Program: The Pitfalls of a Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly Installation

Speaker: Jon A. Everett-Technical Services Manager, Zurn Wilkins)

So I have been working with the CPMCA and it looks like we might be doing some joint ventures in the near future. The first event will be a K1 Sport karting event. The CPMCA tried putting this together a few months ago and didn’t have enough people to support the event. So my thought was let’s challenge the plumbing contractors to a race. So I have thrown the gauntlet down. I hope we can put on other events together

in the future. I think this is a great way for the plumbers and the engineers to find a command ground and get to know each other on a personal means. Also don’t forget to but on your calendar the date for the 2016 ASPE National Convention October 28th to Nov 1st in Phoenix Arizona. You should all plan on dressing up on Halloween night. We need to make this event one that no one forgets. This event is almost in our back yards so let’s fill this convention with Los Angeles ASPE members.

Latest news from the Plumbing Engineer Publication, Vol. 44, No. 4, April 2016:

Engineers research feasibility of flushing toilets withrainwaterBySteveSmith:Steve is writing about the using of treated water to flushing toilets. Flushing is the largest single use of household water consumption in the U.S. so all that purified water is wasted in toilet bowls. The rain water harvesting is the best alternate for toilet flushing. This article is interesting to read. But be careful, for commercial we need to treat the water before flushing toilet and some jurisdiction required coloring the water too.

Coming month is the election month and any LA members, who interest run the Board position, please contact current president Bill.

SHORT HISTORY OF TOILET.

This common fixture it is known all over the world under various names: John,Crapper, water closet, toilet, bathroom, can, washroom, pot, powder room, head, throne, etc. I don’t believe that there is any other plumbing fixture, in use today, which will have so many names.

FACES.

Faces = matter eliminated by the bowel by people and animals = poop

An average person eliminates approximately 400 lbs. of faces/year. But persons with a vegetarian diet can eliminate up to 700 lbs. of faces/year.

Compared with other living thinks: an elephant can eliminate approximately 25,000 lbs of faces/year.

Composition of faces:• 75% unused water• 10% indigestible food (fiber)• 10% dead bacteria• 5% live bacteria and excess food the body didn’t use

TOILET PAPER

After going to toilet it was, and it is necessary to wipe your bottom.

It is obvious that in the ancient time 2000-3000 years ago, the toilet paper was not invented, and people used various ways to wipe their bottom. For instance they were using: grass, sand, corn cobs, seaweed, etc. During the Roman times,2000 years ago, the communal bathroom consisted of a marble slab with holes, where people were sitting next to each other (no partitions). They were using a bucket with sea water and a stick. At one end of the stick was attached a sponge.

After usage the stick was returned into the bucket, to be available for the next person. Of course, they were not aware, that the stick used by several people could transmit viruses from one person to the other. Life was simple but short!

After 1440, when Johannes Guttenberg, invented the printing press, with the development of printers, the demand for paper was growing exponentially, and by 1500, publication of daily papers became a routine in many large Cities. The old printed papers become a natural attribute in every bathroom.

I remember, that when I was young, we had in the bathroom, pieces of old news papers, cut on 10x10 inches, and use them as toilet paper. The same happen today in many underdeveloped countries.

Muslims are very specific on bottom cleaning, every time after using the bathroom. They don’t use paper. They use worm water. If you ever design plumbing for buildings scheduled to be used by Muslims, your should know, thatIn each bathroom your should specify a hose bibb with worm water and a floor drain. Or you should provide a bidet. USA flushes down yearly, approximately 7.2 billion of rolls of toilet paper, which require approximately 200,000 trees.

Based upon the latest archeological discoveries, the first flushing toilet, dated 17th Century BC, was in the palace of King Minos in the island of Crete, in Mediterranean Sea. King Minos palace was equipped with bathtubs, hot and cold water, toilets with running water and sewer systems. These fixtures were affordable only for rich people or people from the upper class.

Next historical data regarding toilets, is from the Roman Empire. Romans were an example of engineering marvels including aqueducts to bring water to the Cities, underground sewer systems as Cloaca Maxima, built in 8th Century BC, to provide waste water disposal for Rome.

The Romans were aware of the importance of sanitation and fresh unpolluted water for the safety of their citizens. In Rome, the famous baths of Thermae of Caracalla, had public toilets with running water, pools with hot and cold water, steam baths and places to relax. The complex was built in Rome during 212-217 AD, by Emperor Caracalla. These facilities were open for all citizens. The ruins of these facilities are still available now, and you can visit them in your next trip to Italy.

Unfortunately the Roman civilization, which started in 8th Century BC, ended in 5th Century AD, and was replaced by new rules of order imposed by the barbaric tribes, who conquered Rome. After the fall of Rome, 5th Century AD, all sanitation rules and practices were ignored or forgotten.

It is difficult to explain, how from this well organized Roman State Empire, the sanitation rules, culture, science, production of goods and entire Roman way of life, changed to the worst.

From 500 to about 1500 AD, Western civilization enters a period called “Middle Ages” or ”Dark Ages”. Lack of sanitation and poor transportation of potable water allowed spreading of terrible diseases and plagues, which wiped out a large portion of Europe’s population. Moreover, population started to live in congested towns, close to each other and new rules of sanitation and water distribution were necessary. During this period chamber pots were common used, and the contents were usually thrown in the streets. This procedure was helping the spread of diseases and resulted in a foul smell from decomposition of human waste.

In the rural areas, most dwelling had a “privy” with a cesspit, built near the house. The waste was collected in the cesspit and when the cesspit was full, the solids were collected and used as fertilizer.

At the end of “Middle Ages” period, the scientific community made finally a connection between diseases and poor sanitation. As a result new laws were enacted to prohibit waste water to be thrown into the streets. Took another 100 years to install underground public sewers. In the mean time the toilet was redesigned and provided with a tank for flushing the bowl. In 1596, in England, Sir John Harington, designed and built a flush toilet with a water tank. This toilet was installed in Queen Elisabeth I, Richmond Palace. The toilet was working, but no other similar toilet was produced. It took about 200 years for a similar device to be reinvented.

As part of the history of toilet, should be mentioned Thomas Crapper. He was an experienced inventor and manufacturer of plumbing ware., but he didn’t invent the toilet. The toilets manufactured by his factories were stamped with the name “Crapper”, Some people assumed, in error, that he was the inventor of the toilet. But this is another story, for a future article.

In 1775 the flush toilet was reinvented, by Alexander Cummings who patented the toilet in England. From England, the flush toilet spread slowly in other European countries and eventually in the new colonies in America. Now, the shape of the bowl, the flushing mechanism and the finish of the fixture is changed somehow from the original, but the operation principles, are the same.

Today many regions of the world experience long periods of drought. California is not an exception. Consecutive droughts of the last 4 years, depleted the reserve of underground water and water in the lakes and rivers are getting low.

Local jurisdictions are trying to improve the situation by ordinances and Code revisions, which will promote the use of water saving plumbing fixtures and change the behavior of the consumers. Another incentive is by penalizing consumers for using more water than the average.

These actions will save water, but not enough to resolve the basic condition of providing more water.

Presently, the toilet was completely redesigned to keep up with the trend to conserve water.

Before 1990, toilets were designed to use 5-6 gal. per flush. In 1992 an EPA regulation mandated water savings toilets with 3.5 gal. per flush. Later the EPA regulations mandated toilets with 1.6 gal. per flush. And today City ordinances in many jurisdictions, require toilets with 1.28 gal per flush. Based upon preliminary tests made recently by PERC, toilets with flushing rates below 1.28 gal. per flush will not be acceptable.

In other words, the toilets we use today require 4 gal.per flush, less water compared with the toilets we used in 1990. This is a lot of water saved. This fixture is a specific example of the efficiency of a simple and effective way to get rid of human waste and other garbage we throw in the bowl.

After throwing in the bowl, feces, urine, paper, waste water and “god knows what”, with a simple activation of a lever or button, all the garbage collected in the bowl is flushed down the drain, and is flowing in the waste pipes outside the facility, and eventually will reach the waste water treatment plant where the solids and liquid are separated. What happen after the waste water treatment plant will be discussed in a future article.

With all the effort, to redesign existing plumbing fixtures for conservation, we still have about 2 billion people, all over the world, with no sanitation and no sources of safe drinking water. To provide water and sewer infrastructure for all these people is a monumental undertaking with an astronomical price.

As an alternate, it was proposed to reinvent a new toilet which will not require water or sewer or septic tank. The new toilet shall be: easy to build and maintain, be hygienic and sustainable, operational cost about $ 0.05 per use, don’t discharge pollutants, generate energy, clear water and minerals. The design should be used by single family customers.

Money for design and a prototype of this reinvented toilet is secured from grants from various Foundations and organizations. Eight Universities received grants for this research/competition. We are awaiting the result of the competition..

Today the market offers toilets with heated seats, toilets with built in hot water spray jets and blow dryers, shredder toilets, toilets made of china or stainless steel, toilets made specifically for handicap persons, small kids toilets, toilets for astronauts to operate at zero gravity force, toilets to operate with vacuum drainage systems, where waste water can flow down or up to the point of collection.

John, throne, water closet, toilet (and any other names you want to identify yourself). You have come a long way, and we are still working for your improvement.
