Big Blue Live Monday, Aug. 31; Tuesday, Sept. 1; and Wednesday, Sept. 2 7 p.m. CT on NET In this three-day live television broadcast, scientists, animal behaviorists and other experts document the extraordinary rejuvenation of the once endangered and now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California. Some of the world’s most charismatic marine creatures – humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, dolphins, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks, shearwaters and brown pelicans – are featured in this convergence of fins, fur and fangs.
ON THE COVER
It’s hot and humid outside, so spend some extra time indoors this month catching up on NET’s great programming on television, radio and online. And, if you’re planning a vacation, don’t miss Discovering Nebraska. Your continued support and generous membership gifts helped us create this new, local television special about the state’s hidden gems – places to visit that are tucked away in small towns and thriving cities. There’s so much to see and do beyond the I-80 exit ramps. (Read more about the show on page 15.)
Summer also means it’s time for the Nebraska State Fair! NET and the fair share an educational mission, so our Ready To Learn team is pleased to host a mobile learning lab as part of the fair’s Nebraska’s Largest Classroom learning tour. Stop by to try our NET Kids educational apps, and experience digital resources that support students and educators in all areas of the state. We’ll be there Monday, Aug. 31; Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Thursday, Sept. 2.
And, next month, NET is pleased to present another local special, Yours, Willa Cather, premiering Sunday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. CT on NET (NET1). Some scholars believed she’d burned all her letters, but that’s not true. Many of them survived – tucked away in drawers, trunks and archives. Meet Willa Cather, a master letter
writer, through words revealed in Yours, Willa Cather. You’ll also enjoy the ibook, website and social reading club that will accompany the program.
On another note, our engineers and crew continue work to replace NET’s KTNE/Alliance television antenna. Channel 13 was knocked off the air in
April when the antenna fell off the tower. A temporary antenna partially restored service, but we continue hearing from viewers who are still without an NET Television signal.
This is a rare and complex situation, and unfortunately, we are not expecting any additional service to be restored before Sept. 1. Please know we are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to navigate the bid and construction process, and we appreciate your patience as we work provide a cost-effective and financially sound solution.
As always, I welcome your thoughts and comments. You can reach me via email at [email protected].

NET Radio Series Creates Portrait of Platte Basin Water shapes our landscapes and lives on the Great Plains, but often in ways we don’t notice until there’s a flood or a drought. The new NET Radio series Voices of the Platte examines how water intersects with the lives of farmers, scientists, teachers and professionals from across Nebraska. The radio series will air each weekend in August during Weekend Edition on Saturdays at 8:35 a.m. CT and All Things Considered on Sundays at 4:35 p.m. CT. After August, Voices of the Platte will continue as an occasional series airing on NET Radio and online at netNebraska.org/radio. Voices of the Platte is a cooperative multimedia project produced by NET Radio and the Platte Basin Timelapse Project. It will highlight a variety of voices from the Platte River Basin, and greater Central Plains, sharing their reflections on how this watershed affects their life, work and sense of place to create a rich portrait of the region through the lens of the environment. The first four voices featured in Voices of the Platte are poet and writer Don Welch; environmental educator and Omaha Tribe member Renee Sans Souci; University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Natural Resources scientist Dan Snow; and retired director of the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources Ann Bleed. Voices of the Platte is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the NET Foundation for Television.

The new NET Television special, Discovering Nebraska, explores the unique places, people and things to do in Nebraska’s 93 counties. In short segments, you’ll hear from Nebraskans about what makes our state special and why your “must see” list should include some of these sites.

Have a question about membership, estate gifts or planning your will?
Support NET with a Charitable
Bequest
Engaging Nebraska
Are you someone who would enjoy supporting NET in our mission to enrich lives and engage minds?
A simple, flexible and versatile way to ensure we can continue our work for years to come is a gift in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest.
Even people who don’t consider themselves “wealthy” often have the resources to make a charitable bequest. It’s an easy way to support the mission of NET, offers several benefits, and, by naming NET in your will or living trust, you become a valued member of NET’s Friends of the Future Society.
Charitable Bequests are:
• Simple – a few sentences in the will or trust are sufficient
• Flexible – you retain control and can change your mind at any time
• Versatile – designate a specific amount, percentage or an exact item
• Specific – choose how the gift will be used
• Beneficial – can provide tax benefits By including a bequest to NET in your will or living trust, you are ensuring that we can continue our mission for years to come. Your gift also entitles your estate to an unlimited federal estate tax charitable deduction. For more information, visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning, or contact one of our planned giving officers to discuss what might work best for you.

Donor Profile
Don Pederson practiced law for 40 years in North Platte before being elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 1996. During his tenure, Pederson’s support of NET was nothing short of remarkable, according to NET’s former general manager Rod Bates, who took over the reins of the organization about the same time Pederson started in the Unicameral.
In 1999, after the Federal Communications Commission mandated that all broadcasters begin using digital technology, consultants said it would take an estimated $30 million to complete NET’s conversion.
Senator Pederson took time to discover how NET served his constituents, and convinced others in the legislature that an investment in NET was an investment in Nebraska, according to Bates. Pederson and Senator Roger Wehrbein of Plattsmouth persuaded fellow appropriations committee members to support NET’s request for funds to meet the digital technology mandate.
Today, Pederson and his wife June continue to personally support NET as generous donors, in addition to being avid viewers and listeners. They’ve been married for 11 years and are enjoying a second chance at love after both losing their first spouses and then getting to know each other in a familiar place – the Capitol. (June worked as a registered lobbyist for 20 years.)
“We watch and learn every night,” said
Pederson’s Leadership Benefits Nebraska and NET
June, who is the director of Aging Partners in Lincoln.
Don also serves NET with his time; he just wrapped up service in June as the finance chair of the NET Foundations for Radio & Television. “NET is a body that holds all of the state together. It is not just important, it is essential,” said Pederson.
“Don’s advice and experience have been invaluable to me since arriving at NET. His affection for NET and the state is boundless,” said Mark Leonard, NET General Manager.

Did You Know?The Nebraska State
Fair diverted 93 percent of waste from landfills in 2014 – qualifying it as a Zero Waste event.
here’s always something new (and maybe a little bit trendy) at the Nebraska State Fair. This year, prepare your taste buds for Spam
on a stick, bacon in a blanket, new gourmet burgers and barbeque burritos. And, for a sweet treat, try a pumpkin spice funnel cake.
As you browse the livestock barns and visit more than 600 indoor and outdoor booths, you’ll see a milking parlor, birthing pavilion, tractors, combines, and products like a new Doggybag that offers a dry bath to your pungent pooch.
But don’t worry – the state fair staples you’ve expected since 1868 are still part of the fun. “Our main goal is to mix traditional food, merchandise, attractions and exhibits with things that are new and unique,” said Jaime Parr, facility director for the Nebraska State Fair.
This is the fair’s sixth year in Grand Island, and the new location is feeling like home. And, like home, it’s a family-friendly place. “We have fun, interactive activities for families and sneak in education whenever we can,” added Parr.
One of the newest educational attractions this year will be the exhibit, STEMming into the Future, which focuses on exploring new worlds relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). “Designed in partnership with the University of Nebraska, the exhibit will feature more than 20 interactive stations or experiences that incorporate STEM learning,” said Parr.
NET and the fair share a similar educational mission. STEM-related television programs, including NOVA, Nature, PBS Kids programs such as Curious George
and PBS online content create opportunities for teachers, home educators and childcare providers to enhance learning in STEM subject areas.
The Nebraska State Fair also supports agricultural education with its award-winning Ag Trading Cards and Agventure Farm where kids pick apples, collect eggs and sell items at a farmer’s market – experiencing how food moves from farm to fork. And, nearly 4,500 students and teachers are expected to take part in Nebraska’s Largest Classroom – a self-guided learning tour of the fair. NET will be one of the exhibitors at the popular educational event.
The fair opens Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
