JAPANLong cloaked in mystery as a result of being autarchic and insular, Japanese civilization has followed a truly unique path. In the Land of the Rising Sun, the pace is set by both the frenetic energy of the country’s major cities with their unique architecture, and the serenity of its gardens, whose secrets are guarded by majestic scarlet ”Torii”. From Tokyo to Osaka, the new beating heart of the country, through to romantic Kyoto; from sacred gardens to ancient sanctuaries, secular temples, and the delicate landscapes of Nara, Japan offers you fascinating and unique experiences. Eager for progress and enriched by its medieval past, the former Empire of Japan has an exceptionally refined culture.

Do not miss the opportunity to discover extraordinary Shanghai, the cosmopolitan and extroverted megalopolis, known as the New York of Asia for its essential role in understanding the China of today. VIETNAMA fascinating journey to a part of Asia that is both close and familiar due to a shared past, to the nostalgic memories of beautiful Indochina... We invite you to discover the splendours and mysteries of the country with two deltas. Surrounded by the Gulf of Thailand, the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea, Vietnam seems to have sailed through time without suffering its effects. This land of legendary beauty, whose shape is reminiscent of a dragon, will reveal to you its sumptuous landscapes such as its tiered rice paddies, the glittering mirrors of the jagged mountain ranges, and its lush jungle. You will discover the 1,650 km-long coastline that inspired the novels of Marguerite DURAS and whose past, during which mingled kings, heroines and divinities, now influences an exceptional cultural diversity. At the crossroads of a long and rich history, succumb to the charm of its idyllic natural sites, its lively traditional towns and its refined cuisine. A trip to Vietnam is a delight for the spirit and the senses, offering stunning scenery, a feeling of calm and wonder and, above all, remarkable cultural enrichment.

Major sites: • Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh & Saigon River: Hong Kong - Ho Chi Minh, see page 19.

INDONESIALike a pearl necklace set against a coral backdrop, the Indonesian archipelago’s 18,000 islands are dotted between Asia and the Pacific Ocean, over some 5,000 km from East to West. A fascinating melting pot of mysterious cultures and inexhaustible reserve of natural resources. Some one thousand years ago, Indonesia became the destination of choice for merchant ships coming from China, attracted by the hidden treasures of the archipelago. A popular destination since time immemorial, successive waves of peoples have landed on its shores, including Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, and Dutch, bringing new influences and lifestyles to the archipelago. Although the sea has played a decisive role in transforming the Indonesian civilization, the earth and its volcanoes have also contributed to shaping its identity, by way of the fertile lava on which lush rice fields have been planted. But Indonesia has even more to offer its visitors: its way of life and ancestral traditions give it a unique aspect where harmony prevails.

Inhabited by tribes living in near-autarky, Papua promises rich encounters and the discovery of a robust culture where the methods of hunting and fishing coupled with the animalist rituals promise a journey that is out of the ordinary. MALAYSIAA natural gem with unrivalled landscapes, surrounded on either side by the Strait of Malacca and the China Sea, Malaysia is divided into two regions: Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. The second, to the North of Borneo, offers pristine landscapes and a fascinating return to nature. You will explore authentic villages and a world of legends that tell how the world began. With its turquoise sea, magnificent sunsets, mysterious mangroves, wild islands and crystal-clear waters, Malaysia has inspired 20th century literature as the setting for exciting adventures featuring pirates and sultans. Lastly, Malaysia’s ancient jungle is the realm of the nomadic indigenous people and its stunning nature is home to unique animals found nowhere else in the world. A gracious country whose silhouette forms the outline of a dragon, Vietnam offers travellers the splendour of its landscapes and its fragrant trading posts. Cruises aboard Le Soléal will take you as far as hectic Hanoi, then on to splendid Ha Long Bay, culminating in Ho Chi Minh City, a famous metropolis undergoing rapid development. Throughout this journey, let Indochina work its magic on you, with its ancestral traditions and its lush natural environment.

SAIGON RIVER Bordering the former colonial district in the East of the city, the Saigon River gives Ho Chi Minh the image of a city that embraces its Delta and is open to the world. A majestic waterway located in Southern Vietnam, it takes its source near Phum Daung in the South-East of Cambodia, before meeting the Nhà Bè, to the South of the city. From the gardens that have been built along the Ton Duc Thang avenue, do not miss the ceaseless ballet of the fragile looking skiffs that sail their way past the huge cargo ships coming from Hong Kong and Taïwan. Enjoy the strains of traditional Vietnamese music and be seduced by the splendid scenery along the riverbanks.

HAIPHONG - HANOIKnown as the “Rising Dragon”, the capital of Vietnam has maintained a poetic aspect and a nostalgic charm. The rapid urbanization of the city, a blend of past and present, has produced a new city of remarkable diversity. In Hanoi, you can find the mythical city of temples and pagodas, a trading city with its narrow streets and also a dreamy city with the mirror of its lakes. In Vietnamese, Hanoi means “the city between rivers” and it is the capital of the country, located in the North on the banks of the Red River. The historic dragon of Vietnam, elegant, refined Hanoi is revealing itself, with its European aspects and its Eastern air. Do not miss the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the very beautiful One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature, dedicated to Confucius.

CHAN MAY - HUEA UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hue is proud of its past and the regal origins of its ancestors. A picturesque city when the weather is fine, Hue is shrouded in mystery on less glorious days. The former capital of the Nguyen dynasty nestles in a bend in the Perfume River which flows in a valley between lush green hills. A number of landmarks testify to its former grandeur - you can visit the Imperial City, nestled within the walls of the Citadel and opposite the imposing Flag Tower, or the Thien Mu pagoda, who hurls his frail silhouette towards the sky. Further, discover the mausoleum of the Tu Duc emperor. Like all sovereigns, the Nguyen emperors were concerned with the eternity of their life on the other side, and they paid particular attention to the construction of their mausoleum.

DA NANG - HOI AN Lulled by the quite waters of the Thu Bon River, Hoi An seems to slumber under a spell that made time stand still. This former port city was very prosperous in the 15th century, and rich merchants based their trading posts there, building sturdy wooden houses in bright colours with roofs of ceramic tiles. A sleepy and charming village will transport you back through the centuries to a time where sampans supplied the surrounding markets with a thousand and one products, perfumes and flavours. A wander through its car-free streets is the best way to travel through time and discover this gentle nostalgia which has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Long considered as the refuge of the famous Bugis and Makassar pirates, on the spice route from the West to the East, this island chain with its thousand shades of green and blue offers its visitors long beaches of golden sand, high mountain chains and immense terraced paddy fields. SANDAKAN NATIONAL PARK Since the beginning of the 20th century, the oldest tropical rainforest in the World has been protected within the national parks of Malaysia. It’s at the heart of one of these natural heritage sites, Sandakan National Park in Sabah, situated in the North-West of Borneo, that you will set out to explore primitive landscapes and experience a natural and unique adventure. This oldgrowth forest is one of the richest kaleidoscopes of flora and fauna, including the famous Orang-Utan, whose name means “man of the forest” in Malay. The latter is the only Asian representative of the great apes and is easily recognizable by its long arms and its flamboyant orange fur. Particularly impressive, like their cousins the Gorillas and Chimpanzees, Orang-Utans are capable of using tools and learning simple languages through signs. Aside from mothers and their young, Orang-Utans are a solitary species that spend most of their life swinging from the tops of tall trees. Treat yourself to this thrilling encounter and a fascinating adventure back to nature, in pristine scenery from the beginning of time.

CORON ISLANDLocated at the heart of the Philippines, Coron Island is like an emerald laid onto a turquoise backdrop, fringed with coconut palms and dark limestone cliffs. TOKYOIf Japan is a country with a unique culture combining secular traditions and leading edge technologies, nowhere is this more evident than in Tokyo. The Japanese love to say that in this city “the present clings to the past yet flirts continuously with the future”. A city in perpetual movement, Tokyo draws visitors into a whirlwind of sensations, odours, and noises that are unfamiliar and fascinating. During your cruise, we offer you a unique chance to visit the heart of the most bustling of capitals, offering unique contrasts from futuristic towers to ancient sanctuaries, hip neighborhoods to vast green spaces, suit- clad businessmen to young women in traditional attire. Allow yourself to fall under its unalterable charm and its old- time atmosphere and make the most of its ancestral traditions and its many World Heritage monuments.

SHIMIZU - NIHONDAIRA PARKAt the foot of Mount Fuji, over twenty or so hectares where tea plantations grow alongside fields of bamboo, the Nihondaira Natural Park is a kingdom. Overlooking the city of Shimizu, the vegetation forms a natural sound barrier, and only birdsong disturbs the serene silence. From this verdant idyll, where the wide emerald vales offer a picture postcard setting, the majestic silhouette of the most beautiful volcano in the world culminates at 3,775 meters: in the pantheon of sacred mountains in Japan, Mount Fuji is the master. Do not miss the elegant profile of this solitary, snow-capped cone, a magnificent natural location, listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

KAGOSHIMA In Kagoshima Bay, not far from the Sakurajima volcano, lies a sun-kissed city and a horizon of the most astonishing palette of blues: Kagoshima. This charming ancient fortified town lies in the South of Kyushu Island and is known as the ”Naples of the East” because of its abundant sunshine, blue skies and the beauty of the surrounding Ocean. Mount Sakurajima was once an island in its own right, but the eruption of the volcano of the same name caused its landmass to join up with Kyushu when the lava filled in the strait that separated them. This still active volcano dominates the city and has become the symbol of it.

SAKAIMINATO - Samourai culture Situated at the tip of the Yumigahama peninsula, Sakaiminato is a small Japanese city dating from the 20th century and covering some 28km². Great feudal lords and valiant warriors, the Samurais built sumptuous homes and castles. As these treatments are in great demand, we recommend you book them at the same time as your cruise. For more information, please see our

Beauty Spa Collection broch ure available from www.ponant.com.
