Advertising IndustryPhotography is a vital part of the advertising industry. It is used mainly for advertising on billboards, on the side of busses, bus stops etc. It is very powerful because it is usually the first thing someone will see when they see an advertisement and quite often the last thing they will remember. When photographers take images for an advertisement they have to be absolutely clear about the message the company want to convey, how they can make the photo sell the product. Unlike with TV adverts, they only have one image to sell their product so the photograph has to be the best it can be to sell the product.

Photo journalism

A photo journalist would most likely work for a news company or possibly freelance, their role would be to look at a news story and take photographs to be used on the news and in newspapers, for example they may have to take pictures of someone who is involved in a news story and would either return to the news company with the photos or try and sell it to a news company. They may also work for a magazine or a website and would take different kinds of photographs for news stories relating to those magazines. The main skills involve being able to tell a news story through photographers rather than just taking photographs, they have to give meaning to the photographs.

Fine Art PhotographyFine art photography is basically when the photographer takes photographs purely for the way they look, they would go somewhere where there are plenty of good views and set up shots and use the camera to create their vision. Unlike most other types of photography, fine art photography doesn’t have to sell a product, or tell a story, it just needs to look good. Photographs may go to different types of places for photographs, they may have an album in the mountains and one in a big city. Most of the time they will try to fit as much as they can into a photograph but still follow some of the rules of photography such as the rule of thirds to make it look as good as possible. They usually work freelance and have a website/blog with their photos on and will try and sell them to people for good amounts of money.
