What publications have you enjoyed recently? My favourite recent manuscript was published in our journal, Supportive Care in Cancer. Drs. Hesketh, Carides and James Street reported on the time course of aprepitant in preventing cisplatin and AC (doxorubicin, cyclosphosphamide) induced emesis. Although the impression had been that NK1 receptor antagonists had their benefits primarily beyond 24 hours, the analysis showed substantial benefits that began quite soon after chemotherapy had been given. The pattern of emesis following ondansetron and dexamethasone also appeared to be the opposite of what was classically taught - it was unimodal for cisplatin and bimodal for AC. These results were surprising and challenged conventional wisdom, which is something that I always enjoy. Is there a component of supportive care you are particularly passionate about? Education is a passion for me. I love to listen to a speaker who is enthusiastic, teaches me something new and delivers it in a clear fashion with plenty of time for discussion. The annual MASCC/ISOO meeting is the premier event for supportive care in cancer education. Since about 70% of those who attend the annual meeting are not MASCC members, each meeting is a new opportunity to reach out to a large community of non-MASCC professionals who are delivering supportive care. What does this mean for how you could enhance MASCC’s role in supportive care education? Although the annual meeting is an effective platform for presenting research and contains interesting didactic sessions, it lacks much in the way of case-based sessions that show the application of evidence based supportive care to daily practice. I introduced a case based-audience participation session in Vancouver which attracted large crowds at a very early hour in the morning. There was a lot of positive feedback from the audience. I'd like to see that type of session again at future conferences because I want participants to go home thinking that they can introduce a Meet the Incoming President of MASCC, Dr. David Warr

April 2014

Congratulations to Dr. David Warr who will serve as the MASCC president from June 2014 – June 2016. David lives in Toronto, Canada, and works at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In our interview with David we discussed research interests, supportive care education and his personal reflections.

The pattern of emesis following ondansetron and dexamethasone also appeared to be the opposite of what was classically taught - it was unimodal for cisplatin and bimodal for AC. These results were surprising and challenged conventional wisdom, which is something that I always enjoy.

Is there a component of supportive care you are particularly passionate about?Education is a passion for me. I love to listen to a speaker who is enthusiastic, teaches me something new and delivers it in a clear fashion with plenty of time for discussion. The annual MASCC/ISOO meeting is the premier event for supportive care in cancer education. change in their practice or be assured that what they are doing is state of the art. We also need to think about how to expand our education in supportive care to our work places. That is a major challenge, but we have a lot of highly talented people within MASCC who are passionate about supportive care.

Can you tell us about a time you turned a challenge into an opportunity?Recently we were without power in Toronto for 4 days including Christmas day due to a major ice storm. Since the temperature was far below freezing, many of our neighbours moved out but we managed to keep warm safely with an innovative use of a natural gas stove top. On Christmas morning I was outside in pitch black at 630 a.m. barbecuing our massive 25 lb turkey. Although I had never barbecued a turkey the results were excellent and we had a wonderful meal with family. I was pleasantly surprised that we could easily "survive" several days without the internet or television and that everyone was content reading by candlelight!

Meet a new MASCC Member - Takashi Yurikusa I am chief of the dental department at the Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital located at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. My clinical practice includes outpatient and inpatient dental care and oral management.

I'm involved in supportive care to prevent or reduce oral complications related to cancer and its treatment. I'm very interested in improving my knowledge of supportive care. I was fortunate to have a dedicated mentor, Dr. Yojiro Ota, who was the previous chief of the dental department and a leader in the field of dentistry in Japan. His main work was in the oral care of cancer patients with a focus on patients' quality of life. Dr. Ota was one of the first members of MASCC/ISOO from Japan. His influence has led to an increased presence and contribution of others from Japan. Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly last year, and in his honour, I hope to continue the important work he has started, and contribute as a member of MASCC/ISOO.
