What is fraction?

` A number represent part of a whole.

` It is a ratio of two whole numbers (one wholenumber divided by another whole number.

` It consists of numerator (top of fraction) and

denominator (bottom of fraction).

` Example:

` Proper fraction (pecahan wajar) Numerator is smaller than denominator

` Improper fraction (pecahan tak wajar) Numerator is larger than denominator 5/3

` Equivalent fraction (Pecahan setara) Two fractions have the same value.

` Mixed Fraction (Nombor bercampur Consists of a whole number and a proper fraction.

` Divide the numerator by the denominator.` Write down the whole number answer ` Then write down any remainder above the

denominator.

` Example: convert 11/4 to a mixed fraction

11÷ 4 = 2 with a remainder of 3

` Multiply the whole number part by the denominator.

` Add that to the numerator.

` Then write the result on top of the denominator.

` Example: convert 2 ¾ to an improper fraction

Multiply 3 x 4 = 12

Addition 12 + 3 = 15

Then, write down the answer 17/5



` Find the (greatest) common divisor of the

numerator and denominator, and divide both by it.

` E.g.,4/8 = ½ (common divisor = 4)

12/36 = 1/3 (common divisor = 3,4,6,12, choose the

greatest one)
