LEGISLATIVE REPORTKOOK DEANV.P. Legislative

Starting the New Year with an update on the energy efficiency standards for residential water heaters:http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/appliance_standards/product.aspx/productid/27

New energy efficiency mandates from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will take effect on April 16, 2015. They require higher energy factor (EF) ratings on virtually all residential water heating products including gas-fired, oil-fired, electric, tabletop, instantaneous gas-fired and instantaneous electric. Tankless systems already exceed these EF requirements, and all other water heating products manufactured before the DOE mandates take effect can still be bought and installed after the changeover date.

Residential water heaters must comply with the amended standards found in the Code of Federal Regulations, 10 CFR 430.32(d) , by April 16, 2015. This information is also in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations.

President: continued from page 1interesting topics, but there’s only so much he can do. When I was VT tech I have to say finding speakers that would hold your attention was the hardest thing. So if you have any suggestions please contact Thura.

The ASPE LA, Orange County Golf TournamentChris and his golf tournament committee is doing a great job. They have had quite a few meetings. A lot of great ideas have come up during these meetings and once we have nailed down a few things I will share with you what we have in store for you this year. I think this year is going to be over the top. You can find the flyer in this month’s newsletter so please plan ahead and sign up for your foursomes, or get your sponsorship forms sent in. For anyone wanting to put a foursome together please get your form in with your check to Chris as soon as you can. FYI we are taking signups on a first come first serve bases. We are accepting 144 entries on the first come bases and an additional 8 golfers to make a total of 152. So it’s important to everyone to get your sponsorship forms completed and sent in and your foursomes put together as soon as you can. The final 8 spots will come at a premium at $175.00 per person. For the sponsorships we are only asking for your form to be sent in at this time, we will collect your money next year as we get closer to the event. The beverage carts will be running again for all to keep hydrated with the beverage of your chose. If you have suggestions of things you would like to see happen during the event please let us know. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for event updates.

I would like to thank Lubrizol and (Sloan Valves) Delco sales for stepping up again as Platinum Sponsors. If you have received a sponsorship form from myself or one of the other golf committee members please get it filled out and sent back in. We are going to add a pull down tab in our website for Platinum sponsors this year with a link to your website. So even more reason to step up to the platinum level.

The ASPE LA Fishing tripSo the fishing trip is officially in motion. During the last board meeting your board decided to change the deadline info a little. We have decided to look at the income for this event at our May meeting. What we are going to look at during our May board meeting is if we have enough at this time to change the trip to a 1 ½ day trip. If we have collected enough my May to do a short trip we will do this instead of canceling the trip. As you all know last year the chapter was on the hook for a lot of money because some people could not make the event. So if you sign up for the trip, rather you

go or not you will be required to pay for that spot or find someone to fill your spot. They had a great time last year check out the Facebook page for all the photos of the event. I have a feeling this trip will fill up fast so contact Scott Steindler as soon as you can. You should be able to find the flyer with all the info in this month’s newsletter.

The ASPE LA Product showThe product show is on. We are still working on some final details one being the location. As soon as we have the location we will have a flyer on the event in the newsletter. So keep an eye out next month’s newsletter.

The ASPE LA websiteThe website is getting a face lift. We have launched a new website with some simply content for now. Our old website had a lot of clutter within it in the background causing some issues, so we have had our web designer working on getting us back online with something that is a more up to date. I had a meeting with Brian and his designer on Monday. We are making a few changes to the new website to give it a better look and more functionality. Keep an eye out in the coming months for the changes. Also if there’s something you would like to see that we do not have covered please let us know.

The ASPE LA FacebookI know I’m a broken record but we are trying to get more people on the Facebook page. So please visit and sign up on the ASPE LA Facebook (ASPE Los Angeles). All of our event pictures will be posted on our Facebook page along with updates to our events.

Until next month

WPC Research Data Base

World Plumbing Council (WPC) announced that the Research Data Base is available on website, for review by interested parties.

WPC is an international organization formed to promote word wide, the new research and accomplishments of new technologies of plumbing industry. The main reason for this program is to inform interested parties of the ongoing research and the results of new technologies applied to various plumbing issues. This program will help researchers to know what projects are already completed and what other projects are still in the testing phase. It is evident that this program will reduce duplication of the research efforts.

In the past the same research was done simultaneous in different Countries without the knowledge of the research under way in another Country.

This Data Research Base will provide information of various research projects across the world. To review this Research Data Base, visit WPC home page, and click on “Research”.

MEMBERSHIP REPORTJohn ZagorskiV.P. Membership

I have one new member to announce at this time, Christopher Yang from Buro Happold Engineers in Los Angeles who transferred his membership from the New York chapter. We hope to see you all at our next dinner meeting on Wednesday January 7th 2015 at Monterey Hill Restaurant in Monterey Park.

I have a limited supply of ASPE 50 year anniversary pins from the Chicago convention. If you do not already have one, please see me at any of our monthly dinner meetings and I will be happy to give you a pin. These will be given away on a first come first served basis until they are gone. I guess if you don’t read the newsletter, you don’t get a pin!

The Founding Chapter, our Los Angeles Chapter needs your help! Our membership has dropped over the last couple of years from around 210 down to 183 and I’m sorry to say this is not the way to get us to another 50

Since 1913, Leonard Valve Company has been the quality leader in the manufacture of thermostatic water mixing valves. All Leonard valves are factory preassembled and tested before shipment, and we offer a complete range of products to meet all of your temperature control requirements, including 3rd part approved lead free valves. We also offer ASSE 1070 approved valves with an industry low 0.25 GPM minimum flow.

years in existence. I am still running the new member program wherein if & when you sponsor or mentor a new member and bring them to our dinner meeting with a filled out application & payment, the chapter will pay for both of your dinners for that night! Who ever passes up a free meal? My personal thanks to all who have taken advantage of this program in the past, please keep the cards & letters coming!

The Society is very concentrated on getting the younger engineering community involved in ASPE as the average age of our membership base nation wide is 57. Time for all of us old guys & gals to start mentoring our younger counterparts to get involved & engaged in our organization to ensure we will be around another 50 years!

Should anyone need a current membership application, please do not hesitate to contact me as your VP Membership @ [email protected]. You’re also welcome to call @ 562-556-7575.

I hope to see you all next week @ Monterey Hill for our monthly dinner meeting!

Supplement your studies for the CPD exam with ASPE's webinar seriesFour-part series will help exam takers prepare by discussing the five task segments involved in a plumbing engineer's job dimensions--gathering information, administration, design, specifications, and construction services--from which all 100 exam questions are derived. Each webinar includes sample questions as well as insight on how to best prepare to pass the exam. Registration for the series is open until March 12.

Share your expertise in ASPE Journal If you’d rather share your expertise in a technical article, ASPE is now taking submissions and proposals for the 2015 issues of ASPE Journal. Articles should be in-depth, nonproprietary technical discussions on topics of interest to plumbing designers. Contact [email protected] to submit an article or proposal.
