Falcon News for April

Special School Visitors came to Fieldcrest ES!

During the month of March, we were delighted to have Director Steve Blake and Superinten-dent Daryl Halliday both visit Fieldcrest to tour the school and discuss our School Plan priorities in Teaching & Learning, Well-Being & Mental Health, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Parent & Community Engagement. Director Blake and Superintendent Halliday remarked on the hard work and collaboration that school staff put forth each day to make the school a safe, caring and welcoming school; deliver quality academic programs and a variety of co-curricular activi-ties to engage student in their learning and school life. They also commented on the strong home and school partnership and how parents and guardians support the school and students’ learning at home! As part of these visits, they got to meet 6 student leaders. These student leaders did a fine job at repre-senting the student body and shared their experiences as Fieldcrest students and innovative ideas on how to enhance our school.

Being on Time for School Matters!

Being on time for school is an important life skill. School starts at 9:15 a.m.

Here are some quick tips to get you started:

Lay out your outfit the night before so you don’t have to rush around in the morning trying to find clean socks.

Get your backpack organized and your lunch packed the night before, as well, so you do not have too many things to do in the morning before leaving for school.

Set an alarm each morning to

help encourage you to get out of bed on time

Spring Safety Drills

Student safety is a top priority at Fieldcrest! To en-sure that students and staff are prepared in the case of an emergency, the Ontario Ministry of Education requires schools to hold regular safety drill practices. Each year, schools must conduct six fire drills and two Lockdown and Hold and Secure drills. In April, we will be holding our second Lockdown

Drill on April 16 @ 10:30 p.m. and a Hold & Secure Drill on April 23 in the morning.

A Hold and Secure is a safety procedure that is used if there is a threat in the local school community in which school carries on as usual and students remain in their classrooms and do not go outside to play. A Lockdown is a safety procedure that is used if there is a major incident or threat of violence in the school. During a Lockdown drill, students, visitors and staff immediately go into their classrooms work spaces or other designated locations, staff ensure that entry doors are locked and all remain quiet until the princi-pal has been able to do a school check to ensure the drill has been properly carried out.Between April-June, we will also be conducting three more Fire Drills. If you have any questions about our upcoming safety drills, please contact the school office.

Cell Phones, Ipods, MP3 players, Head-sets, Collectibles, Toys, Money and Other

Valuables

We strongly discourage students from bringing these items to school as they can get broken, misplaced or stolen. They can also become distractions and the cause of disagreements among students. If students bring these items to school, they do so at their own risk.

Student Class Placement for September 2018

Our student placement process will focus on creating balanced classes. A great deal of time is spent by school staff to ensure that each student’s academic and social needs are taken into consideration in our class placement process. Parent input is one important factor considered in the placement process. If you have any infor-mation about your child’s learning needs or know peers he/she works well with, please inform Mrs. Walke in writing by April 30 by sending in your request in a sealed envelope to the school office. Please be advised that we cannot always accommodate requests for particular teachers, or straight grade classes. We will endeavor to do our very best to meet stu-dent needs.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day taking place on April 29

YMCAs across Canada are celebrating Healthy Kids Day on Sun. April 29. It’s a national day dedicated to improving the health and well-being of kids. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is happy to host this FREE event for everyone in the community, offering fun and healthy activities for the entire family to enjoy. Across Canada,

most children do not meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Rising rates of obesity and related chronic disease tell us that getting kids active should be a top priority for parents, schools, and all Canadians. With summer just around the corner, here are some practical tips on how to keep your kids active and healthy:

· Rather than heading out on a walk or jog solo, invite your kids to hop on their bicycles, skateboards and scooters and head out with you. You will come back energized and connected knowing that you’ve set a great example and spent quality time together. Everyone wins!

· Many communities have free or low-cost youth activities or programs at facilities such as pools, play-grounds, parks, sporting fields, community centres and the YMCA! Ask your child’s teacher, contact your local municipality, search online or contact your local YMCA for upcoming events.

· Depending on the distance and safety factor, consider letting your children walk to school, the library, their friend’s house or any other place you would normally drive them to. Some kids may be inspired by tracking their steps with a pedometer. Pedometers are relatively inexpensive and many libraries have them available on loan!

Join the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka on Healthy Kids Day and learn about healthy habits, connect

with other parents and get the whole family active together under one roof. For schedules of activities

and more information, please contact the YMCA in your community: www.ymcaofsimcoemuskoka.ca.

Register now for summer child care

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) supports your child care needs by offering full day child care programs in select schools across Simcoe County. Twenty schools offer child care programs for children from Junior Kindergarten age to 12 years of age. Registration in advance is required.

Please contact the child care operator directly to register. More information can be found on our website at www.scdsb.on.ca – click on ‘Schools’ then ‘Before & After School Care.’

Stress: Our kids get it too!

Kids have stress, just like us. Stress is a normal part of life, but our bodies are only made to handle it for short amounts of time. Continued stress can cause feelings of pressure, anxiety and tiredness. It can make it hard for kids to focus in school and can cause them to become sick, get lower grades or make unhealthy choices. It’s easy to mistake signs of stress for bad behaviour in your child. You can help them learn to manage stress by staying calm, showing love and talking openly about their feelings. Encourage them to try calming activities like deep breathing or doing something active. If the stress continues, be sure talk to your child’s family doctor or

health care provider. To speak with a public health nurse, contact Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 or visit the health unit website for more information at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org. Infor-mation provided by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit

What is “Walk ‘n’ Wheel”?

A fun event to encourage students, with the support of their parents and/or others, to use active trans-portation, non-motorized methods, to arrive at school; to “walk ‘n’ wheel”, to bike or scooter.

Held twice a year: first Wednesday in October for International Walk to School day and Second Wednesday in May which is during the Annual Mental Health Week.

Active transportation refers to any form of human pow-ered transportation—walking, cycling, wheelchair, in-line skating or skateboarding. There are many ways to engage in active transportation, whether it is walking to the bus stop, or walking or cycling to school/work.
