ON THE COVER

National Memorial Day Concert Sunday, May 29 at 7 & 8:30 p.m. CT on NET Gather with family and friends for a truly American tradition. The spectacular National Memorial Day Concert airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and is co-hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, with conductor Jack Everly and the National Symphony Orchestra. This year’s concert chronicles the journey of one Vietnam veteran who overcame his injuries by sharing his compassion with other veterans. The annual extravaganza features an all-star lineup of musical artists and actors paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. The concert will be available to troops around the world on the American Forces Network.

I’ve been thinking about how public television and radio are sort of like public highways connecting people and communities all across our state. You can enter or exit anytime you

choose, and stay as long as you’d like. And, technology has made it possible for you to access NET’s high-quality programming “highways” on all of your screens and mobile devices – anytime, anywhere.

Looking forward to June, NET will be traveling Nebraska’s highways and byways as we visit with our viewers and members in towns from Lincoln to Scottsbluff. We are planning Friday LIVE radio broadcasts, PBS Kids events, talks with community leaders and screenings of our popular Nebraska Stories series.

We’ll be excited to share more about our trip next month, in the meantime, you can visit netNebraska.org/ontheroad to see what we are planning for our summer “vacation” in Nebraska.  I’m getting ahead of myself though. Let’s talk about MAY! It’s filled with the sort of public television and radio programming you enjoy and expect from NET.

Catch Creighton and Nebraska baseball games, NSAA High School Soccer Championships, a live Nebraska Concerts

broadcast on NET Radio and the last of the three Antiques Roadshow: Omaha episodes which airs on Monday, May 2. Plus, as flowers pop up everywhere, our Backyard Farmer experts offer tips and advice to keep your yards and gardens growing.

On the eve of Memorial Day, NET is proud to broadcast one of PBS’ highest-rated programs. For more than 25 years, the National Memorial Day Concert has honored the military service and sacrifice of all our men and women in uniform, their families at home, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Each year, it’s an excellent program I enjoy, and one that connects families to an American tradition of remembrance and appreciation. (See broadcast times below.)

History, science, drama, trusted news, inspiring music and high-quality children’s programming – you’ll find it all here on NET. As you travel our electronic highways, know that we are grateful for YOUR support. It provides the foundation for all of our success.

Thank you for being a part of what we do.

Feasting on Fuel Tuesday, May 3 at 10:30 p.m. CT on NET

Does it use more energy to make a meal from scratch or get something that is already prepared and convenient?

WATCH Feasting on Fuel for the answer.

How much energy does it take to make your dinner? From growing lettuce to grilling your steak, it takes a lot of fossil fuels to get food from the farm to our tables. In fact, up to one-fifth of our nation’s total energy use goes into growing, transporting, processing and even preparing food, and those costs are hidden throughout our food chain.

The public media reporting collaborations Inside Energy and NET’s Harvest Public Media investigate where all that energy goes, and how farmers, food processors and grocers are trying to cut fossil fuel use in the new program Feasting on Fuel.

In Nebraska, meet producers using less diesel and electricity and more renewable energy sources, such as solar power or wind. Reporters also profile farmers who are growing nitrogen-producing cover crops in an effort to use less fertilizer.

Even though many food retailers are trying to decrease their footprint, they aren’t the biggest energy consumer in the food supply chain. That distinction belongs to the food processing sector. Feasting on Fuel also examines how food-related energy consumption is outpacing overall energy consumption, and how that sector is cutting fossil fuel use.

Ultimate Restorations Beginning Sunday, May 1 at Noon CT on NET

This eight-part series showcases the rescue and restoration of some of the most valuable mechanical icons of the Golden Age (1880-1940), a high point in innovation and craftsmanship.

Once you heard her, you never forgot her. Her bluesy vocals and supercharged emotional delivery took hold as she “shared the secrets of her soul.”

Janis: Little Girl Blue presents an intimate portrait of a driven

artist, yet a genius who was uninhibited on stage

and very shy at the same time. Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents, many seen and heard for the first time in this film. Her letters show the vulnerable artist, daughter, and lover Joplin was – until she self-destructed at age 27.

A self-described natural-born artist, Margaret Berry of Lincoln has a penchant for creative-making – from cooking, gardening, travelling to creating and teaching art. She grew up on a farm near Wahoo with limited access to art classes, but has immersed herself in artistry.

Well-known for her encaustic paintings, Margaret works with beeswax-based paint which can be sculpted, textured and combined with collage materials. She has just been named The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel’s first “Artist In Residence.”Back in the mid-70s,

she had her first contact with NET when she demonstrated batik on The Grand Generation television program. She later served on the NET Foundation Board and considers her membership a top priority.

“As soon as my member magazine arrives, I mark all the programs I want to watch and listen to,” she said.

“NET is unquestionably valued across the state,” Margaret said of the public media network. A fan of both NET Television and NET Radio, she also hailed NET’s progress to offer content via the web and on mobile devices.

Memorial Gifts Can Last Forever

Bridget Robbins Omaha Director of Development

Have a question about membership, estate gifts or planning your will?

Michele Peón-Casanova Director of Major & Planned Giving

800-634-6788, ext. 375 [email protected]

Giving a memorial or honorary gift to a charitable organization can be a thoughtful way to express your remembrance, sympathy and respect for a loved one or friend. It can also be a wonderful way to acknowledge someone’s passion or vision for the future. If you know someone whose life has been touched by NET, we hope you’ll consider honoring them by making a gift to our organization. There are two basic ways to establish an honorary gift: GIVE FOR TODAY: An outright gift can help fund an immediate need for NET or an upcoming project. The financial benefits include an income tax deduction and the possible elimination of capital gains tax for you. GIVE FOR TOMORROW: A future gift through your will or living trust can include a bequest stating that a specific asset, certain dollar amount or a percentage of your estate will pass to NET at your death, in honor of your loved one. No matter which method you choose, you can endow your gift so that it lasts forever. Endowments are structured so that you designate the purpose of your gift. It is invested with, and becomes part of NET’s endowment and a distribution is made each year. Because the principal remains intact, the fund will support NET’s work in perpetuity. One of NET’s planned giving officers can provide additional information about making a memorial gift and how the organization can recognize your generosity.
