a prayer request

When I served in a church in Charlotte, we had a “ministry effectiveness expert” who came and led our staff in an in- depth study of our church and how we did things. I could not tell you anything he said during those few days except one, and it has stuck with me ever since. He said, “GOD WILL NOT BRING TO YOUR CHURCH MORE PEOPLE THAN YOUR CHURCH IS WILLING TO CARE FOR.”

We have two real needs in our church, relating to Rescue, that I want to pass along to you.

Our first need relates to Celebrate Recovery. Last Monday night we had over 200 people in CR! A new record. As you may know, we offer CR for adults and Youth. But we are now having 30+ children who accompany their parents. We provide good childcare already, but we need much more.

These children live in the same home with parents and older siblings who are struggling with real hurts, habits, and hang-ups. So they, of course, struggle themselves. And we have a golden opportunity every Monday night to speak the truth of God’s Word into their lives as well.

Not only do we have this great need, we also have a wonderful resource to meet this need. CR has developed a terrific curriculum, titled CELEBRATION STATION - a DVD

based children’s CR study. All we need now is competent and caring leaders to minister to these kids.

Our second need is for folks to be part of our FIRST IMPRESSION TEAM. Our F.I.T. Team serves as greeters in our parking area and at the entrances of our buildings on Sundays. They are our first impression for folks who visit our church. And we only have one shot at a first impression, right? Will you sincerely pray about serving in Celebration Station or on our F.I.T. Team? If you would like to sign up, or just talk about what is involved, please contact me at the church at [email protected] or 864-244-5075.

RESCUE MINISTRY

year #4 of GreeNHouse!

As hard as it may seem to believe, we are getting ready

to start our fourth year of Greenhouse. Since it’s inception,

our attendance has soared on Wednesday nights.

For those new to Brushy Creek, Greenhouse was the tool

we created in order to help us with the Grow portion of our

mission statement. While it is not the only tool we use, it

is the primary one.

During the year, from late August until May, we have 5

sessions of Greenhouse. Each lasts for a period of six

weeks. Typically there is a one week break between the

sessions to allow those teaching a second class to catch

their breath and change gears.

Because of my scheduled knee replacement, I won’t be

teaching in the first session but will be teaching sessions

two through five. Typically a person has about 20 to 25

classes from which they may choose a course of study.

Each session we make sure there are some classes that

have never been offered before. Kristen Belflower, our

Greenhouse Director, does an excellent job at recruiting

teachers and finding classes of interest. This year I will be

teaching all new classes. In the second and fifth sessions I

will be teaching, “A More Secure You.” My guess is that all

of us have struggled at some point with self-image issues.

In session three, my son, Matthew, and I will be leading

a discussion on how to successfully invite your friends in

the marketplace to church. In session four the only require-

ment is that you have adult children. Parenting never stops

but the approach to parenting adults must be different

than when they live under our roofs. Hopefully, I’ll see

some of you in “Parenting Children Who Are Now Adults.”

There are going to be lots of great classes from which

to choose. Sign up today to eat with us on Wednesday

evenings as well. Chef Winston Florence always prepares

meals that are nutritious and delicious. The meals are

affordable and the fellowship is priceless.

lookiNG aHead...

We’ve had a great musical summer so far. The choir has been singing their favorite anthems and have a few more to go. “I Choose Jesus”, “The Lighthouse”, and “Jesus What a Mighty Name “ are coming up in August.

We’re preparing to sing October 15 for the Greenville Baptist Association’s 150th anniversary celebration here at BCBC. Church choirs from all over the city will join us to make a 150 voice choir for this celebration.

We’ve begun work on this year’s Christmas At The Creek program in December.

Along with our weekly commitment to worship we’ve got a busy year of music! We’d love to have more singers for the choir and instrumentalists for the orchestra. Come join this year!

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

- Mark 10:45

There are 168 hours in a week. What if a child only hears about Jesus for two hours a week? You could be a huge part of that child learning about Jesus Christ and having a positive experience in church. Please consider being an important person in a child’s growth in their love for Jesus Christ. If you feel called to serve in our preschool department please contact me at 864-915-9669 or [email protected]. We have a larger need during second hour, but still need teachers first hour also. Thanks so much for your consideration.

pareNts, Check out these quotes. I bet you will never be able to guess where all of them came from.

Studies have shown that parents are the primary influence on their children’s choices and decisions….and that is why we’re proud to offer help to parents. Recognizing that parents have the greatest influence on their children’s decisions, the Family talk program helps by encouraging open, honest communication between parents and children.

Nearly 3 out of 4 parents believe their children’s friends and class-mates have the most infulunence...yet contrary to what parents think, kids say mom and dad have the biggest impact on the choices they make.

So you’re between the ages of 13 and 24. What makes you happy? A worried, weary parent might imagine (cont. on next page)

start stroNG, stay stroNGIsn’t it hard to believe that another summer has come and is almost gone? For students another grade has been completed, summer has once again flown by, and the challenge of another school year is on the horizon. Can you believe it? Your baby is moving up to middle or high school, and they are face to face with another school year filled with many new opportunities! Ephesians 6:10 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” This school year we are going to encourage students to start strong and stay strong through the power of the Lord!

I often didn’t take advantage of the God-given oppor-tunities presented to me each new school year. I know this is one of the reasons I have such a passion for youth ministry. I cannot change my past, but I can teach students to learn from my mistakes. I once heard a wise woman say, “God is the great recycler, He uses every-thing.” I challenge students to learn from their mistakes this past school year and move forward to be an effec-tive witness for Christ. Parents, I challenge you to build and edify your kids this school year. Hebrews 3:13 says, “But encourage one another daily, while it is called today, lest you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Don’t forget about our life-changing youth recovery program, Life Hurts God Heals. The Lord is changing lives every Monday night so go to www.brushycreek.org for details on this great program.

Let’s work together this school year to encourage and challenge these students to seize the opportunity of a new school year as a chance to learn, grow, and become more like our Savior! Please stay involved so that you don’t miss out on all the Lord is doing here at BCBC. www.brushycreek.org

Thanks again for the privilege of ministering to our youth!

(cont. from previous page) the answer to sound something like this: sex, drugs, a little rock and roll. Maybe some cash or at least the car keys. Turns out the real answer is quite different. Spending time with family was the top answer to that open-ended question…..Parents are seen as an overwhelmingly positive influ-ence in the lives of most young people. Remarkably, nearly half of teens mention at least one of their parents as a hero.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These command-ments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Well that last one is easy, but what about the others. I know you’re thinking Focus on the Family or some other Christian organization, right? Well, the first quote is from an Anheuser-Busch publication on one of their websites called familytalkonline.com. The second is from MVParents.com, a website of the Coors Brewing Company. The third is from a study conducted by MTV and the Associated Press. Isn’t that crazy? It seems that even “worldly” research points to the fact that parents are the primary influence of their children. This is really funny because for some strange reason the Bible has been proclaiming that parents should be the primary people to train their children for thousands of years.

That is why I am so excited about this year’s upcoming Greenhouse schedule. This year during Greenhouse I have attempted to take some steps to help you begin talking with your student about God. I have done this because I am convinced now more than ever that the main people responsible for the spiritual formation of children are their parents. So, short of you teaching a class, how have I done this? Well, there are two ways. First I will be teaching a class on the book of James and a class on the Baptist Faith and Message. How does this help you? These classes are also being offered for adults. So, all you have to do is take the class for adults and then you and your student can have some common ground in what you are leaning and discuss things at home. It should help to make a very natural way for you to talk and relate to your student about spiritual things. Secondly, during the third session, there are specific classes for guys and dads and girls and moms. I will not teach during this session in hopes that all parents and students will attend these classes together. I think this will be a great time for parents and students to learn together. I know it might be awkward at first but I think it could be very beneficial.

If you already talk with your student about the things of God, I hope this will be just another avenue you can use. If you don’t talk with your student about the things of God, much I hope you will find this small step helpful in starting those types of conversations. Again, as a parent you have way more influence over your child than anyone else. Use your influence. Talk about the Bible with your student.

I am praying for the kids of BCBC that they will be bold witnesses for Christ and use the tools they learned in Kids’ EE to share with their friends who Jesus is and what He has done in their lives. I am praying they will respect their teachers, be kind to their friends and be diligent in their studies. God bless our students, teachers, leaders and schools!
