Audience Profile – Genre: Pop Target Audience: Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why The denotation of the stereotypical target audience for my new pop magazine is going to be teenage girls aged 13-15 because the main theme colours will be pink, which is commonly associated with girls. The celebrities on the front cover will also be famous boy bands/famous pop singers which are also popular to the teenage girls and will possess some ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer). Socio-Economic Needs and why: The denotation of the socio-economic needs of the magazines readership will mainly be girls in the E group because they are all going to be students who will possibly be unemployed. This connotes that they would probably spend their pocket money on the magazine, so I need to make sure the price reflects this potential expectation. Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs According to Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory, the target readership will be able to ‘personally identify’ with the cover star because the celebrities on the front cover will attract the readership of teenage girls as the girls are already fans of the boy band./artist and will want to learn more about them. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the target readership will mainly be known as ‘survivors’ because the magazine will mainly contain boy bands/pop singers who attract teenage girls, therefore the girls will know that they will find something in the magazine that they will enjoy reading.
