WHAT A WONDERFUL TERM!

What a wonderful term! I continue to be amazed and inspired by the depth and breadth of faith and learning experiences that occur here at Gleeson College and I wish to thank all staff, students and parents for your engagement and support of our school. There is such an air of excitement, energy and positivity around our school at present. It really is a great time to be a part of this community.

I wish to thank the students for their efforts in Term 1 - it has been a great start to 2018. I trust that you are all well on your way to achieving the goals you have set for yourself this year. Our Year 12 students are almost a third of the way through your year, which is a sobering point. What I do deeply appreciate about our Year 12s is all that they add to Gleeson College – they are a very generous group of young people who give to our community in immeasurable ways – and for that, I sincerely thank them. Our Year 7 and 8 students have also brought a great deal to Gleeson College. All of our new students have really impressed with their attitude and work ethic, and as a collective, have made a great start to their journey here at Gleeson.

Thank you also to our committed teaching and ESO staff. It has been a long

and busy term, but staff have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and professionalism, always with the best interests of the young people in their care at the core of their work. We say farewell to staff members Ms Kirsty Jeffree, who for the remainder of this year will be working as a Curriculum Specialist for Languages with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority; and Mr Jordan Glover who completes his contract with us.

Thank you to the parents that have supported the College in Term 1, and in particular for your attendance and engagement at the Parent Teacher Interviews held over the past two weeks. Your willingness to work with us, and to encourage and support your children, is

a crucial aspect of what we do.

Last Wednesday all of our Year 7 students, along with our Choir attended the annual Memorial Mass remembering Archbishop James Gleeson, Archbishop Andrew Killian and Bishop Phillip Kennedy at St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral. This is always an important event for our school to engage with, as we honour the person that our College is named after. In this our 30th year, we thought is important to immerse our new Year 7 students in this Mass, and they were wonderful ambassadors for Gleeson College (see photos).

Finally, I take this opportunity to remind families that the College staff will be involved in a Professional Learning Day on Monday 30 April, and as such, it is a Student Free Day. The College Front Office will open on this day at 12.30pm. Term 2 begins for all students on Tuesday 1 May, when we will begin the term by celebrating a whole College Mass in recognition of the anniversary of Archbishop James Gleeson’s installation as Archbishop of the Diocese of Adelaide in 1971.

I trust that the holidays are a time of renewal and re-charge for families, and that you are able to spend quality time with those you care deeply for. I look forward to the many wondrous moments that Term 2 and the remainder of the year will provide.

YEAR 8 RETREAT > ‘Act Justly, Love Tenderly + Walk Humbly, With One Heart’

Gleeson College, for the second year, invited the Year 11 RE Youth Ministry Class to run workshops at

our Year 8 Retreat. In 2018, the focus concentrated on the theme from Micah

to ‘Act Justly, Love Tenderly andWalk Humbly’ and also living our lives

‘With One Heart’.

Year 8 students enjoyed the rotations of fun, interactive activities, which

encompassed learning around the four key themes and how they relate to our relationships. Students will continue to

look at the relationships they have, both with themselves and others,

in future RE Classes. The Year 11 students leading the workshops, many of them outside of their own comfort

zone, presented well the connection of their theme and activities to the spiritual

relationship we have with God. Well done and thank you to these students

for their planning and preparation leading up to the day, and also for their great work leading our young Year 8s through their Retreat sessions. You are to be commended on your enthusiastic

attitude, which created such a wonderful vibe on the day.

YEAR 9 HISTORY > ‘Great Exhibition’ Showcases Industrial Revolution Learning

Year 9 History Classes held a ‘Great Exhibition’ evening, showcasing the

results of their learning about the Industrial Revolution on Thursday

in Week 8.

Parents, siblings and extended family were treated to a traditional Devonshire Tea of scones, jam and cream to enjoy while they moved around the vast array of exhibits

produced by this talented and hard working group of young people.

Students shared the results of their research into a variety of topics,

ranging from the burgeoning British Hotel scene, the rise of Rugby, child-

workers, amazing inventors, the Suffragette Movement as well as a whole range of other topics. The

Industrial Revolution was truly was a time of incredible growth and change

in our world’s history. Particularly impressive was the confident and

articulate manner the students were able to speak about their topics -

without referring to their written work. They were definitely the stars of the

evening!

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES > Birthday Cake Decorating for KidsThe Year 10 Child Studies Class has

been busy researching how to create and decorate a birthday cake, based

on a theme of their choice.

Students have been practicing different icing techniques in class as

well as watching online demonstrations to learn different cake decorating

methods. Last week students got to show off their new skills as they created their birthday cakes. The student final

products were highly creative and finished to a high standard.

YEAR 12 FOOD + HOSPITALITY > Cultural Cafés Serve a Culinary Feast!

It is great to have two classes of Stage 2 Food and Hospitality in 2018!

Recently, students collaborated in small groups (made up of students they haven’t worked with before),

and together they planned and ran a restaurant quality, culturally-themed

luncheon.

Exploring traditional cooking methods, recipes and ingredients,

was sometimes challenging, but lead to lots of new learning. Both Cultural

Café function days were a big success, with family, friends and staff enjoying a delicious variety of culinary delights!

Each group felt the pressure of the kitchen, offering their guests two

options for each course! I could not be more proud of their success. The collaboration, organisation, initiative, and problem-solving skills they have all gained and practised are assets to

them for their futures.

Miss Lisa Feleppa,Year 12 Food + Hospitality Teacher

Student Comments > Year 12 Group Function 1 (Monday)“For Year 12 Food and Hospitality, our group created ‘The French Express’,

cooking authentic French meals. It was a great learning experience, widening our life skills within catering and working in a commercial kitchen. We worked as a

team, met the timeframe and produced restaurant quality food. Overall, it was a great experience!” - Josephine, Chelsea, Amelia, Erica & Sam

“As we decided to treat our guests to a Greek cuisine, we named our restaurant ‘Yaiyai’s Kitchen.’ We divided out work evenly with allocated time and dishes spread amongst the five of us, with two mains and desserts. Our mains were feta-stuffed lamb racks with spiced pumpkin and braised quail with cannellini

beans. The desserts were both very traditional Greek dishes, being Baklava and Galakatoboureko. All guests were pleased and satisfied with their meals.”

- The Greek Group“Today we conducted our Cultural Café called ‘La Mesa’ reflecting a Spanish theme. We presented a tapas plate, a main and a choice of desserts. A virgin sangria was also prepared. A complication on the day resulted in us having to remake a dessert. Despite this our guests thoroughly enjoyed the food and we

enjoyed preparing it!” - The Spanish GroupStudent Comments > Year 12 Group Function 2 (Tuesday)

“As a group we enjoyed exploring a new culture and the foods eaten in France.Being able to cook for guests was a fun experience that gave a look into the

hospitality business.” - Anastasia, Sophie, Daniel & Stefan“Our group decided to base our Cultural Café around Singapore foods. We

decided to create chicken and beef satay for entrée. The main included laksa and Singapore noodles. The day was a great success with great feedback from our

guests.” - Alicia, Madeline, Brayden, Cooper, Luke

YEAR 12 CHILD STUDIES > Bringing Computer Games to Life!

Year 12 Child Studies students recently completed their first group activity – an assessment focused on the impact of computer technologies and how over-engagement in the sedentary activities can impact a child’s health, wellbeing

and development.

Students had to adapt a popular computer game or app into a physical

activity, with a focus on supporting students’ fine and gross motor skills. Some groups also decided to focus

on promoting students cognitive development and social skills.

As a class, we then visited Salisbury North Primary School where groups

implemented their adapted games to engage a Year 2/3 Class with a range of physical activities. Adapted games included Mario Kart, Crash Bandicoot, Heads Up, Wii Sports Resort, Pokemon

Go and Temple Run. The planned activities engaged a group of 6-7 students for approximately seven

minutes before rotating. The primary school students had a fantastic time

and did not want the activities to end!

“It was a great experience to work with the children; there were many ups and downs with challenging kids, however

we overcame this by working as a team to solve the problems. We learnt

that teamwork was very important throughout the experience.”

- Erica, Alicia & Isabella

“It was rewarding to see the kids really enjoyed our activity. Our favourite part

of the day was to see their smiling faces. They truly appreciated all the

hard work we had put in.”- Sophie, Amelia & Brianna

We would like to thank Salisbury North Primary for their support in providing

our Child Studies Classes opportunities to work with their amazing young students. Our students thoroughly

enjoy these valuable and rewarding learning experiences.

YEAR 12 VISUAL ART STUDIES > Year 12 SACE Art Show 2018The Stage 2 Visual Arts students attended an excursion to see the

Year 12 SACE Art Show exhibition held at the Adelaide College of the Arts

on Tuesday 27 March.

This excursion gave the students an opportunity to view the outstanding

Stage 2 Visual Art work selected to exhibit from the previous year

graduates. It inspired, motivated and outlined what was expected of the students this year. We also had the privilege to see a practical piece by

Gleeson College 2017 Dux of College, Lucy Keatch, which was chosen for

this exhibition (pic top left + below). We ended our excursion with a tour of the School of Art, Architecture and Design

in City West, University of SA.

The students found this to be a worthwhile experience and it has

encouraged them to set goals and to aim for great success with their own personal journey of this Visual Arts

course.

YEAR 12 BUSINESS + ENTERPRISE > VISIT TO JARVIS, GEPPS CROSS

On Friday of Week 10, the Stage 2 Business and Enterprise Class went on

an excursion to visit the well-known South Australian car dealership, Jarvis

at Gepps Cross. The visit to Jarvis formed part of the class assessment

and provided valuable information and insight into the business operations

of Jarvis. Students will be required to complete a report outlining the key

business operations and strategies that make Jarvis such a successful business.

The Stage 2 Business and Enterprise class were met on their arrival to

Jarvis by General Manager, Mr Mark Lambert and Mary Foster, Jarvis Toyota Concierge. Upon entry into the show room we were taken upstairs to the

business boardroom where Mark and Mary went through a presentation about Jarvis including the history, management structures, values,

marketing strategies and strategic planning. Mark then took the students on a tour of the premises, providing

insights into the operations, layout and functions of the business.

Mark and Mary were able to pass on their invaluable industry experience

and knowledge of the business, Jarvis, which will ensure the students will be well prepared and resourced for their upcoming assignment. The

students definitely took a lot out of the excursion and were even excited about

potential careers in the car industry.

A big thank you to General Manager of Jarvis Gepps Cross, Mark Lambert, and to Jarvis Toyota Concierge, Mary

Foster, for taking time out of their busy schedules to guide our students and help them immensely with their

upcoming assessment task. Thank you also to Mrs Kate Pill, Key Learning

Area Coordinator of Humanities, for attending the excursion with the class.

GLEESON INAUGURAL SAPSASA ATHLETICS TEAM DO US PROUD!!

Gleeson College competed in our first-ever SAPSASA Athletics

Carnival in 2018! We took a squad of 18 Year 7 students to represent the College at this year’s carnival,

held at Bulkana Oval on Wednesday 21 March, and compete with ‘One

Heart’ they most certainly did!

All our young athletes were willing to put their hand up to fill extra

events, do their best and represent Gleeson with pride. There were

many great results throughout the carnival for our students, with four outstanding performers selected

to represent our district, Tea Tree Gully, at the State SAPSASA

Athletics Carnival to be held later this year. Congratulations to Mercedes Bates (7 PUT), Tyson

Hartmann (7 PUT), Scarlett Hatchard (7 HEW) and Adanna Okoye (7 BAR) on their TTG district selections and we wish you all the best for a great competition at the State Carnival.

A big thank you to Mr Puttnins, and GC Old Scholars’ Kimberley Elliott and Sarah Pope for their assistance

on the day.

CATHOLIC CO ED ATHLETICS 2018 > GC Team Shines at Santos StadiumMonday 26 March saw Gleeson

College take a small but strong team to the 2018 Catholic Co Ed Athletics

Carnival held at Athletics SA Stadium.

We were lucky to have such enthusiastic students representing the College on the day, especially in the

U14 age group! Our senior age group event listings were a little depleted with studies taking priority for many of our older athletes, however we

offered the opportunity to all students the chance to represent Gleeson, and managed to fill many of these events!

We were strongest in the U14 age group, coming second overall, and this did not include the many U14 students who competed above their age group. The day showed that as a College, we will always compete with dignity and

respect, and all students demonstrated this throughout the day.

A big congratulations to Year 8 athlete Kiera Searle (8 FMTER) who in her first year competing for Gleeson, broke the

Carnival record in the Long Jump – Well done Kiara!!

A massive thank you must go to GC Old Scholar Emily Boyle for her

assistance at the carnival, ensuring our athletes attended all their events, with the assistance of Senior School House Captains, Lauren Wright (12 MSSPI), Tyler Dunlop (12 HSFEL) and Jessica Mills (12 FSMIL). Thank you also to Mr Cibich and Mr Gloria for their

assistance on the day.
