Quote of the Week
“Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.” – John F Kennedy
Welcome Back I hope all our families enjoyed the break and managed to have some time together doing something different to your usual routines. It was great to see the students return back from holidays with lots of enthusiasm, new haircuts and a few good stories about what they got up to for the 2 weeks. We already have several dates and events filled in on our calendar so the term is promising to be a busy one – Buddy Reading, Parent/Teacher interviews, Jeans for Genes day, Jump Rope for Heart and Father’s Day. It will be all hands on deck for everyone as the weeks of this term roll around, keeping us all very busy.
School Opinion Survey The School Opinion Survey is undertaken each year to obtain opinion information from parents/caregivers, students and school staff to help schools identify what they do well, and how they can improve. Opinions on the school, student learning and student well-being are being sought from parents in all families and a sample of students from each state school. Opinions on the school as a workplace are also sought from all state school staff and principals. Additional questions are included for teaching staff on their confidence to teach and improve student outcomes, while principals are also asked on their confidence to lead the school, including improvements in student outcomes.
This year, the survey will comprise a short number of questions about learning arrangements in Term 2 during the COVID-19 lockdown, as well as a small number of the regular SOS questions that more broadly reflect the entire year.
Participation in the survey is anonymous and you are encouraged to take this opportunity to have your say. The survey form has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online survey will be available until this Friday, 17 July 2020, and should take less than five minutes to complete.
To access the survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser: Parent survey – https://survey.qed.qld.gov.au/form/Parents-HaveYourSay
We thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback to our school.
Parent-Teacher Interviews Parent-Teacher interviews will be held during Week 3 of this term (27th – 31st July). We anticipate that all families will make the most of the opportunity to come in and have conversations with the class teachers. The interviews will provide families and teachers the opportunity to share more child-specific information or answer any questions that might have arisen from Semester 1 reports. Letters will be sent home with students this week, so can families please nominate some suitable times and return notes to the class teachers as soon as possible. We look forward to sharing your child’s achievements with you.
Premier’s Reading Challenge Ready, set, read…A reminder that our school has registered to take part in the 2020 Premier’s reading challenge. The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. In 2019, more than 2.31 million books were read by more than 168,000 Queensland children and students from 937 schools and 386 early childhood centres. The challenge is still open and doesn’t close until the 28th August. Students have their reading sheets to log each book that they finish, so please keep encouraging them to read, read, read!
Natalie Newell, Principal
To date only 11 school families have completed the school opinion survey. We currently have 32 families at our school. Your opinions will provide direction for our school over the coming year…please click on the link and provide your feedback…it’s not too late!
Tuckshop
There will be no tuckshop this week.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
(PBL)
BE RESPECTFUL BE A LEARNER BE SAFE
Behaviour of the week: I take turns
This week in our Positive Behaviour for Learning lessons, the
students are learning about taking turns. This positive
behaviour expectation has Be Respectful focus and it is relevant
to the playground areas of the school. During class time
students will have discussions around the importance of taking
turns and why it is important. They will also discuss strategies
they can implement to ensure there is fairness whilst taking
turns.
Year 4 - 5 - 6 Class - Liz Lindsay Welcome back to Term 3! It is fantastic seeing everyone back
at school and hearing about wonderful holiday adventures.
This term is set to be another big one. In English, we are
listening to and reading literary texts by the same author. We
will compare a short story to a novel by the author, Jackie
French, to identify aspects of author style. For assessment,
students will prepare a response analysing author style in
either the short story or the novel, and participate in a panel
discussion. This will be a new and exciting learning experience
for students and I look forward to watching them engage with
this unit of work. In Maths, we are beginning our unit of work
focusing on fractions. Students have been learning about
equivalent fractions and will begin to explore improper and
mixed number fractions over the coming week. Spelling and
Maths homework will resume in Week 2. These homework
tasks are designed to consolidate students understanding of
concepts learnt throughout the week. Final reminder that
Parent-Teacher interview forms have been sent home this
week. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss student’s
progress. Have a great week and stay warm!
Year 2 - 3 Class - Jess Jones Welcome back! I hope you all had a fantastic break and are
ready to start a new term. This week, we will be reading a new
book by Roald Dahl called “George’s Marvellous Medicine”.
This book will be the basis of our English unit where both Year
2 and 3 will be learning about procedural texts. At the end of
the term, students will create their own procedural multimodal
poster and then present this to the class. I am excited about
this fun and creative unit and I look forward to seeing what
each student can create. In Maths, Year 2 are investigating
numbers beyond 100 and Year 3 are sequencing and
representing 4-digit numbers. This week we also start our new
HASS unit and the Arts where we will be focusing on drama.
Lots of fun ahead for this week!
Kindy - Prep - Year 1 Class - Kara Dawson Welcome back everyone! It is so good to see everyone back at
school and ready to learn. Our focus for English this term are
character descriptions and to improve our reading
comprehension. In Maths, we are beginning to look at time and
how to measure the length and capacity of different objects.
Our Kindies are going to start cooking every Friday starting
from Week 3. A letter will go out with each recipe they will be
creating. Let’s have a fantastic last half of the year.
