Liking and commenting is quick and easy.

Engagement is much more than Facebook and Twitter. 58x Facebook and 120x Twitter.
You do not have to spend money to get your followers to see your posts like Facebook. Even with the new Instagram algorithm all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.

Think of Instagram like lots of individual magazines that are focused on a specific problem or subject.

If you want people to follow you then you’ll need to make it as easy as possible for them to do so.
This is one platform that you are better having a separate personal account and business account. You can set your personal account to private, but your business account needs to be public. Otherwise, people won’t be able to see what you’re posting and won’t follow you.

Your username and display name are searchable so think carefully about what you choose.
Try to use the same username on all social media platforms so that people can easily find you elsewhere.
If you're an entrepreneur your name is always a good option.
Using keywords in your industry is another option.
Your display needs to say something about what you do.

You only have 150 characters to create an eye catching bio.
It needs to give the viewer an idea about who you are, what you do and what they will see if they follow you.
It is the only place in Instagram where links are clickable. Use it wisely.
Include a call-to-action/ link to where you want to send people to. Ideally your email list page.
Use a Bitly link on your profile so you can track click through rates. By tracking click through rates you can see what's working and what's not.

A good profile is important because it’s what people see in their notifications. It also gives your feed the personal touch.
You can only change your profile image in the phone app.
A professionally shot image of you smiling is ideal.
If it's a company with other people then a logo is ok.
Ideal size is 110 x 110 minimum.
It shows as a circular image.
Having a background colour will help it stand out.

Instagram needs to be part of a bigger plan. Even if you grow lots of engaged followers that means nothing if you can't convert them into clients/customers.
Have a plan in which you:
Build credibility and trust with your prospects
Build brand awareness
Build your email list

People will follow you depending on the type of content you share.
Think about the type of content your ideal client would want to see that is relevant to your brand.
Images that work best are those that invoke an emotional reaction
Brand and create your own images (add your website or username)

Videos are huge on social media right now.
You can record videos in the Instagram app or upload a pre-recorded one.
Videos need to be rendered in a square ratio
You can only upload from the library on your phone or file sharing platform.
Instagram Stories are another way to share photos, videos (live or pre-recorded).

Hashtags are so important because they are searchable. It's the main way to get seen by people who aren’t following you. If they like your image then they might start following you.
Use up to 30 hashtags - I use about 18
Hashtags are searchable
Use a mix of popular hashtags and some less popular more niche specific hashtags.
Combine words that relate to your industry, life and location.
Use the Instagram explore tab to find new hashtags.
There are websites like hashtagify.me that will give you some ideas.

Let people know you're on Instagram and that you’d like to connect with them there. Share your Instagram link on your other social media platforms, by email or in person.

Focus on giving value rather than selling. Think about what your customers are going to want to see. If they wanted to see product after product they’d go to your shop instead.
People are not on Instagram to be sold to. They will unfollow you if that's ALL you do.

Some experts say that Instagram is not a follow for follow platform, but personally I believe social media works by it being a two-way relationship.
How to find people to follow?
Look for people that could be your target audience or search by a hashtag that your audience is using.
Look for people that are commenting and liking images that are similar to what you share.
Follow them then engage with them. Like three of their
posts and comment on one.

Instagram allows you to search by location. So if your business has a physical location or if you are out and about this is a great opportunity to get seen by people searching in this way.
You can do this by adding a geotag or
by adding your location to the
hashtags you use.

Direct messages are a great way to connect one on one. Don't send a generic message to everyone. Make it personal. Focus on building the relationship further rather than talking about your product straight away.

Let people know who you are and what you're about on a personal level. Explain why you do what you do. Your challenges and obstacles that you’ve faced (or are facing) in your personal and business life are great for helping you connect with others.
Only share what you're comfortable with sharing and don't do too many personal images which will detract away from your message and brand.

Analyse the time and type of posts that get the most engagement. If you have a business account you can use the analytics in Instagram. Alternatively, there are apps that you can use including:
