Principal’s message April 2016 and fill our lives with harmony! atÇvç _ÉäxÇ}t~, Principal I’m counting on everyone to shape up and multiply their learning during I Love Math Month! Esti- mating, problem solving, and number facts are just part of the fun as we explore math and games! Thank you to everyone who sponsored students for our Spell-A-Thon. All pledge money is to be in by April 22! We are also looking forward to the Choral Fest in May where our choirs will perform I Love Math Month April is the month where we celebrate math! There are math books to read and math activities and games across the curriculum to play. The first week of April we had estimating challenges like: how many doors are there on the first floor of our school? (the answer is 95). The next week featured problem solving challenges at each grade level. The third week we have Earth Day trivia facts to share. The final week we will have math riddles! Every class was asked to create a poster featuring their favourite math games which are going up on a grid and each grid position will reveal a mathematical reward! Come see them posted next to the office! Don’t forget to wear something with a number on it for Friday, April 29, 2016. Each week a math game will be sent home to be played. We also have a ‘Figure Me Out’ game where staff members have posted mathematical clues about them- selves and challenge students to guess who they are. All these activities add up to great fun! Kindergarten Registration for 2016-2017 We are now accepting kindergarten registrations for both our English and English-Ukrainian Bilingual programs for children born in 2011. The English-Ukrainian program is available to all children in the Lord Selkirk School Division. We ask that parents register as soon as possible because we provide readiness packages for children prior to their enter- ing kindergarten. This material will help your child be better prepared for school. For additional information, please contact the school at 482-4521. HAPPY THOUGHT SCHOOL 659 Quarry Rd. Mrs. Neil’s Two Sense

Random Acts of Kindness The wonderful students at Happy Thought School had the opportunity to join the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) group over this past winter. I was so proud and impressed at how willing, excited and involved the stu-dents were at coming up with and carrying through their ideas to be kind to one another. To keep the ball rolling, I brought forth an idea to Student Council – Cookies for Courage, where the students would brought in a baking item from home and gave up a lunch hour to bake cookies for the heroes of Selkirk. The students really wanted to do something kind for the RCMP and Firefighters in their community.

Sure enough; on April 13th we gathered all of our baking supplies, piled into the kitchen and baked chocolate chips cookies until the entire school smelled like Cookie Monster’s dream! The following day I delivered our fresh baked treats around the community which were much appreciated. The students were so engaged and excited to do something so kind for others. I did a little research; I was curious/why does it feel so good to be kind? Here is what I found; five benefits of kindness:

☺ Kindness makes us happier because we feel good doing something nice for someone else. This makes

us feel happy.

☺ Kindness helps heart health. When we do something nice we get something called, emotional warmth.

This produces a chemical called oxytocin in our brain and throughout the body. This makes us feel good and reduces our blood pressure.

☺ Kindness can make you feel younger. The effects of oxytocin help us to feel happier which reduces

stress and stress causes us to age quicker.

☺ Kindness makes for better relationships. We all know that we like people who show us kindness. This is

because kindness reduces the emotional distance between two people and we feel more ‘bonded’. It’s something that is so strong in us that it’s actually a part of our genetics. We are wired for kindness.

☺ Kindness is contagious. When we’re kind we inspire others to be kind and studies show that it actually

creates a ripple effect that spreads outwards to our friends’ friends’ friends – to 3-degrees of separation. Just as a pebble creates waves when it is dropped in a pond, so acts of kindness ripple outwards touch-ing others’ lives and inspiring kindness everywhere the wave goes.

I really enjoyed baking cookies with the students and I plan on doing more activities like this in the future. I also want to say a huge thank you to all of the parents who donated baking supplies and a huge, huge thank you to Mrs. Wager who volunteered to help us bake!

Remember to continue teaching your children about kindness/it really does make a big difference!

Marathon ClubMarathon ClubMarathon ClubMarathon Club We have started Marathon Club with the grades 2 - 4 students. All members are completing the Countdown 26 program. The idea behind the program is to run a full marathon, which is 26 miles, by running a mile each day for 26 days. Students who complete the program will have the opportunity to go to the Manitoba Marathon on Father’s Day (June 19, 2016) to run in the Super Run. Parents are welcome to attend the race with their child to run along side them or to cheer them on at the finish line. We will have a short presentation along with a video from one of the Manitoba Marathon representatives at our assembly. Many students are ex-cited for the opportunity to attend the marathon and will train hard at each practice to get there.

Lost and Found In an attempt to reduce the number of items in our school's Lost and Found, we are asking parents to please put their children's names in their clothing and possessions. We will return any labelled items to students.

Dear Petrusia,

What goes in the Easter Blessing Basket?

From, Mady Sagar

Dear Mady,

In the basket there is kubasa, paska(bread), eggs, butter, cheese, honey and, of course, chocolate!

From, Petrusia

I hope spring is finally here! The Eco-club has been busy at work. The windowed hallway is full of vari-

ous plants that are getting ready to be planted outside in the gardens. We should have a fantastic gar-

den outside this year! A big thank-you goes out to Ms. Grobb and all of the grade 3’s for working so

hard. On another note, April is math month. I have been sending home math games that can be played

to help develop various math skills. If you have misplaced them or would like to see the other games,

they can be found on the webpage under the link “Math Month.”

Mr. Chody’s Chatter

PLEASE send in all clean and dry shopping bags by April 28th.

There will also be a collection box to drop off your plastic bags for the Bag-Up Challenge at the Spring Fling dance on Friday, April 22nd.

Thank you to all of our parents and grandparents who volunteered their time so our students could participate in Ukrainian Easter traditions. The students could not have experienced pysanky making and the Easter basket blessing without all those helping hands.

April is an exciting month for our grade 6 EUBP students. The students will be attending the MPUE sponsored Ukrainian Language Camp at the University of Manitoba from April 26th-28th. They will bunk with other Manitoba EUBP students at St. Andrew’s College and spend their day learning about Ukraini-an culture and heritage while also participating in activities available at the University. Students will learn about modern Ukrainian music and folk costume; take part in an Ukrainian scavenger hunt; try Ukrainian art and dance; participate in wall climbing, lacrosse, swimming, Brazilian martial arts (Capoeira), an Aboriginal drumming workshop and teaching; and explore genetics, engineering, entomolo-gy and geology.

May is also an exciting month but for Manitoban grade 8 EUBP students. Our graduating students will venture to Vegreville, Alberta from May 5th-8th where they will see the World’s Largest Kubassa; tour a Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village; visit the West Edmonton Shopping Mall; tour St. Volodymyr’s Ca-thedral; and see the World’s Largest Pysanka. On the way home the students will stop in Saskatoon to dance the night away at the Vesna Festival Zabava.

A great big Dyakuju to everyone who bought silent auction tickets during parent teacher interviews. The grade 8 students raised $680 to put towards their Vegreville trip. The lucky winners were Bob Moroz, Ms. Bobrowich, Ms. Brown, Mr. Hildebrand, Mary Monkman, Melanie Mousseau, Charlene Hocaluk, Lawrence King, Adam McConnell, Jacquie Foreman, and Ms. Moroz.

And last but not least… Our grades 1 to 4 EUBP students will be participating in the Selkirk Choral Fes-tival on May 4th in the Selkirk High School theatre. Family and friends are encouraged to come support our students. Performance times are found on page 2.
