From the desk of Fr. John:

4 in 1

Con nued from last week.

Pray for our church for all of us in it as o en as possible and at least every Sunday during the Intercessory prayer. Make every Sunday a “no excuse Sunday”. Don’t let yourself get by with not a ending with the rest of us. Come ready to give it your best energy in par cipa ng and responding to prayers. Don’t give in to distrac ons. Find your niche. Volunteer in some way in the ministry of our church. Contribute financially in a planned, thought out and propor onal way. Go online to sign up or bring your envelope and make a sacrificial difference with what you give. Plan to spend the whole mass with us. Don’t cut short what you are offering to God; He will not see you short. You will feel much be er about the next thing you are doing. Engage with us about what is not working for you to see if together we can fix it. If you have a different list that can work let me and Deacon Sam know. “The only thing that makes the church endurable is that it is the Body of Christ and that on this we are fed”. “Even in the life of a Chris an, faith rises and falls like the des of an invisible sea. It’s there, even when he or she can’t see it or feel it, if he or she wants it to be there”. Flannery O’Connor. “Will you also go away”. To whom else shall we go, you have the words of eternal life”.

Jesus and Peter: John 6; 67.

Church Project Update August 18, 2019

First and foremost, thank you for your patience and understanding during this long and involved undertaking. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

The interior ceiling and lighting portion of the project is on schedule, so we should be back in the church per the plan (September 14-15). Painting of the nave is also taking place. However, work on a new organ pipe enclosure covering at the west end of the church will continue for some time after we’re back in. This area will be partitioned off in some form or fashion.

Work on the exterior upper roof is progressing. Removal of the old slate went well. After a slow start, work on installing the new upper roof system is now moving along at a good pace with the north side pretty much ready for copper. You can see a small section of copper in place at the northwest corner of the church. Over the next year, the shiny copper finish will weather into a more muted “nut brown” color. Work on the lower roofs will begin in September.

In addition to the weatherization material that went on right after the slate was removed, the metal framework which will hold the copper roof in place was installed. At the same time, a layer of insulation, a layer of pro-tection board, and a layer of ice and water shield was added. So, as the old roof had one layer of roofing paper under the slate tiles, the new roof will have four layers of material under the copper metal.

The bell tower has been more challenging. As was reported earlier, towards the end of our project planning process some additional and important information was received regarding the structural integrity of the bell tower. To make a long and complicated story short, the building committee decided to REMOVE the old lime-stone panels on the tower rather REINFORCE them with additional mechanical fasteners as was the original plan. This meant three things: 1) the weight on the concrete “chimney” structure that is the bell tower was greatly reduced resulting in obvious seismic benefits, 2) the cost of the bell tower component of the project was increased, and 3) the timeline for this portion of the project was elongated.

It’s interesting to note that we’ve had some “award-winning” scaffolding on this project. The elaborate struc-ture surrounding the bell tower took five weeks to erect and was primarily needed for removal of the old lime-stone which was amazingly accomplished in three weeks with relatively little noise and dust. The scaffolding will now be taken down and replaced with a “swing stage” as the new vapor barrier and cladding material are placed. Pardon the temporary look of the bell tower. Know a beautiful new exterior is on the way.

Currently, the total project cost is estimated to be just over $3M, about $500K more than the original budget. The parish has acquired what we hope will be a short-term loan from the archdiocese to help with the cost overrun.

And finally, considering the additional cost, it would be beneficial to have as many of the 4 in 1 campaign pledges paid (either partially or in full) as we can by the completion of the project. If that works for you, great, please do it, and thank you! Sincere appreciation to everyone for what you have and are doing to support this necessary facility improvement and our parish community here at Sacred Heart.
