
ask our Lord for the strength to do that.

Desde el escritorio del pastor
Después de varias semanas de leer el Evangelio de San Juan,
ahora volvemos al Evangelio de Marcos. En este 22º Domingo del
Tiempo Ordinario, todas las lecturas son sobre los mandamientos
de Dios y la mejor manera de obedecerlos. Estamos llamados a un
mejor equilibrio en nuestras vidas entre la Palabra viva de Dios y el
enfoque legalista de la vida y otros requisitos creados por el
hombre.
En la primera lectura, Moisés le da al pueblo de Israel algunas
instrucciones de último momento antes de su muerte. Les
recuerda que deben obedecer los mandamientos del Señor para
tener éxito en la vida. Él comparte con orgullo con ellos las
grandes cosas que Dios ha hecho por ellos y los insta a seguir sus
enseñanzas."Porque, ¿qué gran nación hay que tenga dioses tan
cerca de ella como el Señor, nuestro Dios, está para nosotros
cada vez que lo invocamos?" (Deuteronomio 4: 7)
En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús confronta a los fariseos por su hipocresía. Se centraron
escrupulosamente principalmente en los detalles y se vieron atrapados en la observancia externa de
las leyes. No siguieron estas leyes de corazón. Cristo les señala, así como a nosotros, que “nada que
entre a uno desde afuera puede contaminar a esa persona; pero lo que sale de dentro es lo que
contamina ”.
Por eso Dios nos instruye hoy en día para que miremos hacia adentro y examinemos nuestro corazón.
No se deja engañar por la palabrería y las buenas obras destinadas a solicitar elogios o
reconocimiento. Solo con un corazón puro, libre de intenciones egoístas, podemos obedecer
verdaderamente los mandamientos de Dios y hacernos capaces de amarlo a Él y a los demás.
Pidamos humildemente a nuestro Señor la fuerza para hacerlo.
