He wrote valuable papers on economic science and other subjects; was a linguist of no small attainments; and gave some attention to psychical phenomena.

The honors which he received both at home and abroad in recognition of his services to astronomy are so numerous that only the more important can be given here. He received the Copley, Huyghens, Royal Society and the Bruce Medals; was Commander of the Legion of Honor of France; and was the one native born American since Franklin to be an associate of the Institute of France. He received in 1889 a valuable present from the Czar of Russia, and in 1906 the order Pour le Merite f& Wissenschaften und Kiinste was conferred upon him by the Emperor of Germany who received him with marked distinction while Professor Newcomb was in Europe in the summer of 1908.

While astronomy sustains a great loss by the death of Simon Newcomb, yet his work and his in- fluence have done much to clear the way for further progress and will live in the years to come.
