Audience Profile – Genre: PunkTarget Audience:

Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and whyThe denotation of the stereotypical target audience for my punk rock magazine is going to be all genders aged 14-25. This is because the main colours will be black, white and red which is often associated with this “rebellious” age-group. The bands and artists on the front cover will be those of the pop-punk genre to appeal to the younger readers as they will recognize them, and punk-rock genre which appeal to the older readers as the fans of the punk-rock are generally slightly older. By using recognizable bands and artists it will attract fans and possess some ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer).

Socio-Economic Needs and why: The denotation of the socio-economic needs of the magazines readership will mainly be both genders in E group as the majority will be students who are possibly unemployed. For this reason they will not have much money which must be reflected in the price.

Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needsAccording to Katz’ Uses and gratifications theory, the target readership will ‘personally identify’ with the cover star. The celebrities on the front cover will attract pre existing fans of the bands and artists and they will be encouraged to buy the magazine to learn more about them. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the target readership will be ‘survivors’ as the magazine will have a consistent brand identity. Therefore they will know that the magazine will always provide them with the information and entertainment they enjoy.

Stereotype(s):A rebellious teen/young adult who enjoys music and conforms to the punk aesthetic of dark clothing, piercings, tattoos etc.
