Message to Our Members
Tune in for Two Program Premieres Sunday, March 27
Grantchester, Season Two on Masterpiece Mystery!8 p.m. CT on NETThe whiskey-drinking, jazz-loving vicar Sidney Chambers dons his priestly collar and veteran cop Geordie Keating his rumpled raincoat – for a new season as an improbable crime-fighting team. The two bring justice and spiritual nourishment to the small country parish of Grantchester in early 1950s England. Grantchester, Season Two airs in six exciting episodes.
Mr. Selfridge – Season Four on Masterpiece9 p.m. CT on NET (Two-hour premiere)Inspired by the turbulent life of charismatic American retail entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, the series returns for its fourth and final season. Nine years have passed – it is now 1928 – and we find Harry at the pinnacle of his power and fame. But, will he take a dramatic fall as he loses hold on the empire and social status he worked so hard to create? The truth is revealed in ten new episodes.
As I looked through all the programs and activities we have for you in March, I was thinking, “Wow! There’s so much going on!” Then on second thought, I realized this happens every month at NET!
While we say a fond farewell to Downton Abbey after six wonderful seasons, Grantchester and Mr. Selfridge move into the spotlight, along with two new local programs, Bago Boys and Nebraska’s Sacred Places (see pages 3 and 15 for more details). You can cheer on your favorite teams during the girls and boys state high school basketball championships, plus get complete coverage of the presidential candidates, the primaries and all the issues from PBS NewsHour, NPR and our own NET News team.
As election season ramps up, there’s no shortage of information about each candidate. NET is one of the stations where you can find television and radio coverage, but what we offer stands apart from what you’ll see and hear from the other networks. As an organization, we pride ourselves on news that goes beyond the headlines and the short sound bites of the day. NPR, PBS and NET offer thoughtful analysis of the issues that affect our state, region and country.
This quote from Thomas Jefferson appears in our U.S. Capitol Building, and it reminds me that no matter what side of the fence you’re on, it’s important to be informed. “Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day.” – Thomas Jefferson
NET is excited to be one of the first of a handful of public television stations across the country to launch a new benefit for members. NET Passport gives you anytime, anywhere on-demand access to more than 900 hours of your favorite PBS programs. If you are an NET member at the $60-level or above, you can watch past seasons of Downton Abbey, The Great British Baking Show, Wolf Hall, Makers and so much more. Visit netNebraska.org/passport to start your viewing journey!
NET Passport is an exclusive benefit for our members – and a new way to thank you for your ongoing support of NET.

NSAA Girls and Boys State High School BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The state’s best battle for titles and trophies!
Thursday, March 3 at 7:45 p.m. CT on NET
Fewer than 800 people live in the tiny village of Winnebago in northeast Nebraska. The high school there didn’t have a reputation as a basketball powerhouse, but in 2015 the Class C-1 team won all but one game – earning themselves a spot in Nebraska’s NSAA Boys Basketball Championships. The new NET production Bago Boys tells the story of the team’s championship season, the challenges players faced on and off the court and Winnebago High School’s unlikely rise to the pinnacle of state high school basketball.
When the team took the court at Lincoln’s Pinnacle Bank Arena on March 14, 2015, they expected everyone to be against
them. Not so. The crowd was on its feet, cheering them on to victory and a state championship trophy. “We did it! They proved everybody wrong. Soak it in and enjoy it, rarely you will be part of a State Championship team…soak it in,” said Jeff Berridge, Winnebago High School boys basketball coach. Bago Boys chronicles the long road to Winnebago’s first state championship since 1940.

Lost Writers of the Plains on Nebraska Stories Ervin Krause was a promising short-story writer in the late 1950s and early 60s, but he died before receiving the acclaim that his early career signaled. Krause was intent to break from the hardships his Nebraska family endured after the Depression, so he earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studied creative writing with the famous poet Karl Shapiro. Shapiro resigned as editor of Prairie Schooner after the university administration pulled one of Krause’s pieces from the publication because they deemed it obscene. Learn more about how this writer’s work was lost to modern readers during a Nebraska Stories segment airing Thursday, March 24 at 7 p.m. CT on NET. Listen to NET Radio March 21-25, following NPR News at Noon for more Lost Writers of the Plains stories, and download the free e-book at netNebraska.org/lostwriters.

Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. CT on NET Sacred places heal us, restore calm, let us experience power, enlighten the mind and inspire the soul. Whether they are churches, temples, shrines or even cemeteries, each sacred place holds a unique meaning that is different for every person. The new NET Television program, Nebraska’s Sacred Places takes you across the state to explore the places Nebraskans find sacred and why. Some are tied to religion, some link us to history and some offer a respite from the chaos and routine of our daily lives. Others are important because of art, architecture or location. Nebraska’s Sacred Places takes you to these sites across the state: Zion Lutheran Church (formerly Thayer, but relocated to Wessel’s Living History Farm in York); Our Lady of Fatima Shrine (Arapahoe); Temple Israel (Omaha); St. Paul’s Methodist Protestant Church/The Stone Church (Culbertson); Ft. McPherson National Cemetery (Maxwell); Linh Quang Buddhist Center (rural Lincoln); Louisville Christ Lutheran Church (Louisville); St. Cecilia’s Cathedral (Omaha); Quinn Chapel AME Church (Lincoln); and Pilgrim Holiness Church (Arthur).

Since you receive our member magazine INSIDE NET, we know you support us. Thank you! So, when you see or hear a message about supporting NET, please know it’s not directed at you. We are talking to those who watch and listen, but don’t support our programming. And, we are encouraging them to make a donation in support of what they enjoy. (Like you!)
We realize our members are sometimes impatient with on-air appeals. However, research shows that it is the most cost effective way for NET to broaden our support base. On air appeals make up roughly one third of the revenue we need to purchase and produce programs.
In an effort to address member concerns, we are trying some new approaches, including shorter pledge drives spread throughout the year. We hope you’ll be patient with us when we ask for support – we need more members like YOU who watch, listen and give.

Skipping a couple coffees each month is an easy sacrifice for University of Nebraska – Lincoln student Rebekah Strotman who has chosen to become an NET Sustaining Star. The continuous financial support offered by Sustaining Stars simplifies budgeting for donors and NET.
“I’m an avid NET Radio listener. Everyone who knows me will tell you that I’m pretty obsessed,” she said. “I have such a wide interest in things going on around the world, and NPR goes into detail about stories I enjoy learning about. It hooks you!”
The junior advertising and public relations major from Lincoln said she was introduced to NPR in high school through friends who listened. Now she wakes up every morning to NET Radio and listens throughout the day in her car or on her computer.
Student “Hooked” by NET Radio
“I’ve learned a lot about our state and am a much more informed citizen. I like to share fun facts with friends, too.”
“I feel really fortunate to be able to dig deeper into topics I’m interested in through Nebraska’s public broadcasting outlets. I even stay connected through the NET Radio App on my phone when I’m on vacation. I like to keep up on local and international news when I travel,” she said.
Strotman translates this value in Nebraska’s public radio by giving monthly to NET and by offering her talents as an NET intern. Her dream job is to be an NPR radio personality one day.
She has followed the careers of NPR’s David Greene, Audie Cornish and Rachel Martin, host of Weekend Edition Sunday. “I’m thinking of starting a podcast about young women and how they relate to pop culture, news and politics. I’d try to throw some humor in there, too!” Strotman added.
Good luck, Rebekah – we’ll be listening!

Life insurance can be a powerful and practical asset, and one of the easiest and most efficient ways to leave a legacy. Although most of us only think of life insurance as protection for our loved ones, it could also become a charitable gift to NET.
When you own a life insurance policy with accumulated cash value
Make an Estate Gift – The Easy Wayand the original purpose for the protection no longer applies – such as to educate children now grown or to provide financial security for a spouse now deceased – your life insurance beneficiary designation can be changed to NET. This creates a gift that can support the programming you enjoy.
One option is simply to name NET as the primary beneficiary. However, naming NET as beneficiary while you retain ownership of the policy does not qualify you for an income tax deduction. If you name NET as the beneficiary and also assign NET ownership of the policy as a current charitable gift, the following good things happen:
You receive an income tax charitable deduction, available under most circumstances.
You realize tax savings from use of the deduction, and these savings can be invested for future income. You reduce your future estate tax liability.
One of NET’s planned giving officers can provide information about various ways to make a gift of life insurance – one that benefits you, as well as NET.
