MANUFACTURERS’ REPRESENTATIVE

Registration for the 2016 CPD exam opens January 4: The Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) designation provides formal recognition of outstanding professionals with advanced skills in the design and specification of plumbing systems, and the 2016 exam will be held at testing sites around the country on March 30 and April 1. To learn more about the program and eligibility, go to aspe.org/CPD.ASPE seeks presentation proposals for the 2016 ASPE Convention and Exposition: The 2016 ASPE Convention and Exposition is being held in Phoenix on October 28-November 2, and ASPE is looking for technical education session proposals on a variety of plumbing system design topics. To be considered, go to aspe.org/CallforPresenters by February 1 to submit your presentation.

Latest news from the Plumbing Engineer Publication, Vol. 43, No. 12, December 2015:California’s underground movement to save water By Steve Smith:Steve is wrote about the California drought. After almost five years of a desolate drought, could the arrival of El Nino, with predictions of rain so heavy that mudslides and flooding would be the norm, sound like salvation. Also mention about this El Nino is label as “Godzilla” El Niño.

In his article, he explain about the four different kind of drought. Unfortunately, California has had all four classifications of drought for several years. As a result, even El Nino-sized rains may not be enough to pull the state out of its drought. It is very interest to read and we recommend that all Californian should read.

That is all for this month. See you all in next meeting.

As usual, do not hesitate to e-mail any board member for any particular topics that you may want to see in any of our technical programs. Also check our Technical Calendar for upcoming Technical Sessions.

Registration of plumbing engineers

As you know, ASPE national is working diligently, to prepare for application of registration for Plumbing Engineers, in all 50 States. This process will take several years to succeed. But as the old proverb is saying: “in order to move a mountain you should start with a few rocks”.

We envision a few “hard rocks” to conquer, but if we are united in our demand we will succeed.

At this time, a schedule of tasks is completed and a “Plumbing Engineering working group” was formed with the main scope to prepare a college level curriculum and a test with questions, primarily related to Plumbing Engineering. PE working group is composed of ASPE members, from various chapters, with broad experience.

PE working Group will communicate thru emails and scheduled internet conferences.

I am honored to be part of the PE working Group and we will keep you posted of our activities.

MEMBERSHIP REPORTJohn ZagorskiV.P. Membership

Please help me in welcoming Manny Jimenez & Eric Ashley both from Navien and Sothol Roeung who transferred to LA from the Florida chapter as new LA Chapter members. We still need all of your help in bringing new members into the chapter. I’m still running the same membership drive program. It’s simple, sponsor a new member, and bring them to one of our monthly dinner meetings with their application & payment, and the chapter will pay for both of your meals for that meeting. Let’s keep the momentum going!

I have a limited supply of ASPE 50 year anniversary pins left over from the Chicago convention. If you do not already have one, please see me at any of our monthly dinner meetings and I will be happy to give you a pin. These will be given away on a first come first served basis until they are gone! So, I guess if you do not read t newsletter, you do not get a pin!

A Surprising Number Of Americans Don't Have A Toilet

But most of us do, while 949 million people around the world definitely don'tBy Brian Patrick Byrne and Kaitlyn Kelly on Nov 19, 2015 at 2:36 PM

Happy World Toilet Day! Rejoice as you read this article on your phone, maybe even while sitting comfortably on a modern, porcelain toilet, which flushes with water so crystalline clean you could, in hard times, drink it without too much fear of dying. (We do not recommend doing that, by the way.)

Going to the toilet wasn’t always such a pleasant, risk-free experience for everyone, and even today, many people in America still go without proper sanitation. As recently as 1990, the rural stereotype of dropping trou in a shack out back was a reality for more than 1.1 million American households. If you think that’s a lot of people, here’s a little math for you. That represented 0.04 percent of the U.S. population back in 1990. Right here in 2015, a full 13 percent of the entire world’s population are still living without access to an improved sanitation facility and are forced to defecate in the open. That’s close to a billion people.

The problem overwhelmingly affects sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, but Census data shows 1,136,157 U.S. households were still using outhouses in 1990 because they lacked access to a public or private sewer or septic tank. In 2014, almost half a million U.S. households still did not have complete plumbing facilities, defined as having access to all of these items: hot and cold running water, a toilet that flushes and a shower or bathtub.

We don’t have national data on outhouses any more—the last time Americans were asked about where their ablutions ended up was 25 years ago, in 1990. Back then, a massive 12 percent of Alaskan households, or 27,817 homes, admitted they used an outhouse to do their dirty work. Vast, chilly Alaska had almost three times more outhouses per capita than any other state. Next in line was West Virginia, where 4.4 percent of all households used an outhouse, followed by 3.8 percent in Kentucky.

The U.S. Census Bureau did not ask Americans about their septic system in the 2000 or 2010 Census, an Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson told Vocativ in an email, but the 2014 American Community Survey—which used a sample of 55,000 households—allowed them estimate that 480,278 did not have complete plumbing facilities. An estimated 3.8 percent or 9,544 Alaskan households had no plumbing at all in 2014, accounting for the highest amount of American homes per capita that couldn’t even pour a glass of water. At the opposite side of the U-bend was Florida, where just 0.2 percent of households in each state were without running water in 2014.
