Dear Parents/Guardians, “It is because of faith that we exchange the present for the future.”

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen

It is quite fitting that in June we recognize the Virtue of Faithfulness, as we have celebrated the faithfulness of our Grade 7 and 8 students who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and our Grade 2 students who celebrated their First Holy Communion. We congratulate them and we support them in their journey into the Catholic Church. We close our year in prayer and faithfulness, as we will be celebrating our Year End Mass on Tuesday, June 28th, at 9:30am at St. Fidelis Church. Parents and guardians are most welcome to join us.

The final weeks of school are always busy, but we cannot forget the wonderful things that continue to go on at St. Fidelis School. Teachers have planned a variety of field trips and excursions, and have contributed their time to preparing students for the Ballroom Dance Showcase, Track and Field and Soccer tournaments. Our annual CSPC BBQ is scheduled for Friday, June 24th – more details will follow soon.

Mrs. Burella and Mr. Ruggeri are very proud of our Grade 8 students as they get ready for their Graduation to High School. Virtue for the month of June is...

Faithfulness“Happy are those who have not seen, yet still believe.”

John 20:29

Faithfulness can be shown in many ways!

Here are some examples:

• Being a Catholic is founded in faith – Faith in the Lord;

• Remember that it is through our words and actions that our faith becomes evident;

• Let your actions be guided by Centurion’s words to Jesus, “Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed;”

• It is our Faith in God that brings comfort to our lives.

Student LifeKINDERS SEE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT A FRIEND

Children in the kindergarten program noticed a friend feeling sad about wearing his glasses for the first time at school. We had a discussion on how we can make this friend feel better. This was their solution. “Let’s all wear glasses.” Children decided to make glasses out of pipe cleaners.

A bicycle is a vehicle. The Highway Traffic Act defines a vehicle as “anything drawn, propelled or driven by any type of power including muscular power”.

HELMETS

All cyclists under the age of eighteen years are required by law to wear a helmet while riding or operating a bicycle, and the chinstrap of the helmet must be securely fastened under the chin. (According to the Highway Traffic Act, 104 2.1.)

WE ENCOURAGE ALL PARENTS TO ENSURE HIS/HER CHILD IS WEARING A PROPERLY FITTED HELMET WHEN RIDING HIS/HER BIKE TO SCHOOL. A PROPERLY FITTED HELMET SHOULD ALSO BE WORN WHEN RIDING A SKATEBOARD TO SCHOOL. YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY MATTERS TO US!

The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario states:218 (1) A police officer who finds any person contravening this Act or any municipal by-law regulating traffic while in charge of a bicycle may require that person to stop and to provide identification of himself or herself (2) Every person who is required to stop, by a police officer acting under subsection (1), shall stop and identify himself or herself to the police officer (3) For the purposes of this section, giving one’s correct name and address is sufficient identification (4) A police officer may arrest without warrant any person who does not comply with subsection (2).

SKATEBOARD RULES WHEN AT SCHOOL

As the warmer weather approaches, many students are choosing to ride skateboards to school. Students who are permitted to ride a skateboard to school will NOT BE ALLOWED to ride the skateboard on school property. Students will be asked, and will be expected, to carry their skateboard to class. The skateboard will remain in the classroom, in a convenient location as determined by the teacher, and may only be retrieved at the end of the day. Students will not be allowed to

access the skateboard during the school day.

INJURY PREVENTION

• Be a responsible rider AND wear a Helmet!• Night riders should have a white light to the front

and a red light or reflector to the rear• Dress brightly to be seen• When turning at intersections, be careful; most

collisions occur at intersections• Look well ahead and avoid hazards, such as

potholes, sewer grates, pedestrians and debris• Shoulder check and signal before turning or

changing lanes.

CRIME PREVENTION

• Register your bike at your local police station or on the internet at www.TorontoPolice.on.ca

• Always lock your bicycle when not in use• Lock your bicycle by placing a chain or cable

through both wheels and the frame and attach around a stationary object

• If your bike is stolen, report the loss to the police immediately.

PUNCTUALITYPunctuality is a characteristic and life skill we strongly encourage at St. Fidelis. It is important that a child develops this responsibility early in life for it will serve him/her well in years to come. For all aged children, it is the responsibility of the parent(s) to ensure they get to school on time.

Students must arrive to school before the 8:30am bell, and be present, in-line with his/her class, when the school bell rings at 8:30am. A student is not permitted to use the main door to access his/her classroom unless they are late. All students entering the front door at 8:30am or later are considered late and will receive a late slip.

Punctuality is one of the many duties of a pupil, as outlined in Regulation 298 of the Education Act. A pupil who is frequently late can be said to be in “habitual neglect of duty” and can be referred to the school principal and/or school social worker if the problem persists.

Thank you for your support in addressing this matter with your child!

PARKINGA reminder to all that the school parking lot is for staff only. Please do not use it for parking, as we do not have enough spots for staff. There is absolutely NO PARKING in the handicap space at the front of the school. The fine is substantial and we need to have the space clear for the appropriate users that need it over the course of the day.

Please observe and respect the “in” and “out” flow in the school’s Kiss N’ Ride loop. A reminder to all that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING PERMITTED ON BANNERMAN STREET. Everyone is encouraged to either walk to school, carpool, use the Kiss N’ Ride in the school parking lot, or to park on Grovedale St. or Rustic Rd. and walk to school. Police and Parking Enforcement have assured us that Bannerman will be closely monitored for proper use.

Please follow the rules of the Kiss n’ Ride program and the directions of our volunteers in order to continue a safe arrival and departure for all our students. Also, please be reminded that the Kiss n’ Ride designated parking spaces are reserved for our volunteer parents only. Thank you to all!

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAMStudent Illness or Absenteeism

If your child is to be absent from school for any reason, please telephone the school to inform the secretary before 8:30am of the day of absence. (We also have a voicemail box for your convenience to call at any time to leave a message.) This will reassure the school that your child is safe. If a child is absent, then we will call home if we have not been notified.

When a student returns to school after an absence, he or she must bring a signed and dated parental or medical note to explain the reason. If you are picking up your child early, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Please be sure to report to the office to sign them out. If you are returning before the end of the day, please sign your child back in at the office.

If children are not feeling well, please give them an opportunity to recuperate at home. It is assumed that if children are well enough to be at school, they are also well enough to take part in recess. Children need time to get some fresh air and stretch their muscles. If they are dressed properly, they will be able to do this in comfort, even on our cold Canadian winter days.

Also, please ensure we have a current emergency number where you can be contacted.

Page 18: ST. FIDELIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL

PIDICULOSISPediculosis, commonly known as LICE, is a common, but pesky problem in schools and among children.

Children are reminded not to share caps or hats, combs and brushes, or other hair accessories. Parents are encouraged to check scalp regularly and to use preventative measures to ensure that their child(ren) do not contact lice.

MEDICATIONPrincipals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we have written, authorization signed by you the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated on a regular basis and are available from the school principal. Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-prescription medications to students.

Students who require an Epi-Pen must have 2 Epi-Pens at school. One to be kept in the office and one to be kept with the student at all times. Students that require “puffers” should have one at school and at home.

All medications will be stored in the main office. Please notify the school if your child suffers from any type of allergy.

ANAPHYLAXIS ALERTAllergen-Aware Environment

Please take special note that we have children in our school who have a very serious, life-threatening allergy to tree nuts, peanuts, all nut/peanut products, all seafood products, called Anaphylaxis.

We are notifying all parents that students should not bring any nuts, peanuts, peanut butter or any food containing nuts or peanut products such as peanut oil, sesame seeds, etc., as well as any seafood products to school.

We ask that you DO NOT bring any personal baking or other treats to the school to share with the class. This is important to ensure the safety and welfare of these children.

LUNCHTIME RULES & LUNCH PROGRAMTo further ensure student safety, students will not be permitted to leave school property to purchase a lunch at a neighborhood food establishment unless they are signed out and accompanied by the parent or guardian of the child, or an authorized adult. The responsible adult must have previous written consent from the parent, a record of which must be on file in the school office.

Children are encouraged to eat lunch at home. Children going home for lunch should leave the school no later than 11:15am and return to the school yard no later than 12:15pm.

If your child eats lunch at school, please ensure that he/she brings a lunch to school every day. We ask that lunches not be brought to school for the students. For those odd times when students do forget their lunches, we ask that lunches brought in be clearly marked and left on the lunch table outside the main office by 11:15. Students can pick up their lunch during the lunch period. Parents Guardians will not be permitted to drop off lunches in the classrooms, nor will students be permitted to pick up their lunches during class time. This is to minimize disruption during important instructional time in the classroom.

SCHOOL BUSESPlease note that if your child is registered to ride the school bus, he or she must ride the school bus and not take the liberty to walk home on any given day. All students on buses must ride the buses to and from school every day.

INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL BUS DELAYSTraffic congestion and varying road conditions can impact on the flow of traffic in Toronto, and this is particularly true during the winter months when snow and ice can be a major factor.

The Toronto Student Transportation Group is pleased to provide information about school bus delays digitally through their website at http://www.torontoschoolbus.org

Click on the pink bar at the top of the homepage to get a listing of any bus routes that are being impacted.

DRESS CODE & STUDENT UNIFORM

Students of St. Fidelis School are to dress in the school’sappropriate dress code or uniform, which consists of thefollowing: a navy blue bottom (pant, kilt, skirt, or short); a plain white or navy blue shirt or top, with or without aschool crest; and a white or navy blue sweater or pullover, also with or without the school crest. Examples of items not allowed are: jogging pants, spaghetti strap tops, jean material, white pants, black tights, and short-shorts.

Suppliers that offer school uniform items are: Gino’s Fashions (www.ginofashion.com/uniforms) and RJ McCarthy’s (www.rjmccarthy.com). Uniforms do not need to be purchased through our suppliers, as the school’s crest on the clothing is optional. Parents may choose to purchase regular navy blue bottoms and a white or navy shirt at another location. Please write your child’s name on all uniform items, as many lost items are returned to the office.

It is essential that all students be in dress code from thebeginning as this sets the tone for the school year. We wish to send a consistent message to all students that the uniform will be strictly enforced. For older students, please remind them that it is their responsibility to ensure they come to school in dress code and you may refer them to the student agenda.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR SHOESWe remind all students from grades JK to grade 8 to have indoor and outdoor shoes ready each day!

ON APPROPRIATE WINTER CLOTHINGAll students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. We ask that students keep an additional pair of shoes at school for indoor purposes. For safety reasons, students should be wearing boots or outdoor footwear in the winter and running shoes indoors.

CONDITIONS WARRANTING INDOOR RECESSESChildren need an opportunity to get exercise and free play time outdoors; however, weather conditions sometimes warrant that indoor recesses, lunch periods and pre-entry periods be considered necessary for student and staff safety. Rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, extreme winds and extreme cold.

Cold weather: when temperature and/or wind-chill factor indicates -18C or lower, children will remain indoors due to risk of frostnip and frostbite.

As the year approaches an end, I want to thank all of the parents, students and staff in the Ward 3 community for another successful school year. So much has been accomplished, and so many celebrations have taken place. Confirmations, First Communion, cultural events, awards recognition for academics, the arts, athletics and social justice. All of these have been supported by our staff and our parents, and for that involvement and leadership we are very grateful.

I congratulate our graduates and wish them continued success in secondary school, post-secondary studies or the world of work.

To the students, staff and parents who will be returning to us in the fall, I wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to the start of another exciting school year in September 2016.

To all of you in Ward, I extend my best wishes for a safe, happy and restful summer!

Sincerely,Sal Piccininni

TCDSBHELPING PARENTS WITH COST OF POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

Attention Elementary School Staff: Please note the message below regarding the availability of a Canada Learning Bond. Our Elementary Guidance Counsellors have recently received information regarding this great opportunity for some of our students. If you are sending newsletters home or meeting with your parent groups, I encourage you to make them aware of potential funds that can be accessed. There are specific criteria that must be met. Canada Learning Bond: The Canadian government is making funds available to students whose family income is below $45 000 annually. For students who qualify, they can set up an RESP with no deposit necessary. The government will grant them $500 initially and then $100 annually. This is to a maximum of $2000. Students are eligible until the age of 15 and they can claim retroactive monies if they did not set up an account earlier. Students are only eligible if they were born after December 31, 2003. Click here for more information. Attention Secondary School Staff: As you know, the Provincial Government announced a number of changes to student grants and loans that will be in place for September 2017. Included below is the press release that summarizes the new Ontario Student Grant information, as well as a link to Questions and Answers regarding the changes made to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Student Mental Health and Well-Being

Newsletter

June, 2016

As the summer approaches it’s time to reflect on the school year. This year brought with it many accomplishments, goals that have been attained or aspired to, happiness, and for some challenges. Let’s take the summer to enjoy time with family and friends and rejuvenate. Take good care and God bless.

Spending Time with Family and Friends

We’ve all experienced the feeling of joy and contentment that comes from spending time with a close friend or family member. Being able to walk away from an encounter with the sense that we are loved and feeling re-energized to carry on with our day. Spending time with family and friends can give a boost to our mental health in many ways. “When it comes to our well-being, other people matter.”

• Spending time with family and friends strengthens our relationship with them and in turn helps us to gain a sense of belonging

• When we spend time with others it gives us the opportunity to share our feelings and experiences and offers emotional support.

• When we support others it promotes our own well-being

• When we build strong social connections it helps us to feel more secure, happier, and gives us a sense of purpose.

Many children and youth look forward to the carefree days of summer and enjoy their time off from the school routine. However, for some children/youth the summer break may be a time of uncertainty. They may have a lot of unstructured time and may have difficulty with a change in their daily routine. There’s a few things that can help children feel more at ease:

• Maintain your son/daughter’s schedule as much as possible eg. bedtime, mealtime

• Post a schedule: By outlining the day’s events your son/daughter will know what is planned for the day and may feel more at ease. For younger children you can use pictures

• Allow time to play outdoors, or just hang out and have some quiet reflection (without electronic devices).

• Schedule activities eg. every afternoon go to the playground or for a walk

Loving God, Creator of all times and places, we thank you for the gift of summertime,

the days of light, warmth and leisure. Thank you for the beauty that surrounds us everywhere we look:

the multi-colored flowers, the deep blue of the sky,

the tranquil surface of lakes, the laughter of children at play,

people strolling in the park, families gathered around picnic tables and

the increased time to spend with family and friends. As we open our eyes and ears to the landscape of nature and people,

open our hearts to receive all as gift. Give us that insight to see you as the Divine Artist.

Help us to realize and appreciate that you are laboring to keep all in existence.

And warm our souls with the awareness of your presence. Let all the gifts we enjoy this summer

deepen our awareness of your love so that we may share this with others and enjoy

a summertime of re-creation.

Amen
